During the meeting, Dr. Lal emphasized the importance of taking proactive measures to prevent the outbreak of these seasonal illnesses. He instructed that Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) at the district and PHC levels should visit affected areas promptly to implement anti-larval and anti-malaria measures.
He further directed that 'Dry Day' programs—meant to eliminate stagnant water and prevent mosquito breeding—should be observed in every village every Friday. He also stressed the need to identify last year's dengue-affected and high-risk villages, and conduct medical camps to raise awareness among the public about these diseases and their prevention.

Consider filling vacant posts at Othakadai PHC: HC to official
Madurai: Madras high court has directed the principal secretary of the health and family welfare department to consider and pass orders on a plea to fill up vacant posts of doctors, nurses, and a health inspector in the Othakadai primary health centre (PHC) in Madurai district. A division bench of justice A D Jagadish Chandira and justice R Poornima passed the order while disposing of a public interest litigation filed by N Abdul Rahman Jalal. The petitioner stated that people from nearly 10 villages visit the centre. As per information obtained under the RTI Act, a total of 383,669 outpatients, 11,934 inpatients, and 16,234 pregnant women were treated at the Othakadai PHC from 2021 to March 2025. While two doctor posts were sanctioned for the PHC, only one doctor is available. Similarly, the post of health inspector and two posts of nurses out of the sanctioned four nurses are vacant, the petitioner said. The present staff members are struggling to provide good care to patients visiting the hospital, he added. Besides, the ultrasound scan equipment remains unused. As a result, poor pregnant women are forced to travel to Government Rajaji Hospital, which is 12km away, for a scan. Hence, the petitioner moved court to fill up the vacant posts and repair the ultrasound equipment. Registrations must for newly-weds, pregnant women, infants, says Collector
District Collector Harendhira Prasad on Friday directed the health department officials to take adequate measures to prevent maternal and infant deaths in the district. He conducted a review meeting on maternal and infant mortality, immunisation programmes, malaria, dengue and other health-related issues with medical officers at the Collectorate on Friday (August 1, 2025). Mr. Prasad said that registrations of newly-wed couples, pregnant women, and infants must be recorded and instructed that special focus be given to high-risk pregnancies and low-birth-weight cases. He also asked the officials to ensure such cases receive adequate nutritional support and are shifted to hospitals in advance to avoid complications. He has also directed the District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) Jagadeeswara Rao to provide proper training to ASHA and ANM workers. During the meeting, the Collector also observed that hospitals which are conducting excessive abortions should be closely monitored and sought a detailed report on the causes of abortions. He also suggested setting up milk-feeding rooms for infants at bus stands, railway stations and shopping malls. Strict inspections must be conducted at scanning centres to prevent gender determination tests, while stringent surveillance and special inspection teams should be deployed for IVF centres, the Collector ordered. On malaria and dengue prevention, the Collector instructed officials to observe 'Dry Day' every Friday to eliminate mosquito breeding sites. He also stressed on the need for proper measures to prevent the spread of seasonal diseases and immunisation drives. During the meeting, the Collector released a poster marking the Breastfeeding Week celebrations.

Punjab govt joins hands with WHO to launch cancer care project in 3 districts
Chandigarh: Punjab govt has, in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO), launched a comprehensive cancer care pilot project in Bathinda, Mohali, and Gurdaspur districts. The project was jointly unveiled by Punjab health minister Dr Balbir Singh and WHO representative Dr Roderico Ofrin on Wednesday. The initiative is designed to enhance early detection, timely diagnosis, and prompt treatment of oral, breast, and cervical cancers — three of the most prevalent and preventable cancers in India — through a decentralised, systems-based approach. It aligns strategically with the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD) and aims to seamlessly integrate cancer care into all levels of Punjab's public health system — right from Ayushman Arogya Kendras at the grassroots to advanced tertiary care hospitals. This synergy is aimed at reversing the current trend, where over 60% of cancer cases in Punjab are diagnosed at advanced stages, leaving limited scope for effective intervention.
