Man (21) who punched his best mate's ex-girlfriend on Louth street warned he could go to jail

Troy Chiduza, College Manor, Hoey's Lane, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to a charge of assault causing harm at Crowe Street on September 30, 2022. The circuit court heard that the victim was left with a small scar and no longer socialises as much following the late night incident. She had accepted €2,000 compensation. Gda James Smith said that earlier in Toale's Bar where the injured woman's ex-boyfriend was present with his new partner, a drink was thrown over her and she 'responded in kind'. Outside in Crowe Street Mr Chiduza approached and punched her over the right side of the head. He ran away. The victim sustained a laceration to her right eye brow. She identified her attacker who was arrested on the following November 30. He told investigators that the woman took one swing at him and he swung back, hitting her once in the face 'as an act of self defence'. In a Victim Impact Statement the injured party said that she felt hot fluid running down her face. There was blood on her hands and the front of her dress. She didn't want to go to hospital. She went to the Louth the next day and got the injury glued. She was signed off work for three days, then three more, and lost a week's wages. She had a black eye. ADVERTISEMENT There was an €85 hospital bill, while a new iPhone cost €1,000. The victim continued that she was still traumatised. She was left with a scar and didn't socialise as much. Mr Chiduza had no previous convictions at the time but has since picked up 11, including one for obstruction. The others are under the Road Traffic Act, among them four for dangerous driving. Cross-examined by barrister Donough McDonough, instructed by solicitor Frank McDonnell, Gda Smith said there was no medical report. He arrived at the scene at 12.40am. An eight-second video showed part of the interaction. The defendant's parents were decent people shocked by what occurred. Mr McDonough said that the accused had pleaded guilty on a trial date. He was 18 at the time of the offence when he foolishly got involved in an argument. Self-defence was not being put forward. It appeared he was pushed and 'completely overreacted'. There was no excuse. He made a previous attempt to apologise. Mr Chiduza's father was in court. His parents, from Zimbabwe, moved to Ireland 25 years ago. He was a recruitment manager in his mother's healthcare business; and bought and sold cars and had registered his own company. His father was a mechanic. The defendant had a strong worth ethic. He was remorseful, and was assessed at low risk of reoffending. Adjourning the sentence hearing to October 14, Judge Dara Hayes said 'the greater likelihood is a custodial sentence'. He added there was substantial mitigation. Troy Chiduza was remanded on the same bail terms. Funded by the Courts Reporting Scheme

Face of Dublin man accused of strangling woman during assault in his home

He appeared before Judge Patricia Cronin at Cloverhill District Court on Tuesday for developments in his case, which was upgraded with a more serious charge. A Dublin man is to stand trial accused of strangling a woman during a non-fatal assault at his home. Lee Quinn, 29, of Keeper Road, Dublin 12 was initially charged with criminal damage to a door, bed and window and a minor category assault of a named woman, at his home address on June 3 last. He was remanded in custody the following day. News in 90 Seconds - August 6th He appeared before Judge Patricia Cronin at Cloverhill District Court on Tuesday for developments in his case, which was upgraded with a more serious charge. The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) authorised investigating officer, Garda Adam Deegan, to bring an additional charge under section 3A of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act for strangulation of the woman, who did not have to attend the proceedings today. The Sundrive Road-based garda told Judge Cronin that the DPP has directed 'trial on indictment' in the Circuit Court, and that the accused could be sent forward for sentencing on a signed plea should that arise. Garda Deegan said Mr Quinn was cautioned and 'made no reply' when the extra alleged offence was put to him today shortly before his court hearing. Defence solicitor Katie Dowling said her client, who did not address the court, was not applying for bail. She also granted an order for disclosure of evidence for Mr Quinn to consider, if he wished to enter a guilty plea. Judge Cronin remanded him in custody to appear again in one week, the longest period available, due to the new charge. She said that was to let the accused consider his position, but noted that he may not have had an opportunity to do so by that stage. Legal aid was granted to Mr Quinn, who will appear again via video link at his next hearing.

Man (23) accused of stabbing garda on Dublin street agrees to stay in custody

Abdullah Khan was arrested at the scene following an incident on Dublin's Capel Street. A 23-year-old man charged over the stabbing of a Garda on a Dublin street last week has agreed to stay in prison for another four weeks pending directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Abdullah Khan replied "sound" in Cloverhill District Court today when told that his next hearing was set for September 3 and that he was going to have a further consultation with his legal team. Mr Khan, with an address in north Dublin that cannot be reported by court order, was arrested at the scene following an incident at around 6pm on Capel Street in the city's north side on July 29. He appeared before Judge Patricia Cronin today for his second court appearance, having been held in custody with no bail application on July 31. Appearing via video link, seated and wearing a grey sweatshirt, he confirmed to his solicitor Katie Dowling that he consented to being further remanded in custody pending the DPP's decision on the case. The scene on Capel Street where the incident occurred. Photo: Sam Boal/Collins Photos News in 90 Seconds - August 6th He initially said, "That's all right," "Yeah, yeah," and "Thank you" when his case was called early and put to second calling. When it resumed, he spoke up to give his surname and confirmed to his solicitor, Katie Dowling, "I can hear you". It was explained to him that the matter was listed for mention, and he answered, "Yeah". Judge Cronin noted the DPP's directions were not yet available. Detective Sergeant Liam McLaughlin, of the Bridewell Station, informed the court that he was applying for a four-week remand if there was consent. During later exchanges with Ms Dowling, Mr Khan was informed that the directions were not available and he was entitled to apply for bail at any stage. The defence solicitor also explained that the State was asking for another four weeks for those directions, and he could consent to a two-week adjournment, but it was unlikely that they would be available. Or, she added that he could agree to a four-week adjournment. "On consent to the four weeks," he replied. Judge Cronin remanded him in continuing custody, noting that a video link appearance was acceptable on the next date. At the end of the hearing, his solicitor advised him that he had a video link consultation arranged for that night, adding, "we will be able to discuss the matter in more detail at that stage", to which Mr Khan replied, "Sound". Ms Dowling also advised him that if he wished to apply for bail, he could do so at any time once gardaí have been notified in advance. The injured garda, a young probationary member of the force who was on high-visibility patrol with a colleague, received hospital treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. The accused man is charged with assault causing harm to the officer and the production of a Tactix knife capable of causing serious injury. He has yet to indicate a plea to the charges, which are under section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act and section 11 of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act. At the first court appearance on Thursday, the defence secured reporting restrictions on the publication of Mr Khan's address, due to "concerns around safety", which was confirmed by Detective Sergeant McLaughlin. Medical attention in custody was also ordered, and legal aid was granted.
