Rural Milton couple discovers $760,178 lottery win on day of daughter's wedding shower
A husband and wife from a rural area of Milton snapped a picture of themselves outside Ontario's lottery prize centre back in 2009, hoping to return one day as winners.
On May 8, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. announced the couple has finally fulfilled that desire.
Shawn and Nancy Lyons of Moffat won $760,178 in the March 29 Lottario draw.
Their original photo was taken on New Year's Eve outside the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto.
'I printed that picture, and it's been hanging in our bedroom ever since. Now, here we are,' Shawn said in an OLG news release.
The pair, who run their own family-owned business, have been playing the lottery together for more than 30 years.
The parents of three and grandparents of three discovered the lottery win on the day of their daughter's wedding shower.
Shawn was outside with his son and was checking his tickets on the OLG app. At first, he thought they won $760, but when he showed his phone to his son, his son informed him it was actually more than $760,000.
'We were both so excited,' Shawn said 'We laughed and did a little happy dance before heading inside to share the incredible news with Nancy.'
Shawn, wearing a big smile, sat down beside his wife and then asked her to follow him outside. She was suspicious, but followed him out where he showed her the winning message.
'Winning comes with a burst of emotions,' the pair said together in the release. 'One minute you're laughing, and the next, you're overwhelmed. It's very exciting, as this win gives us the opportunity to help our children and our grandchildren. We also look forward to paying off our mortgage, completing some renovations, and investing for our retirement.'
The winning ticket was purchased at
Turtle Gas Station on Guelph Line
in Campbellville area of Milton.

'There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back' On Nov. 15, 2024, Mendes dropped his fifth studio album 'Shawn.' Billed as a more personal, intimate record than his previous output, the 12-track record follows through on that promise. Stripped-down and raw, 'Shawn' shows off Mendes at his most vulnerable over the record's 30-minute runtime. After a few spins, we were most struck by Mendes' quiet opener 'Who I Am,' soaring anthem 'Nobody Knows,' melancholy 'Isn't That Enough,' rousing epic 'Heavy' and stirring cover of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah.' Still, the undisputed highlight is Mendes' 'Heart of Gold,' an emotional ode to a departed friend. It's heavy and just may make you well up. We know we did. If you'd like to hear for yourself, you can find 'Shawn' in its entirety here. Not familiar with the artists Shawn Mendes is bringing on the road with him? No worries.
