UN warns of looming starvation in besieged Sudanese city of Al-Fasher

Roya News3 days ago
The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has issued a dire warning that families trapped in the besieged Sudanese city of Al-Fasher are at imminent risk of starvation, amid severe food shortages and a deteriorating humanitarian crisis, the BBC reported.
For over a year, WFP has been unable to deliver aid to Al-Fasher by road, leaving some 250,000 residents cut off from essential supplies. The city, located in Sudan's western Darfur region, has been encircled for nearly 16 months by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group attempting to wrest control of the area from the Sudanese army.
Local sources have already begun reporting deaths from hunger, as civilians resort to eating animal feed and food waste to stay alive. The WFP said the ongoing conflict has led to skyrocketing food prices and left families without viable means of survival.
'Everyone in Al-Fasher is facing a daily struggle to survive,' said Eric Perdison, WFP's regional director for Eastern and Southern Africa. 'People's coping mechanisms have been completely exhausted by over two years of war. Without immediate and sustained access, lives will be lost.'
The agency also highlighted the testimony of Sondos, an eight-year-old girl who fled Al-Fasher with five relatives. 'In Al-Fasher there was a lot of shelling and hunger. Only hunger and bombs,' she said. Her family had survived for weeks on millet alone.
Although WFP has food aid ready to deploy, previous convoys have been attacked, making safe delivery difficult. A shipment sent in early June was struck, with the RSF and the army trading blame for the assault. Since then, the UN has been pushing for a temporary ceasefire to allow humanitarian access to the city.
The blockade is part of a broader civil war that erupted in April 2023, now described by the UN as the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. Over 150,000 people have been killed nationwide, and approximately 12 million have been displaced from their homes. The conflict has also prompted mounting accusations of genocide in the Darfur region.
Despite calls for a week-long humanitarian truce in Al-Fasher, it remains unclear whether either side will honor a ceasefire or facilitate a new aid mission. Meanwhile, WFP officials stress the urgency of the moment.
'We are ready to move,' said a spokesperson. 'But without guarantees of safe passage, we risk more loss, of food, of aid workers, and above all, of life.'

Israeli Army Issues New Evacuation Orders for 9 Areas in Gaza's Al-Zaytoun Neighborhood - Jordan News

Gaza's Al-Zaytoun Neighborhood On Wednesday, the Israeli occupation army issued new evacuation warnings to the remaining Palestinian residents in nine areas of Al-Zaytoun neighborhood, east of Gaza City. The army called on them to move south toward the Al-Mawasi area in southern Gaza. اضافة اعلان Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee posted on X: 'A warning to anyone who has not yet evacuated the designated areas or has returned to blocks 613, 624, 625, 628, 629, 630, 631, 641, and 695 in Al-Zaytoun neighborhood.' Immediate Evacuation Demanded Amid Expanding Operations The army ordered immediate evacuation of the listed areas toward Al-Mawasi, west of Khan Younis, stating that its forces are continuing to 'deepen their operations' westward. The warning comes amid intensified Israeli air and ground bombardment on Gaza, and the ongoing forced displacement of tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians, as the UN warns of a worsening humanitarian catastrophe. Repeated Evacuation Orders and False "Safe Zones" On June 29, the Israeli army had previously ordered evacuations in parts of Al-Zaytoun and continues to issue similar warnings across various areas of the Gaza Strip. Although the army claims that the southern areas are 'safe zones', it continues to bomb all areas of the Strip, including those it tells civilians to flee to or gather in for aid distribution. Human Rights Watchdog: Gaza Is a Giant Prison Camp On July 8, the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor said Israel is treating Palestinians in Gaza as prisoners in a mass internment camp, forcing them to live in an area of just 55 square kilometers—less than 15% of the Gaza Strip—under intense military surveillance. The Monitor added that population density in that confined zone is unprecedented, stating: 'No inhabited area on Earth has ever recorded such density.' UN: 82% of Gaza Under Evacuation Orders In early July, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) reported that 82% of Gaza's territory is under Israeli evacuation orders, leaving Palestinians with no safe place to go, amid the ongoing destruction of shelters and infrastructure. Israeli Officials Signal Intent to Fully Occupy Gaza This comes alongside statements from Israeli officials indicating that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made a decision to move forward with a full occupation of Gaza, according to Israel's public broadcaster on Tuesday. Haaretz Reveals U.S.-Backed Plan to Occupy Parts of Gaza On July 29, Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that Netanyahu presented the security cabinet with a 'U.S.-approved' plan to occupy parts of the Gaza Strip. The plan follows controversial remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who said that Israel's 2005 withdrawal from Gaza under then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was 'a foolish decision.' Israel's Past and Present Occupation of Gaza Israel previously occupied Gaza for 38 years, from 1967 to 2005, and since October 7, 2023, has waged a campaign of genocide in the territory—through killing, starvation, destruction, and forced displacement—while ignoring international calls and orders from the International Court of Justice to halt its actions. Devastating Toll of the War The ongoing Israeli assault, backed by the U.S., has resulted in over 211,000 Palestinians killed or wounded, the majority being women and children, with over 9,000 missing, and hundreds of thousands displaced. A famine, also unfolding, has claimed many more lives.

Israel to partially reopen Gaza private goods trade

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM — Israel will partially reopen private sector trade with Gaza to reduce its reliance on humanitarian aid, the defence ministry civil affairs agency for the Palestinian territories said on Tuesday. "As part of formulating the mechanism, a limited number of local merchants were approved by the defence establishment, subject to several criteria and strict security screening," COGAT said. Israel has been fighting Palestinian group Hamas in Gaza for 22 months and imposed a total blockade on March 2, partially lifted in May to allow a US-backed private agency to open food distribution centres. Aid convoys and airdrops by Arab and European militaries resumed last month, as UN-mandated expert reports warned famine was unfolding in the war-torn territory. The COGAT statement said private sector deliveries would be paid for by monitored bank transfers and be subject to inspections by the Israeli military before entering Gaza, "to prevent the involvement of the Hamas terrorist organisation". Permitted goods under the new mechanism will include food staples, fruit, vegetables, baby formula and hygiene products, COGAT said. The agency said more than 300 aid trucks entered Gaza on Monday, a larger number than in previous days, and that hundreds more were "still queued up for UN pickup". In addition, 120 pallets of aid were airdropped in cooperation with Belgium, Canada, Egypt, Germany, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, it added. Hamas contested the figures, saying that only 95 aid trucks entered Gaza on Monday and that the majority of them were looted amid a "deliberate state of security chaos instigated by [Israel]". The United Nations estimates that between 500 and 600 truckloads of aid a day are needed to meet the needs of Gaza's more than two million inhabitants.

38 Jordanian aid trucks enter Gaza amid ongoing humanitarian crisis

AMMAN — A Jordanian aid convoy comprising 38 trucks entered the Gaza Strip on Monday, carrying essential food supplies amid a worsening humanitarian crisis, according to the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organisation (JHCO). Dispatched under Royal directives, the convoy crossed through the King Hussein Bridge in coordination with the UN World Food Programme (WFP) and the Jordan Armed Forces–Arab Army (JAF). The operation forms part of Jordan's ongoing regional and international efforts to provide sustained humanitarian support to the people of Gaza, according to a JHCO statement. As of Monday, a total of 294 out of 452 aid trucks dispatched by Jordan over the past two weeks have entered Gaza, with the remainder delayed due to Israeli-imposed restrictions at border crossings, JHCO Secretary-General Hussein Shibli said in remarks to Al Mamlaka TV. Shibli said that Israeli authorities often cite the end of official working hours to delay aid entry, saying that 'the occupation is highly skilled at creating obstacles'. He added that some humanitarian items, including medical supplies and equipment, have been rejected, and that prolonged inspection and crossing procedures have extended convoy travel times to as much as 38 hours. Despite these challenges, the JHCO continues to ramp up the frequency of its aid convoys to ensure a steady flow of relief to the besieged enclave. Shibli reaffirmed Jordan's unwavering commitment to supporting Gaza, describing the ongoing aid operations as a vital lifeline for its population. The latest convoy reflects the strong coordination between Jordanian national institutions and international partners, particularly the WFP, in responding to humanitarian crises. It also highlights the key logistical and operational role played by the JAF, which continues to conduct airdrops as a complementary method of aid delivery.
