Sovereignty wins 151st Kentucky Derby
Sovereignty beat favourite Journalism to win the 151st Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.
The colt, ridden by Junior Alvarado and trained by Bill Mott, finished the one and a quarter miles flat race in two minutes and 02.31 seconds to beat Journalism by one and a half lengths.
Citizen Bull set the early pace on the muddy track, before Sovereignty and Journalism emerged at the front heading into the final stretch.
But 7-1 third choice Sovereignty pulled away to take victory in front of 147,046 spectators.
"Fortunately, there was a lot of speed in the race," Mott said.
"It set up well for us because they had an honest pace. When you have a good pace, the field strings out a little bit more, and it offers you an opportunity to drop in once they line up a little bit.
"It gives the outside horses a chance, and that's what happened."
The win is the first for Alvarado and owner Godolphin LLC in the classic race, while it is the second for Mott, who won in 2019 with Country House after Maximum Security was bumped down for interference.
American gymnast Simone Biles, winner of seven Olympic gold medals, performed the traditional pre-race 'riders up' call signalling for the riders to mount their horses.
The role, given to celebrities and athletes, has been performed by TV personality Martha Stewart, NFL star Patrick Mahomes and singer Jack Harlow in recent years.
Journalism, ridden by Umberto Rispoli, went off as the 3-1 favourite after winning on his last four starts - although none of those victories were achieved on the mud.
"I know most people are disappointed," Rispoli said.
"On a fair track, I think I have the better horse."
Severe weather had delayed races on Friday and, while there were no such issues on Saturday, further rain led to muddy conditions for the derby.

The 26-year-old Reijnders moved for an initial fee of 55 million euros ($63 million) and is the second midfielder — after France playmaker Rayan Cherki — to join City in the special June 1-10 transfer window created to allow sides in the 32-team Club World Cup to reshape their squads. Advertisement City paid Lyon $41 million for Cherki and also signed Algeria left back Rayan Aït-Nouri from Wolverhampton for $42 million. After deciding not to push to sign Florian Wirtz — the Germany playmaker is close to joining Liverpool, according to reports in the British media — City has spent around the same amount on three players. Add this latest splurge to an outlay of more than $200 million in the winter transfer window and City has already spent at least $350 million on players in 2025 to provide manager Pep Guardiola with a squad capable of reclaiming the Premier League title from Liverpool. Breakthrough season Advertisement Reijnders has just been named as the best midfielder in Serie A after a breakthrough campaign in which he scored 15 goals and added five assists across all competitions for Milan, which endured a dismal season and failed to qualify for Europe. He joined Milan from AZ Alkmaar in 2023 for a fee of around 20 million euros (then $22.4 million) and recently signed a contract extension through to June 2030. That's the length of his contract at City, too. City is releasing De Bruyne to end his 10-year stint at the club and now has Reijnders and Cherki to link up with Rodri in an enticing midfield set-up. US men's soccer team hears boos after ugly loss to Switzerland
It was an American horror story of epic proportions for the U.S. Men's National Team on Tuesday night in their Gold Cup send-off match, as the club was booed off the field in Nashville, Tenn., during their 4-0 loss to Switzerland. The Americans didn't field their best lineup, but the ugly showing right before a major international tournament had U.S. soccer fans upset as the club walked off the field at halftime down by four goals and then again when the final whistle blew at the end of the match. The displeasure was audible on the TNT broadcast of the friendly match, and by the end, with large swaths of the 30,000-seat capacity Geodis Park visibly empty, it was apparent how upset U.S. soccer fans were. The loss was the fourth straight for the USMNT and put them on their longest losing streak since 2007. And to make matters worse, the four goals conceded in the first half were the most they've given up in more than 40 years. 'That's the disappointing thing, is we talked a lot about how we could compete, how we can believe in each other, how we can keep pushing. Take pride and we just fell short on all those aspects in the first half.' He added: 'It's disappointing, but at the same time, we know that we have a tournament ahead of us where these games are going to be coming quick and fast and our only option is to build on those.' The loss was another knock against the American squad that is facing plenty of challenges going into the Gold Cup tournament, and is a year away from the start of the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in North America. The USMNT has gone 5-5 since new head coach Mauricio Pochettino took over in September of last year, and he'll face plenty of questions if the United States doesn't come together during the Gold Cup.
