Greater Bengaluru Authority Replaces BBMP As City's Primary Civic Body
Last Updated:
Greater Bengaluru Authority has now officially replaced Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike as the city's civic body after the Governor gave assent to the legislation.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) was officially replaced by the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) as the city's primary civic body, as the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act 2024 came into effect.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah made the announcement on Thursday about the implementation of the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, which replaces the BBMP with the GBA. The Governor's assent to the act effected its implementation.
'From today, the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) is coming into effect. The BBMP will no longer exist. The bill was passed in both houses and signed by the Governor. Henceforth, it will be known as Greater Bengaluru. I will be the Chairman of it," Siddaramaiah said yesterday.
What Is Greater Bengaluru Governance Act?
The new Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024, allows the city to be governed by at least three separate municipal corporations instead of just one, like the BBMP, the government said in a statement.
Each municipal corporation will be headed by an elected mayor who will be in charge of a specific zone. All such corporations will operate under a central body called the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA). This centralised body will be responsible for overseeing city-wide planning and coordinating infrastructure efforts across Bengaluru.
The GBA was passed by the Karnataka Legislature in February last year. It was brought in to address calls pending for long for better governance in the city which has been facing increasingly rapid population growth, infrastructure problems and environmental concerns.
The government had initially planned to expand the city's limits to over 1,000 square kilometres – unlike now under BBMP which covers 709 square kilometres – by including nearby villages; however, according to reports, the plan has been put on hold, maintaining the current BBMP boundaries.
The villages around the city limits will continue to be run by gram panchayats. Officials have said that any future expansion of Bengaluru's limits will be done in a planned manner, only after the rules and regulations of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) are fully established.
The GBA adopts several provisions from the Bengaluru Metropolitan Land Transport Authority to strengthen transport planning and coordination. It brings together key agencies like BMTC, BMRCL, and BDA, and has the authority to issue binding directives to align municipal and transport functions.

CM Siddaramaiah asserts Karnataka's right to raise Almatti dam height despite Maharashtra's objections
BELAGAVI: In a major development, Chief Minister Siddaramaiahhas taken an aggressive stand with regard to his government's decision to increase the height of Almatti dam from the present 519.60M to 524.256 M. On June 9, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had urged Siddaramaiah in his letter to reconsider the state government's decision to increase the height of Almatti dam, claiming that the rise in dam height would result in floods in areas of Sangli and Kolhapur districts. In his letter to his Maharashtra counterpart written on June 11, Siddaramaiah expressed his government's commitment to increase the dam height. He clarified his government's stand not only on the submergence issues but also on its right to raise Almatti dam height to FRL (Full Reservoir Level) 524.256 M even without waiting for the publication of the award by the Union government under Section 6(1) of the Inter State Water Dispute Act of 1956.

Governor attended RCB event on official invite: CM Siddaramaiah
Chikkaballapur, June 11 (UNI) Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday reiterated that the Governor of Karnataka, Thaawarchand Gehlot, had been officially invited to the felicitation ceremony of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) players held at the Vidhana Soudha on June 4, jointly by him and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). Addressing a press conference here, Siddaramaiah said, "KSCA and I had invited the Governor to the felicitation ceremony of RCB players held at Vidhana Soudha. He did not attend it on his own." The clarification comes amid political criticism and confusion surrounding the Governor's presence at the event. He further stated that the invitation was extended personally and formally, countering claims that Raj Bhavan acted independently. The Governor's office has also confirmed that the invitation was issued by the Chief Minister's Office. The CM's remarks follow controversy surrounding the post-ceremony tragedy near Chinnaswamy Stadium, where a stampede led to the deaths of 11 individuals and left many others injured. The incident occurred as thousands of fans gathered to greet the RCB players during a victory celebration organised by KSCA and event partners. Siddaramaiah maintained that the state government was not involved in the planning or organisation of the celebrations and had only permitted the felicitation at Vidhana Soudha. He added that the tragic incident occurred hours later and that he was informed only around 5:45 pm. In response to the tragedy, the government has announced Rs 25 lakh ex gratia for the families of the deceased and full medical support for the injured. A CID probe and magisterial inquiry have been ordered. As part of immediate action, Bengaluru's Police Commissioner and four other officers were suspended. FIRs have also been registered against officials of KSCA, RCB, and DNA Networks, who managed the event logistics. The issue has triggered a political storm, with opposition leaders blaming the Congress government for negligence. BJP leader B Sriramulu called for the resignation of the CM, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, and the Home Minister, accusing them of ignoring prior police warnings about security risks. The incident has also drawn widespread condemnation from the cricketing fraternity, with former cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh, and Aakash Chopra expressing grief and calling for accountability. Yathindra: Siddaramaiah will complete five-year term as CM
Mysuru: MLC Yathindra Siddaramaiah, son of CM Siddaramaiah, on Wednesday stated that Congress high command has not given any deadline to his father. He stated that Siddaramaiah will complete a full five-year term. "There is no danger for his CM post. He will complete the term," Yathindra told reporters. He also stated that the Delhi meeting was convened to discuss the deadlock over caste census. "During the discussion, the Bengaluru stampede issue was also discussed," he said. He accused BJP and JD(S) of following double standards while demanding the resignation of CM Siddaramaiah for the stampede. Similar stampedes claimed lives during Kumbh Mela and at Tirupati, but the BJP is silent on both the incidents. However, the Karnataka govt has ordered a judicial investigation into the Bengaluru stampede. "Truth will come after the investigation," he said. "How many leaders have resigned for stampede deaths in BJP and NDA-ruled states? Has the BJP taken any action against those who are responsible?" he asked.
