ITV Coronation Street star died broke and on benefits despite 22-year soap stint
A Coronation Street actor died penniless and on benefits despite starring on the ITV show for two decades, according to reports. Peter Adamson was known to fans of the long-running ITV soap as Len Fairclough.
He first appeared on Coronation Street in 1961 and would go on to remain there until 1983, a 22-year stint, racking up 1,730 episodes. Peter spent his final years as a 'virtual recluse' after his acting career ended in the 80s.
When he passed away at the age of 72 at his home in Bury, he was close to the breadline. Coronation Street was Peter's last acting job as he was then accused of indecently assaulting two eight-year-old girls at Haslingden Baths, where he was working as a part-time swimming instructor.
He was acquitted of the charges at Burnley Crown Court but then went on to sell a number of 'inside stories' to the press in a bid to clear his £120k legal bill, reports the Mirror.
He would claim that during one, while he was drunk, he was persuaded to change his story. He was alleged to have said to one journalist: "I am totally guilty of everything the police said... But what I hope you will print – there was no sexual intent."
After he was reinterviewed by police over the 'confession', which Adamson denied, no further action was taken when the reporter in question said he had "mislaid" the tapes. However, Adamson was instantly axed by Corrie bosses, losing his £10,000 a year salary, around £190,000 in today's money.
Len Fairclough was killed in a motorway accident after apparently visiting a mistress to ensure no viewer sympathy.
Adamson went to Canada to start a new life but came back to the UK shortly after and was declared bankrupt in 1991. With no cash coming in, he lived in a rented flat and relied on benefits as he was unable to find work. He did have some roles on radio and in a West End production of Dial M for Murder, as well as a stint in Vanburgh's The Relapse in 1988.
When he died penniless, it wasn't the first time he had been facing financial issues, as was revealed in legal documents during his trial.
The actor, who was reported to be a "hellraiser" and a heavy drinker throughout his working life, owed thousands to the Inland Revenue by the late 1960s.
He'd also been suspended from Coronation Street in 1969 due to his drinking. Adamson's wife Jean died soon after his court appearance.
The actor left behind two sons when he passed away in 2002.

Molly-Mae Hague's sister finally ends Tommy Fury feud after doubts over romance
Molly-Mae Hague's sister Zoe has been spending time with Tommy Fury and her niece Bambi - suggesting the family are all getting along nicely after awkward past exchanges Molly-Mae Hague's sister has had a change of heart over Tommy Fury. Zoe is now supporting the Love Island star's reignited romance with boxer Tommy - after previously sharing her fears the relationship was unsalvageable. Reality show fans will recall watching Molly-Mae and Tommy, both 26, fall for each other on ITV back in 2019. They then enjoyed one of the strongest romances in Love Island history - moving in together soon after leaving the villa, welcoming a baby daughter named Bambi in January 2023, and getting engaged six months later. But fans were shocked in August last year - when Molly-Mae revealed the unthinkable - that her romance with Tommy had come to a crashing end after months of speculation about the state of their relationship. By the beginning of this year, however, the couple appeared close together. It comes after Andy Carroll 'splits from Lou Teasdale due to her demands' weeks after public row. READ MORE: Gemma Collins' plans for 'mystical' wedding on hold again as she makes blunt admission And in May they confirmed they were giving their romance another try. Molly-Mae's sister Zoe, however, had expressed her fears that the relationship was doomed - with her damning opinion being aired in the reality couple's Amazon reality show, Behind It All, in May. Now, three months on, it seems Zoe, Molly-Mae, and Tommy are all getting along swimmingly. Taking to social media over the weekend, the trio shared footage and photos of themselves working out in a gym together - alongside toddler Bambi. Zoe and Bambi could be seen performing burpee exercises together, while further content showed the toddler watching her dad, Tommy, running on a treadmill in the same gym. Molly-Mae shared content alongside an amusing caption, writing: "I think she may feel the same about the gym as I do," drawing attention to Bambi's unimpressed expression while watching her dad exercise. The happy family scenes come just a few short months after the Love Island stars confirmed they were back together. A source previously said of the reunion: 'It sounds extreme, but Molly feels much more reassured when Tommy checks in. It all helps with trust, honesty and transparency between the two of them. "Tommy has been very dedicated so far — if he's on a train, he will FaceTime the moment he gets off. It's the same with any flights that he takes or hotels he's staying in. 'Tommy dutifully phones Molly the minute that he arrives anywhere. And then she likes him to also show her where he is. This has been going on for months now, and Tommy's friends are impressed that he has agreed to it whole-heartedly.' The strict rules were laid down after Tommy had opened up about his relationship with alcohol. He said last year: 'The reason why me and Molly broke up was because I got addicted to alcohol and I couldn't be the partner that I wanted to be any more. 'It kills me to say it, but it's true, I couldn't. I loved a pint of beer, loved to drink, and it is what it is.' Following the confessions, Zoe had shared her concerns over her sister getting back together with the boxer. She said in scenes that aired in the Amazon reality show: "I would always, always, always, 100% be there for her,' Zoe insists in a tense on-camera exchange. 'But, yeah, I do worry for her, and my relationship with her if they would get back together. Definitely. I just want us to get on. I actually don't hate you in the slightest. Like, I feel like you actually hate me." Molly-Mae then hit back: 'No, I don't hate you. But I feel that anger from you towards me, from like, years and years of us sometimes having arguments.' But Zoe refused to back down, warning: 'I think she potentially needs to look into the future and think what's best for her and Bambi. She's got a long, rocky road ahead, unfortunately.' Molly-Mae has even had to hit back at her own fans - who have accused Tommy of not doing enough for his daughter and suggesting Zoe has been more present for her. In an emotional video post, Molly-Mae told her followers: "I've seen so many comments saying 'Zoe is more the dad' I only vlog when I am not with Tommy, I am with Tommy literally 80 per cent of the week and he is with Bambi the majority of the week. "But I vlog when we are here and he is at his because it's just something that I am not ready to like open up with yet and like flinging the camera around like when we're a family. I just think like we're not there yet and still figuring out life and living situations. I'm not ready to vlog like we used to."

Downton Abbey fans will be able to secure a souvenir from the period drama as costumes worn by the characters, furniture used to adorn the stately home, and even the family car used in the popular ITV series and subsequent films are to be sold at auction for charity. A dress worn by the late Dame Maggie Smith, who starred as Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, is one of the star lots. The wedding dress Michelle Dockery wore as Lady Mary Crawley when she married Matthew Crawley, played by Dan Stevens, is also up for sale. The pale apricot chiffon long-sleeved dress comes with a pair of ivory satin Mary Jane shoes, a paste tiara and silk tulle veil and a bouquet of prop lilies, and is estimated at between £3,000-£5,000 in the online sale by the auction house Bonhams. The Granthams' family car, a 1925 Sunbeam Saloon, which Bonhams said was one of about 45 of the vehicles to survive, has an estimated sale price of £25,000 to £35,000. It was first seen in season two and used throughout seasons three, four and five, as well as all three films. Even the distinctive bell wall from the servants' hall and a large pitched pine refectory table in 18th-century style acquired for season five for the servants' hall are among the lots. There are lady's maid and footmen uniforms, and the butler Mr Carson's distinctive silver pocket watch. A script from season one, episode one, signed by cast members including Smith, Hugh Bonneville and Samantha Bond is listed for an estimated £600 to £800. Proceeds from the auction will go to Together for Short Lives, a charity supporting children with life-limiting conditions and their families. Gareth Neame, the show's executive producer, said: 'The world of Downton Abbey is beloved around the globe for its rich, timeless storytelling. These iconic set items hold a special place in that history, and we are proud to see them help support the vital work of Together for Short Lives.' The auction is available for bidding online from Monday at
