War in Gaza leaves deep scars on Palestinian sport

AMMAN — The recent killing of the veteran footballer Suleiman Obeid, locally known as the 'Palestinian Pele', has cast a fresh shadow over Gaza's already devastated sporting community.
Obeid was killed in an Israeli attack while waiting for humanitarian aid in the southern Gaza Strip according to The Palestinian Football Association (PFA).
Once a fixture of the national team and a symbol of Palestinian football, Obeid's death adds to a growing list of athletes lost to the war. The toll on Palestinian athletes and officials has been devastating.
Since the start of the war in October 2023, 662 people from the sport and scouting sector have been killed, including 321 members of the football community, according to the PFA. By July 2025, the association reported that nearly 800 athletes and sports officials had been killed across Gaza and the West Bank. Most of them died not in combat, but in their homes, on their way to training, or while sheltering with their families.
The human loss comes against the backdrop of unprecedented destruction. By February 2025, the Palestinian Olympic Committee (POC) estimated that at least 270 sports facilities had been damaged or destroyed, with material losses running into the hundreds of millions of dollars.
The Yarmouk Stadium in Gaza City, a historic football ground, has been reduced to rubble, while swimming pools, sports halls, and youth centres lie in ruins.
Travel restrictions and the long-standing blockade have compounded the crisis. Even before the war, Palestinian athletes faced significant challenges in travelling for competitions. According to the PFA, athletes face severe restrictions on movement, with travel permits frequently denied by Israeli authorities. This has forced teams to forfeit matches and miss international tournaments. Entire squads have been grounded just days before scheduled departures, ending hopes of competing and stalling the careers of young players whose progression depends on international exposure.
Rebuilding Gaza's sports sector will take years. The POC estimates it could require five to ten years to restore basic facilities, if the blockade is lifted and sustained international support is secured. Until then, Gaza mourns not only the deaths of athletes and the destruction of stadiums, but also the loss of sport as a unifying force and a source of hope.
Obeid's death has become a symbol of that loss. Celebrated for his skill and leadership on the pitch, he is now remembered as one of hundreds of athletes whose careers and lives were cut short. His story, like that of so many others, is a plain reminder that in Gaza today, even the most universal of pastimes has become another casualty of war.
The war's impact on Palestinian sport is likely to be felt for generations. The physical destruction will take years to repair, and the loss of so many athletes, coaches, and administrators means an irreplaceable depletion of experience and talent. Yet for many in Gaza, continuing to play, train, and compete is an act of resilience in itself.

Dramatic late goals and penalty triumph hand PSG first UEFA Super Cup

AMMAN — Paris Saint-Germain became the first French side to lift the UEFA Super Cup after a dramatic 4-3 penalty shoot-out win over Tottenham Hotspur in Italy on Wednesday, following a 2-2 draw in normal time at the Bluenergy Stadium. Tottenham were the sharper side for much of the contest, dominating the first hour and striking twice through Micky van de Ven in the 39th minute and Cristian Romero's header from a set piece early in the second half. Richarlison also came close on two occasions before Van de Ven pounced on a rebound to break the deadlock. Romero's goal, assisted by Pedro Porro, doubled the advantage shortly after the restart. PSG struggled to create clear chances for long spells but a quadruple substitution from coach Luis Enrique changed the momentum. Substitute Lee Kang-in pulled one back on 85 minutes with a precise low shot from outside the area, before fellow substitute Goncalo Ramos equalised in stoppage time, turning in Ousmane Dembele's cross. With the match skipping extra time, the shoot-out saw PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier make the difference, securing a 4-3 victory. Dembele was named player of the match for his decisive impact. Enrique acknowledged that Tottenham had been the stronger side for much of the game but expressed delight at his team's resilience and the joy the win would bring to supporters. New Spurs boss Thomas Frank noted that his side had the match under control until the late PSG goals, but took encouragement from the overall performance.

Cabinet approves tax exemptions for JFA, incentives for green hydrogen projects

AMMAN – The Cabinet has decided to exempt the Jordan Football Association (JFA) from sales tax on its revenues generated from sponsorship and marketing contracts, television broadcasting rights, and ticket sales. The exemptions were approved during a session on Wednesday, chaired by Prime Minister Jafar Hassan, according to a Prime Ministry statement. The decision follows prime minister's visit to the association in July and comes in recognition of the national team's recent historic qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the statement said. During his visit to JFA, Hassan announced that the government would double the association's budget starting next year to help it continue its achievements. He also said at the time that the government will support the expansion of youth football training centres across the Kingdom's governorates and make use of the infrastructure of youth centres to develop training programmes for football and other sports. The Cabinet also approved classifying donations to the JFA as tax-deductible and exempted individuals and entities contracted by the association from paying work permit fees, the statement said. The Cabinet also endorsed a set of investment incentives for green hydrogen projects located outside the Aqaba Special Economic Zone, as recommended by the Ministry of Investment. The new incentives include reducing income tax to 5 per cent, plus a 1 per cent national contribution, and full exemption from customs duties, import fees, and other taxes on all fixed assets and equipment, whether sourced locally or imported by project owners or contractors. The incentives also include exempting projects, companies, and contractors, main and sub, from general sales tax and any other taxes, according to the statement. The statement said that the incentives are expected to attract high-value investments, create both direct and indirect jobs, and advance Jordan's position as a regional hub for clean energy and green technologies, such as green ammonia production. The Cabinet also approved the financing agreement and memorandum of understanding related to the financial assistance provided to Jordan by the European Union, amounting to €500 million. This is part of a €3 billion financial aid package announced by the EU for Jordan earlier this year for the period 2025–2027, within the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement between Jordan and the EU, which was signed by His Majesty King Abdullah at the end of January. The aid package includes €640 million in grants, €1.4 billion in investments, and around €1 billion allocated for macroeconomic support, in recognition of the Kingdom's role and strategic partnership with the EU, the statement said. The Cabinet also approved the 2025 bylaw for the Scientific Research and Innovation Support Fund. The bylaw, the statement said, aims to provide a suitable environment for scientific research through research centres and to regulate the financial, administrative, and technical aspects related to the fund.
