Kellie Gerardi inspires girls to go to space through friendship bracelets and sparkle
Kellie Gerardi is one of USA TODAY's Women of the Year, a recognition of women who have made a significant impact in their communities and across the country. Meet this year's honorees at womenoftheyear.usatoday.com.
JUPITER, FLA. − When Kellie Gerardi glanced down at earth from space for the first time a year ago, her jaw dropped.
It was a moment she couldn't have prepared for. One thought ran through her mind – that she was no longer on the same planet as her daughter.
'To look down at our home planet with my own eyes was extraordinary and emotional,' says 36-year-old Gerardi, the 90th woman to visit space. 'There were not a lot of people I could look to from a mother's perspective to ask, 'What does that feel like?' '
She whispered, "Hi, Delta," at the window and pictured her 7-year-old daughter Delta Victoria – named after the Delta-V symbol used in spaceflight dynamics – waving back.
A clip of Gerardi looking out of the spacecraft's window went viral after she posted it on Instagram. More than one million people follow her account today. She wants to show them all that women can love science and still be sparkly, that STEM and femininity can exist together, and to inspire more girls to learn about space.
'If you were to ask me to close my eyes and picture an astronaut, I'm not picturing someone who looks like me, and I've been (to space),' Gerardi said. 'But if you ask my daughter to draw an astronaut, she's drawing a girl. It's shown me how important representation is.'
Gerardi is preparing to launch into space for the second time in 2026.
Gerardi has dreamt of space her entire life. The Jupiter, Florida, native grew up not far from the Space Coast, which made her obsessed with the final frontier.
Today, she considers herself a citizen scientist. She studied bioastronautics and wants to understand how space's environment affects the human body. She is also excited about the potential for the commercial spaceflight industry, which could open space to creatives and scientists alike.
Her first rocket flight into space was in November 2023 on a research mission with space tourism company Virgin Galactic. Her upcoming mission is also led by Virgin Galactic and will expand on the past flight's research, which looked at how liquid behaves in space.
On her first trip, she didn't get nauseous and the only pain she felt was cheek soreness because she smiled so much.
Gerardi was the first female payload specialist to go to space with Virgin Galactic. Two bioastronautics researchers will join her on her next trip, Shawna Pandya from Canada and Norah Patten from Ireland.
'It wasn't designed to be an all-female team,' Gerardi said. 'It just so happened that the women in this crew are so exceptional, credible and amazing.'
Gerardi credits her mom, Marion Gerardi, with supporting her dream. Last year, Marion threw her a 'career shower' – a party with the same vibe as a baby shower, but celebrating work – when she learned of her second flight.
'I had a wonderful bridal shower and baby shower, but to be able to celebrate the other important moments in life and to really bring our multitudes into the fold is really powerful,' Gerardi said.
Gerardi is committed to being her true self.
She wore a full face of makeup and stacked her wrist with friendship bracelets – like the ones traded at Taylor Swift concerts – on her first spaceflight. She likened it to her wedding day. It was the highest point in her career up until then, so she wanted to look and feel her best.
'I was unwilling to tone down my femininity or my personality to fit into someone else's perception of what a professional looks like,' Gerardi said. "I wanted to force that picture to expand to include me. That is the aperture I want to keep expanding for the next generation.'

She later broke apart the bracelets and made more with at least one bead that went to space. She gave them to other Swifties at the Taylor Swift concert in Miami in October.
Gerardi encourages others to shoot for the stars. She often gets messages from women inspired by her to go back to school or apply for their dream jobs. She also shares her journey with in vitro fertilization online to help others suffering from infertility not to feel as alone.
Still, she gets plenty of criticism. Hate comments don't affect her, though, because she is confident in her identity.
'I don't have a spare thought for any of the folks who have underestimated me or had negative things to say,' Gerardi said. 'When you're doing something that makes your soul click, you just don't have space for dealing with any of the noise.'
When Gerardi isn't training for space, she designs space-themed dresses, makes DIY home decor, writes children's books – she has penned the 'Luna Muna' series – and listens to her favorite Taylor Swift song, 'Florida!!!'
Gerardi has also curated space decor throughout her house. A mosaic of planets and stars covers the dining room wall, a moon-shaped lamp lights up the living room beneath a pop-art poster of her in a spacesuit, and rocket figurines sprinkle the countertops.
She wants to show to her daughter that she doesn't have to choose just one interest.
'Everyone asks if my daughter wants to be an astronaut or if I think she'll follow in my footsteps,' Gerardi said. 'The honest answer is that I have no expectations or desires about her future, except that she feels free to pursue the furthest boundaries of her potential in the same way that I have. . . This mindset that tells you that not even the sky is the limit.'

After Taylor Swift Called Scooter Braun Her 'Nemesis,' He Has Said That He Genuinely Thought She'd Want To Work With Him When He Bought Her Masters
It's no secret that Taylor Swift has long considered Scooter Braun her 'nemesis,' with Scooter being Kanye West's manager during the rapper's infamous 2016 beef with the singer. Kevin Mazur /for The Recording Academy, Jemal Countess / Getty Images fo Anti-Defamation League If you need reminding, the feud resulted in Taylor being branded a 'snake' across social media and led to her retreating from the public eye for almost an entire year. At the peak of her downfall, Justin Bieber even posted a screenshot from a FaceTime call with laughing Scooter and Kanye to his Instagram page alongside the goading caption: 'Taylor swift what up." So, it's pretty unsurprising that when Taylor's former manager Scott Borchetta sold his record label, Big Machine Records, to Scooter's company, Ithaca Holdings, for $300 million back in 2019, Taylor wasn't exactly happy about it. For reference, this deal meant that Scooter would profit from the sales and use of all of the music that Taylor released through Big Machine during her 10-year contract with them, which included her first six albums. Taylor addressed the situation in a lengthy Tumblr post at the time, where she said that she didn't sign a new contract with Big Machine because she knew that Scott was planning to sell. She also revealed that she rejected a new contract even though it offered her the opportunity to 'earn' the rights to one old album for every new one she released. Taylor then said that Scott selling to Scooter was her 'worst case scenario' as she called out the 'incessant, manipulative bullying' she'd received at Scooter's hands over the years. Taylor added that Scooter had 'stripped' her of her life's work that she 'wasn't given the opportunity to buy.' 'When I left my masters in Scott's hands, I made peace with the fact that eventually he would sell them. Never in my worst nightmares did I imagine the buyer would be Scooter,' she wrote in the post. 'Any time Scott Borchetta has heard the words 'Scooter Braun' escape my lips, it was when I was either crying or trying not to.' Related: Here's Why People Are Raising Their Eyebrows Over Chris Pratt's Post About The Fatal Shooting Of His 'Parks And Recreation' Costar Jonathan Joss Scooter has previously admitted that when he acquired Big Machine he assumed that he would 'be in business' with all of the artists that it covered, saying during an appearance on NPR's The Limits podcast: 'The regret I have there is that I made the assumption that everyone, once the deal was done, was going to have a conversation with me, see my intent, see my character and say, 'Great, let's be in business together.' I made that assumption with people that I didn't know." "I didn't appreciate how that all went down. I thought it was unfair," he added at the time. "But I also understand, from the other side, they probably felt it was unfair, too." And in a new interview for Steven Bartlett's Diary of a CEO podcast, Scooter opened up some more about Taylor specifically as he admitted that he thought she would be enthusiastic about working with him despite his connections to Kanye and Justin. Related: 21 Times Celebrities Revealed Wildly Juicy, Shady, Or Even Disturbing Things In Interviews 'When I bought Big Machine, I thought I was going to work with all the artists on [it]. I thought it was going to be an exciting thing,' Scooter began. 'Taylor, she and I had only met three or four times. And one of the times, years earlier, it was really a great engagement; she invited me to her private party, she respected me.' 'In between that time since I'd seen her last, I started managing Kanye West, I managed Justin Bieber. I knew she didn't get along with them,' he continued. 'This is where my arrogance came in — I had a feeling she probably didn't like me cause I managed them, but I thought that once this announcement happened, she would talk to me, see who I am, and we would work together.' Scooter told Steven that he was set to call Taylor to discuss their future when her Tumblr post went live, leaving him 'shocked.' However, he also insisted that the experience gave him a newfound empathy for the people he does work with, saying: 'I'd always say: 'Yeah, I understand', but I never knew what it was like to be on the global stage like that.' "I never knew what criticism like that felt like,' Scooter continued. 'And like I told you, the biggest gift that I got from that was understanding that all the praise I had received up until that moment was not deserved, and all the hate I got after that moment was not deserved, because none of these people knew me. She didn't know me." As it happens, Scooter ended up selling Taylor's catalog, including all associated videos and artwork, to Shamrock Holdings for more than $300 million in October 2020, just over a year after he bought Big Machine. The following month, Taylor issued a statement revealing that her and Scooter's respective teams had been in negotiations for her to regain ownership of the masters, but she backed out when his team allegedly asked her to sign an 'ironclad NDA' stating that she would never say another word about Scooter 'unless it was positive.' Taylor went on to say that she was 'open' to partner with Shamrock when they initially reached out to her, but was left dismayed when she learned that the terms of Scooter's sale meant that his company would continue to profit from her work. 'As soon as we started communication with Shamrock, I learned that under their terms Scooter Braun will continue to profit off my old musical catalog for many years,' she wrote. 'I was hopeful and open to the possibility of a partnership with Shamrock, but Scooter's participation is a non-starter for me.' As you probably know, this entire mess led to Taylor rerecording her first six albums — complete with brand new tracks 'from the vault' — in order to have ownership of her music. And Taylor only had her self-titled debut and 2017 album Reputation left to re-release when she announced at the end of last month that she'd bought the rights to the original master recordings from Shamrock for a reported $360 million. Powerball draw 1517: Lucky Aussie wins ENTIRE $100 million jackpot
One lucky Aussie's life has just changed forever after taking out Powerball's incredible $100 million jackpot. Australia's newest multi-millionaire was the only winner in tonight's draw, which was Powerball's biggest jackpot of the year. The jackpot doubled after last week's $50m draw failed to be won. While not many details are known about the winner yet, they now officially share the title of Australia's third-highest lottery winner. What is known is that the ticket was purchased in either NSW or the ACT. With this week's massive offering, officials from The Lott anticipated up to half of all adults in the country would be purchasing a ticket. Tonight's winning numbers are: 28, 10, 3, 16, 31, 14 and 21, with the all-important Powerball number 6. The last big win was back in early May, when a man from Cessnock in NSW became an instant multi-millionaire with an incredible $30m win. He burst into uncontrollable laughter when he heard the good news, and said he saw the win as a sign of good things to come after having a "rough trot" lately. 'I just had this ticket on the fridge. I was looking at it this afternoon and thought, 'wouldn't it be lovely to win'," he told The Lott. 'The ticket was there with all the bills. There will be no more worrying about bills now. I don't care if I get a bill now!" Only six Aussies know what it's like to win $100m. One of those lucky winners was a Queensland woman who took home half of the record-breaking $200m Powerball jackpot last February. Reflecting on her win more than a year on, the new millionaire revealed she's since embraced a sea change, relocating from the suburb of Hawthorne in Brisbane to a serene coastal home. "I often speak with my partner about the version of us from last year to now, and if only we knew what was to come," she said. "On a day-to-day basis, not a huge amount has changed. I still get up for the 6am gym session, and the dog still needs to be walked and fed. The longer-term vision we have for our life is slowly coming together." Do you have a story tip? Elizabeth Hurley poses nude for 60th birthday, celebrates 'love' with Billy Ray Cyrus
Elizabeth Hurley is marking her 60th birthday by professing her 'love' for new boyfriend Billy Ray Cyrus and celebrating the milestone occasion in her birthday suit. 'Happy birthday to me! This year has already been a wild ride,' Hurley wrote alongside a nude photo of herself on Instagram. She went on to namecheck her longstanding business partnership with beauty brand Estée Lauder, the 20th anniversary of her eponymous swimwear company, and being 'in love' with Cyrus, whom she went public with back in April. 'Feeling very blessed and grateful for having the best friends & family in the world,' Hurley continued, adding that the snap was 'taken this afternoon… in my birthday suit.' In the photo, Hurley beamed happily as she was captured sitting in a sun-drenched grassy field with her legs crossed. Cyrus shared a photo of himself cuddling Hurley and called the actress 'the love of my life.' Meanwhile, Hurley's celeb pals and fans also took an opportunity to wish her a happy birthday. Her son, Damien, commented on her post 'Hahahah I LOVE YOU ♥️♥️♥️ happy birthday mama xxx.' Actress Patsy Kensit called Hurley 'the most beautiful kind human being' and said she was happy to see her friend finding joy again with her 'true love Billy, who is so fabulous.' America's Got Talent judge Heidi Klum called Hurley 'beautiful, smart and funny' as she shared her best wishes. 'I have never seen a more gorgeous 60-year-old,' one fan praised, while another added, 'Birthday suit suits you.' A third commenter wrote, 'Amazing woman. Amazing face. Amazing body. You spread positivity. Happy Birthday.' Hurley's birthday revelation comes after she debuted her new romance with Cyrus in April. After going Instagram official over Easter, the new couple shared a pair of loved-up images on social media, showing their infatuation with one another is real. Hurley, who met Cyrus while filming the 2022 holiday movie Christmas in Paradise, shared the snaps to her Instagram, captioning the head-over-heels photos: 'Tennessee weekend.' 'Liz spent a beautiful couple of weeks in Tennessee with Billy Ray,' a source told PEOPLE. 'She loved being surrounded by nature in a more laid-back environment. She had a great time with Billy Ray.' Cyrus and Hurley 'appreciate each other's love and friendship,' the insider added. 'They have a very special connection.' According to a source speaking to Us Weekly, the Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery star and the Achy Breaky Heart singer, 63, had been dating in secret for about four months before going public. 'Liz's friends have known about it for a while. It's not a new thing,' another insider close to Hurley told the outlet. 'She had sworn them to secrecy, and they didn't tell anyone outside her tight circle.' Another confidante said that after being 'friends for years … it turned romantic recently. Things are going well.' One source told Page Six that the relationship is the real deal. 'This is not a hoax,' a friend spilled to the outlet. 'Liz is not a hoaxy person; she's very sincere, very bright and I think she likes him.' After making their social media debut, the pair walked the red carpet at the Orizzonti/Rosso exhibition in Rome last month. The duo's glam appearance in Italy came as a source told PEOPLE that Hurley 'doesn't care' that fans don't understand her romance with the musician. 'Liz doesn't care that skeptics don't get it. She's focused on the special things that they have in common, like country music,' the insider said. 'She loves his Southern vibes. He's very calm and happy around her.' In an interview with Apple Music's The Ty Bentli Show in April, Cyrus opened up on how the two reconnected after filming Christmas in Paradise together. 'We did very few scenes together but the couple times we were in the same scene there was a chemistry there,' Cyrus told Bentli, according to excerpts of the interview that were published by PEOPLE and Entertainment Tonight. 'We just laughed, and it was at a time I wasn't laughing a lot.' After splitting from his wife Tish, Cyrus went on to marry singer Firerose in 2023. When that relationship ended, Cyrus said that he received a text from Hurley out of the blue. ''Hey, it looks like life might be a little bit tough and just wanted you to know I'm in your corner. You've got a friend in your corner,'' the message read, as told by Cyrus to Bentli. mdaniell@ Elizabeth Hurley and Billy Ray Cyrus cozy up in new IG pics Elizabeth Hurley and older sister sizzle in bikinis Elizabeth Hurley shuts down theory she took Prince Harry's virginity
