Sharjah Architecture Triennial 2026 appoints curators
Sharjah Architecture Triennial (SAT) has announced Vyjayanthi Rao as curator of its third edition (SAT03), joined by Tau Tavengwa as associate curator.
Taking place in 2026, the Triennial is a platform for architecture and urbanism from West Asia to South Asia and the African continent.
An anthropologist, writer, artist, and curator based in New York and Mumbai, Rao brings a multidisciplinary perspective and a deep sensitivity to context in her work. With a background in socio-cultural anthropology, her writing has contributed significantly to critical discourse on urbanism and the built environment, with a focus on India and the United States, and her practice increasingly bridges research and public engagement.
For SAT03, Rao works closely with London and Cape Town-based architect, curator, and publisher Tavengwa, continuing a rich dialogue that began with their curatorial collaboration for the 2022 Lisbon Architecture Triennale. Tavengwa is the founder and editor of Cityscapes Magazine, a publication dedicated to exploring urbanism from a Global South perspective, and the co-founder of CS Studio, an interdisciplinary urbanism studio.
Mona El-Mousfy, advisor for the Sharjah Architecture Triennial, commented: "We are thrilled to have Vyjayanthi Rao as curator for our upcoming edition. Her deep knowledge of urbanism, with her particular focus on South Asian cities and neighborhoods, brings invaluable insight to the project. With her background in anthropology and her research-driven approach, she will undoubtedly offer a fresh perspective to this edition.
"Vyjayanthi has invited her long-time collaborator, Tau Tavengwa, to join as associate curator. Tau is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of the field and reimagining the architecture Triennial model alongside her."
The curators will collaborate closely with the Triennial team to build on its ongoing initiatives in the public realm, drawing on its deep knowledge of the city and community networks, while contributing broader perspectives on architecture's role in shaping more sustainable, inclusive, and responsive cities. Aligning with the Sharjah Architecture Triennial's focus on process as a means of idea generation, Rao and Tavengwa invite SAT03 to adopt a propositional, rather than representational, approach.
Rao and Tau said: "We are hugely grateful for the opportunity to contribute to such an important and distinctive platform as the Sharjah Architecture Triennial. Through our collaboration, we hope to open up new ways of thinking about what a triennial like Sharjah can become over time - leaving behind tangible strategies and ideas that respond to the needs and challenges of contemporary urban centres across the Global South and beyond."
Hoor Al Qasimi, President and Director of the Sharjah Architecture Triennial, commente: "Rao's practice, which offers vital insights into urbanisation, aligns with the context of SAT and Sharjah's ongoing urban transformation. Her work speaks directly to the Triennial's mission in terms of our commitment to research, innovation and knowledge-sharing, and we are excited to support both her and Tau in fostering a public-facing conversation around the critical, and complex, issues of today."
On May 10, 2025, Sharjah Architecture Triennial will host "Meet the Curators of the 2026 SAT Edition," a public event at SAT headquarters, Al Qasimiyah School, marking the first official appearance of Vyjayanthi Rao and Tau Tavengwa as SAT03 curator and associate curator. This gathering will offer audiences a unique opportunity to engage with the newly appointed team as they share initial insights into their curatorial approach and vision for the upcoming edition. The conversation will unfold in dialogue with members of the SAT team, offering a first look into the conceptual framework shaping SAT03.

Bahrain in a new dimension
Bahrain-based shutterbug George Raphel has unveiled his first 3D photography exhibition, featuring 20 stunning pieces that pay homage to the kingdom. The showcase – Anaglyph Photography Exhibition: A Stereoscopic Journey into Bahrain's Soul – is currently open for viewing and is a tribute to what the 44-year-old has called home for the last 16 years. 'Through this exhibition I am trying to translate my feelings for this country,' the professional photographer told GulfWeekly. 'This my first 3D exhibition, and I believe it is the first time anyone has captured Bahrain in 3D. These images were taken between 2023 and 2025,' he added. 'Anaglyph is a stereoscopic technique that involves capturing two photographs using a specialised camera rig and then digitally superimposing them to create the final image. To view this image, special 3D glasses are required.' Some of the iconic monuments and heritage brought alive in the exhibition include the Bahrain Fort, the Khamis Mosque and the kingdom's maritime tradition. 'The black-and-white image of a dhow is my favourite, as it may evoke memories of my hometown in Kochi, Kerala, where there is also a boatyard near my house,' said the Juffair resident, who lives with his wife Hima Joy, Brainobrain Bahrain director, and daughter Olive, a grade six student of Bahrain Indian School. George fell in love with photography during his high school years. He decided to pursue a degree in the field, which catapulted his career. 'I pursued a degree in photography at Shari Academy in Mumbai. Following my graduation in 2005, I joined one of the leading publications in Dubai. 'In 2009, I was transferred to Bahrain, where I established my media production company in 2014. Our company specialises in commercial and corporate photography and videography services,' he added. Not one to rest on his laurels, George is currently engaged in the development of another series and aspires to exhibit it by the end of this year. The showcase runs at Downtown Rotana in Manama until August-end. Entry is free and visitors will be provided 3D glasses at the venue.

Bahrain-based Filipino expatriate couple Aileen and Brian Amado never imagined that a chance decision to enrol their son Brent for music classes during the Covid-19 pandemic would lead to him serenading an international audience someday, writes Melissa Nazareth. The 10-year-old creative talent, who attends the Sacred Heart School Bahrain, has now been recognised for his musical achievements, alongside 100 other young achievers from diverse fields, across 130 countries worldwide. Global Child Prodigy Awards 2025, a world-renowned platform celebrating the brightest young talents from across the globe, will honour the children in a ceremony on June 26 at the Member's Dining Room in the House of Commons, British Parliament, the UK. 'We're proud of Brent's achievement and his dedication toward music,' Aileen told GulfWeekly. 'During the pandemic, we couldn't go out. We decided to enrol Brent for music lessons, so he would have some activity to keep him engaged. A private tutor came home and taught him. He was just six and not really focused but his teacher observed that he was a fast learner. We were patient with him and let him learn at his pace. Eventually, he started liking it and hasn't looked back since.' Last year, the multi-talented prodigy who also enjoys chess, swimming, art and Taekwondo, enthralled the audience at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York after winning third place at the American Protégé competition. Brent's past awards include a bronze medal at the World Classical Music Awards (2022), a gold and bronze at the Gulf Musician Idol in 2022 and 2023 respectively, and a bronze and silver at the London Young Musician in 2022 and 2023 respectively. 'We started receiving invitations to enter international competitions and decided to apply,' Aileen revealed, and the rest, as they say, is history. When Brent is not tickling the ivories, he is busy hitting the keys on his keyboard, playing Minecraft, or pursuing other hobbies. 'We want him to experience each discipline and then later on, he can do what he really wants,' Brian, who works with a luxury retail house, added.
