Will Maha govt take action against ATS officials: Owaisi

Hans India21-07-2025
Hyderabad: After the Bombay High Court on Monday acquitted 12 men in the 2006 Mumbai train blasts case, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi asked if the Government of Maharashtra will take action against officers of Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) who investigated the case.
The Hyderabad MP posted on social media platform 'X' that for 12 Muslim men who were in jail for 18 years for a crime they didn't commit, their prime life was gone, while there was no closure for over 180 families who lost their loved ones, and those who were injured. 'Will Government take action against officers of Maharashtra ATS who investigated this case?' he asked.
'Innocent people are sent to jail and then years later when they are released from jail there is no possibility for reconstruction of their lives. From last 17 years these accused are in jail. They haven't stepped out even for a day. The majority of their prime life is gone,' wrote Owaisi.
Nineteen years after the 2006 Mumbai train blasts claimed 189 lives and left over 800 people injured, the Bombay High Court on Monday acquitted all 12 people convicted by a lower court in the serial bombing case. In 2015, a trial court had convicted these 12 accused, sentencing five of them to death and the others to life imprisonment.
Setting aside the trial court order, the high court bench of Justice Anil Kilor and Justice Shyam Chandak said the prosecution had "utterly failed" to prove the case against the accused.
The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president slammed the police for the way they handle terror cases. 'In such cases where there is a public outcry, the approach by police is always to first assume guilt and then go from there. Police officers take press conferences in such cases, and the way the media covers the case, it kind of decides the guilt of a person. In many such terror cases, investigating agencies have failed us miserably," posted Owaisi.
'Please remember which parties where (were) ruling Maharashtra in 2006 they are also responsible for disregarding complaints of torture ,& of course the 6pm & 9pm (So called) Nationalist who passed judgments on the guilt of the accused,' he added.
Citing the case of Mohammed Majid, one of the 12 men acquitted, Owaisi said his wife died without a final conversation with Majid.
The father of Faisal and Muzammil, two brothers who are among those acquitted, died of a heart attack after hearing the verdict of death and life sentence for his sons. Their mother died in 2023, wrote the MP.

Chhangur Baba, accused of running religious conversion racket, money laundering, send to five-day ED custody

Chhangur Baba alias Jalaluddin was remanded to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody on Monday by a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Lucknow. The court was hearing a case related to a money laundering investigation against Chhangur and his associates linked to an alleged illegal conversion racket in Uttar Pradesh, officials said. According to a PTI report, Chhangur Baba alias Jalaluddin alias Karimulla Shah has been in jail in the predicate offence case being investigated by the Uttar Pradesh Police's Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS). The ED had applied to the court for his custody following which it was allowed a five-day remand of the accused till August 1, the officials said. He will be questioned in jail and his statement will be recorded under the PMLA, they added. Earlier this month, the federal agency had conducted searches at Chhangur's native place in Balrampur district and two locations in Mumbai. The ED had said that the accused had received funds worth ₹ 60 crore in 22 bank accounts, including 'large amounts' from abroad. The money-laundering case against Chhangur Baba stems from the ATS FIR filed at a police station in Lucknow's Gomti Nagar under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, 2021. Chhangur Baba, his son Mehboob and alleged associates Naveen Rohra alias Jamaluddin and Neetu Rohra alias Nasreen were arrested by the ATS. They are currently lodged in a jail. Chhangur Baba has been accused of being involved in a 'large-scale' conspiracy which includes religious conversions, utilisation of foreign funds, and activities posing a potential threat to national security, as reported by PTI. The ED said, 'Chhangur Baba and his associates are alleged to have established an extensive network operating from the premises of the Chand Auliya Dargah in Balrampur, where he regularly organised large gatherings attended by both Indian and foreign nationals.' 'He is accused of systematically inducing, coercing, and manipulating indiduals of other faiths, particularly Scheduled Castes, and economically disadvantaged persons belonging to Hindu religion, into religous conversion,' the probe agency added. The ED searches also led to the seizure of a number of documents that show that the 'proceeds of crime' (illicit funds) were majorly transferred to different people for purchasing a number of immovable properties worth crores of rupees and carrying out construction in these properties. All the immovable assets acquired by Chhangur Baba are in the names of Naveen Rohra and Neetu Rohra to conceal his actual involvement in money laundering, the ED has said.

Commercial movies, TV serials cannot be shot in forests and other protected areas, says Kerala High Court

Maintaining that a 2013 Government Order (GO) on filming of commercial movies and TV serials in forest areas, national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and tiger reserves did not have the force of law, the Kerala High Court has held that there is no legislation that permitted the shooting of commercial movies in such places. The State government's reliance on the GO and a fee that had been prescribed for shooting movies in such protected areas is without statutory support and a clear policy framework. Permitting commercial filmmaking and TV serials cannot be approached in a pedantic manner, and the State has to consider not only the statutory provision but also the settled principles of environmental governance, the court said. It further directed the government to issue appropriate follow-up instructions in this regard to Forest department officials within four weeks. The Division Bench of Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Basant Balaji issued the directive disposing of a petition by Angels Nair, general secretary of Animal Legal Force Integration, Ernakulam, challenging the permission granted to shoot a movie in a forest area.

Op Sindoor debate: How can 'gora' in White House declare ceasefire? asks Owaisi; opposes India-Pak Asia Cup match

AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi NEW DELHI: AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday lashed out at the government over US President Donald Trump declaring a ceasefire between India and Pakistan before New Delhi's official statement on May 10. During a debate in Lok Sabha on Operation Sindoor , Owaisi asked: "How can a ' gora' sitting in the White House announce a ceasefire on India's behalf? Is this your nationalism? If Uncle Sam [Trump] makes the announcement, what message does that send to our armed forces? A naval officer stationed at sea must be didn't my own Prime Minister declare the ceasefire?" "The success of Operation Sindoor created euphoria across the nation, but unfortunately, the government failed to capitalise on it. I say this with responsibility: The Pakistani Army, its ISI, and its deep state have only one objective -- to weaken India." Owaisi also lashed out at the government over an India-Pakistan Asia Cup cricket match scheduled to take place on September 14 in the UAE. The Hyderabad MP said: "The Prime Minister once said, blood and water cannot flow together, and talks and terror cannot go hand in hand. In that case, after the killing of civilians in Baisaran valley, does your conscience permit playing a cricket match with Pakistan? You've cut off trade ties, shut down airspace, and stopped 80% of engagement, but you're still ready to play cricket? On what moral ground?' Owaisi also sought accountability on the Pahalgam attack, saying: How did the four rats [terrorists] slip in and massacre civilians?' 'What deterrence are you talking about? You carried out surgical strikes, you bombed Balakot, yet Pahalgam still happened. This shows your deterrence has failed. Your Kashmir policy has failed. And then, a country we consider our strategic ally, its head of state, invites the Pakistani army chief, the very man whose speech provoked the massacre of our people. How is that acceptable?' Oawisi asked.
