Barges carrying fireworks ablaze in Japan, five flee into sea
Aerial footage by public broadcaster NHK on Monday (Aug 4) night showed one of the vessels ablaze in the sea off Yokohama -- a city south of Tokyo -- with pink and white sparks flying in all directions.

One of the barges was carrying five workers, all of whom jumped into the sea to escape and were later rescued, the Yokohama coastguard bureau said Monday.
One worker sustained an injury, which local media reports said was minor.
Organisers of the summer festival were quoted by NHK as telling investigators that they "lost control of the fireworks on the boats", with police and the coastguard probing causes of the incident.
Fireworks are a fixture of Japan's summer, drawing crowds of festivalgoers -- from couples to friends and families -- often clad in "yukata" summer kimonos. - Reuters

Ex-Arsenal player Partey in UK court charged with rape, sexual assault
LONDON (Reuters) -Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey appeared in a London court on Tuesday, charged with raping two women while he was a player for the English Premier League soccer club. Partey, a Ghana international, is accused of five counts of rape relating to two women, plus a charge of sexual assault against a third woman, between April 2021 and June 2022. The 32-year-old sat in the dock at Westminster Magistrates' Court dressed in black during the brief hearing and spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address. Prosecutor Jocelyn Ledward said that two of the charges Partey faces relate to him allegedly anally raping one complainant during consensual sex on separate occasions. Partey was granted bail ahead of his next court appearance at London's Old Bailey court on September 2. His lawyer previously said in a statement that Partey denies the charges and welcomes the opportunity to clear his name. Partey was signed by Arsenal from Atletico Madrid for 50 million euros ($57.7 million) in 2020 and became a key member of the English side's first team, making 52 appearances in all competitions last season. He was first arrested in July 2022, though he was not named at the time and continued to play for Arsenal while investigations were ongoing. His contract with the Premier League club expired last month. British media have reported Partey is close to joining Spanish side Villarreal on a free transfer and Judge Paul Goldspring said during Tuesday's hearing that Partey would soon be moving to Spain. Soccer-Chinese club Shandong given 2-year ban from Asian club competition after no-show
(Reuters) -Chinese club Shandong Taishan has been banned from Asian club competition for two years for its no-show against South Korean side Ulsan HD in the Asian Champions League (ACL) Elite in February. The Chinese Super League side pulled out hours before the February 19 match, blaming "serious physical discomfort" of players and saying they were unable to form a team. The Asian Football Confederation's (AFC) Disciplinary and Ethics Commission said Shandong would not be able to play in the AFC's club competitions up to and including the 2026/27 season editions, and fined the club $50,000. It also ordered Shandong to return a participation fee of $600,000 and a performance bonus of $200,000 to the AFC along with compensation of $40,000 to Ulsan "in respect of damages and losses claimed" by the South Korean club. Shandong's pull-out came days after the club said it had banned supporters for "inappropriate behaviour" during a home ACL match against South Korean team Gwangju after fans in the crowd displayed images of South Korea's last military dictator Chun Doo-hwan. Hundreds of people are estimated to have died or gone missing when the South Korean government violently put down the Gwangju uprising by pro-democracy protesters in May 1980, when Chun was the de facto leader of the country after leading a military coup. Ukraine's drone attack sparks fires in Rostov region, Russia says
(Reuters) -An overnight Ukrainian drone attack sparked several fires, including at a power substation, in the southern Russian region of Rostov, the acting regional governor said on Tuesday. There were no injuries as a result of the attack and the fire at the substation on an area of about 500 square metres (5,400 square feet) has been extinguished, Rostov's acting governor, Yuri Slyusar, said on the Telegram messaging app. Russia's defence units destroyed a total of 24 Ukrainian drones overnight, including seven over the Rostov region, which has been a frequent target of Ukraine's strikes, Russia's defence ministry said on Telegram. The ministry reports only the number of downed drones, not how many Ukraine launched. Reuters could not independently verify the reports, and there was no immediate comment from Kyiv. Ukraine has frequently said its attacks inside Russia are aimed at destroying infrastructure key to Moscow's war efforts and are in response to Russia's continued strikes on Ukraine.
