Liverpool star's comment hints what Trent Alexander-Arnold's team-mates really think
Trent Alexander-Arnold scored Liverpool's winner just five minutes after returning from injury and Ryan Gravenberch has revealed what his team-mates really think of him
While some Liverpool fans have tried to dull the pain of losing Trent Alexander-Arnold by saying the team doesn't need him, Ryan Gravenberch admits he is key.
Alexander-Arnold took just five minutes after his introduction following nearly six weeks out with an ankle injury to fire home Liverpool's winner at Leicester. It was his 23rd goal for Liverpool and his first with his left foot to put Arne Slot 's Reds just three points away from a record-equalling 20th title. Gravenberch says the England star is vital for Liverpool and he has four goals and seven assists, despite enduring three separate injury lay-offs this season.
'I'm really happy for him,' he said. 'He was injured and he came back. You saw how important he can be for us.'
Alexander-Arnold, 26, is set to join Real Madrid on a free transfer in a move which was decided months ago.
As hurt as some Liverpool fans are to see their home-grown hero and lifelong Red go, he is following a path well worn down the years by the likes of Kevin Keegan, Graeme Souness, Steve McManaman and Georginio Wijnaldum. All four went abroad and Alexander-Arnold wants to win La Ligas and Champion Leagues with Real.
Maybe he sees a move to Real hurting Liverpool less and he will not be competing with his boyhood club domestically. Certainly, Gravenberch's comments show the Liverpool dressing room understands every player must do what they feel is right for them, even if it hurts the club.
Alexander-Arnold loves Liverpool and that was clear in his goal celebration at Leicester, which was a real cathartic moment. He has been hurt by the accusations that his heart has wandered from the Reds.
He was pained by the abuse he suffered in the draw against Manchester United at Anfield in early January after it emerged Real had failed with a cheeky £20million bid for him. Alexander-Arnold enjoyed his moment at Leicester and he will enjoy hoisting that Premier League trophy aloft on May 25 after Liverpool's final game.
He will then leave for Madrid having been a key figure during one of Liverpool's most-gloried spells, having won one Champions League, two Premier Leagues, one FA Cup, one League Cup, one UEFA Super Cup and one FIFA Club World Cup. Maybe he will come back in three or four years and who knows what the future holds?
Alexander-Arnold's focus will be on wrapping up his second title and Liverpool want that moment to come on Sunday against Tottenham at Anfield. They will become champions if Arsenal lose at home to Crystal Palace on Wednesday and Gravenberch says they would prefer to breast the finishing tape in front of their home crowd against Spurs.
'We need one more win, of course, and hopefully we can finish it in our home,' he said. 'We're really looking forward to that.'

'I watch the Club World Cup for free on DAZN'
The Mirror's TV writer Jake Hackney joined DAZN to watch the FIFA Club World Cup for free, but the streaming platform's other features left him impressed The FIFA Club World Cup kicked off earlier this month, so the Mirror's TV writer Jake Hackney set up a free DAZN account to see what all the hype is about. Like many Brits, Jake always linked DAZN with boxing, but as that's never been his sport, he was yet to truly delve into the platform. DAZN is now the sole global broadcaster of all 63 matches in the Club World Cup and is showing every game for free. FIFA has really pulled out all the stops with the competition, giving it a makeover with a new format featuring 32 of the world's top clubs. Manchester City and Chelsea are flying the flag for the Premier League, along with the likes of Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Miami and Boca Juniors. The tournament runs until the final on July 13, and football fans can sign up for a free DAZN account to watch every match. As Jake previously told the Mirror, he found it odd not watching football on the BBC or Sky Sports, but given the quality of content and amount of extras available on DAZN, he believes the streaming platform will become more associated with football in the future. Jake opted for the free account, but there's also the option to upgrade to DAZN's Premium plan from £9.99. This includes every Club World Cup match in HDR picture quality and Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound, plus highlights, replays, fewer adverts and full access to the rest of the DAZN platform. But even with a free account, there's plenty of football content to keep fans entertained in the gap between the Premier League and EFL seasons. What struck Jake was the sheer volume of content available beyond the live matches, with a plethora of features, shows and compilations readily accessible on the Club World Cup homepage. Interviews with big names such as Harry Kane and Pep Guardiola are featured, along with DAZN's 'Icons' series, which offers an in-depth look at each team and the 12 USA host cities. Since signing up to DAZN, Jake has found himself engrossed in the amount of documentaries focusing on football greats like Cristiano Ronaldo, Maradona and Brazilian Ronaldo. There's a treasure trove of vintage footage showcasing all the goals scored by specific teams at previous FIFA World Cups, featuring legends like Alessandro Del Piero, Raúl and Didier Drogba. In short, there's a feast of content to delve into on DAZN. It's also straightforward to keep up with the latest competition, with every forthcoming fixture displayed on the Club World Cup homepage complete with dates and kick-off times, as well as the option to view the group brackets and tables, making it simple to stay updated with the current standings. One can track their favourite teams in the competition to receive a push notification before their games, with Jake following Chelsea and Man City. DAZN sends him reminders about each of their fixtures, though with some kicking off in the early hours, he'll opt to watch the DAZN highlights instead. For those who aren't keen on adding another subscription to their list, DAZN has sublicensed a selection of matches to Channel 5, meaning 23 games will be shown on both DAZN and Channel 5. This could be a good alternative for football fans who aren't as tech-savvy or don't mind missing out on some games. Of course, there's always the traditional Sky Sports package that costs £35 per month on a 24-month contract, in addition to essential Sky TV. This includes nine dedicated channels, covering the Premier League, Football, Cricket, Golf, F1, Boxing, NFL, NBA, Netball and much more, although the length of the contract might be a drawback for some. DAZN boasts an impressive lineup of pundits for its Club World Cup coverage, including none other than Brazilian legend Ronaldo. Other big names include John Obi Mikel and Sami Khedira, with Conor McNamara, Andros Townsend, Brad Friedel, Rob Green among the commentators, offering a refreshing change from the usual voices on Sky or TNT Sports. Jake has been using DAZN on both his Samsung smart TV and iPhone 13 and it's performed largely well. There have been moments where it's been slightly slow to respond and there's been a bit of lag, but once a live game or documentary has loaded up, he has encountered no major problems.

Arsenal target stunning Eze transfer swoop years after leaving star 'in tears'
Arsenal have contacted Eberechi Eze's representatives to discuss signing the Crystal Palace star, who they released aged 13 but are interested in signing this summer Arsenal could be about to offer Eberechi Eze the chance to resurrect his childhood dream. The Gunners are interested the signing the Crystal Palace star, who enjoyed his best season yet last term. Eze, 26, memorably scored the winning goal for Palace in this year's FA Cup final and has made himself regular in England squads. And now the playmaker could be set for Champions League football. Mirror Football reported on Friday that talks between Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta and Eze's representatives have taken place, and the Gunners are now considering triggering his £68million release clause. Arsenal would be competing with north London rivals Tottenham, as new Spurs boss Thomas Frank is understood to be a big fan of the 26-year-old. But Berta could make use a trump card thanks to Eze's past. The England international played for Arsenal as a youngster, only to be released aged 13 in a crushing blow to his hopes of becoming a professional footballer. "I remember crying in my room for a solid week, my mum telling me that it's going to be okay but not being able to get over it," Eze told the Independent in 2020. "Then I went to Fulham and I was finally starting to enjoy my football again. "We played Arsenal a few months later but, when I went over to shake the academy manager's hand, I started welling up. All the feelings came back." Eze's eventual breakthrough with Queens Park Rangers was testament to his resilience, having also been snubbed by Millwall and Sunderland. The future Wembley hero considered quitting football and getting a part-time job at Tesco before QPR snapped him up. The pain of his early struggles still fuels him, telling BBC Sport in May: "I remember the deflation. But all I kept asking myself was: 'When's the next trial? When's the next trial?'" Should Arsenal pay £68million for Eberechi Eze? Have your say in the comments section. Eze is under contract at Palace until 2027 and the Eagles will be hoping to convince him to stay for at least one more season after they qualified for the Europa League by winning the FA Cup. Their entry, however, is subject to a UEFA decision over whether or not both Palace and French giants Lyon can be in European competition due to shared ownership links. "I really hope that that's not the case and I hope that Palace do get the reward for that (FA Cup win), because of what it took to actually achieve it," Eze commented last month. "It would be a huge shame if that was the case, but I'm trusting that it will work out in the end. I'm sure it will work itself out and it should work itself out, because there are players who have worked to be in this position. "There are fans who have been with the team throughout the whole season and experienced everything. It would be unfortunate, but I'm positive that it won't be the case."

Liverpool book medical for seventh summer transfer - but Bayern eyeing two stars
Liverpool have already spent £216million to sign six players in the summer transfer window but aren't showing signs of slowing down, with another player imminent It has been an extremely busy start to the summer transfer window at Liverpool, who have already signed six players and spent £216million. After a quiet summer of 2024, in which Federico Chiesa was the only arrival, the Reds have made the most of this time to reinforce their title-winning squad. Arne Slot 's side have been bolstered by some exciting signings, with Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez and Freddie Woodman the most recent. Wirtz joined from Bayer Leverkusen for £116m, while Kerkez left Bournemouth for Merseyside in a £40m deal. They are joined by Jeremie Frimpong (Bayer Leverkusen: £29.5m), Armin Pecsi (Puskas Akademia: £1.5m), Giorgi Mamardashvili (Valencia: £29m) and Woodman (Preston: free) on the shopping list. There are more deals brewing, too. Sporting director Richard Hughes is not taking his foot off the gas and has some more irons in the fire. Here Mirror Football takes a look at the latest news and rumours surrounding the club. Deal agreed for Blackpool star Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign Blackpool midfielder Gabriel Schluter. Football Insider reports that the 16-year-old is set to have a medical with the club next week ahead of a transfer for a six-figure fee. Schluter has reportedly caught the eye of several scouts and Fulham and Stockport had been among the other clubs to contact Blackpool. But it is Liverpool who have won the race and will hope that the young midfielder can develop in their famed academy. Blackpool boss Steve Bruce spoke recently about his annoyance at bigger clubs being able to poach young players like Schluter. 'If a Premier League team comes calling, then we understand. It's frustrating, but they are the rules,' he said. 'It wouldn't surprise me if the kid had suitors from a higher level because he's a very good footballer. If you've got a good young player, it doesn't take long for the football world to know where they are – it's a small pool we pick from.' Bayern eye Reds duo Bayern Munich could pursue Luis Diaz or Cody Gakpo after missing out on other targets. Bayern have lost Leroy Sane and need reinforcements on the wing, but have been slow off the mark for other players. Sporting director Max Eberl has missed out on Jamie Gittens, who is leaving Borussia Dortmund for Chelsea, and Nico Williams, who is poised to swap Athletic Bilbao for Barcelona. Sky Sports Germany reporter Christian Falk has reported that Diaz and Gakpo could be other options. Diaz has previously been linked with Barca and has just two years left on his contract, while Gakpo's representatives have reportedly also held exploratory talks with Eberl. It is clearly early stages for now, but Bayern could be a club to watch in the coming weeks. Konate stalemate Liverpool were successful in signing Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah to new contracts recently, but haven't had such luck with Ibrahima Konate. The French defender has rejected the initial offer put forward and was reportedly 'disappointed' by how the club values him. Konate is Van Dijk's regular central defensive partner and was key to the title win. Yet he is entering the final 12 months of his contract and there appears to be a stalemate. According to FootMercato, Konate is looking for a 'change of scenery' next summer and will therefore run down his contract. Real Madrid are among those interested in the centre-back.
