Ryan Gravenberch ban truth as Community Shield theory debunked after Liverpool red card

Ryan Gravenberch will not miss the Community Shield due to the red card he received on the final day of the Premier League season. Instead, the midfielder's suspension will carry over to the start of the new league campaign in August. It means Gravenberch, who played 49 games this term, will be eligible for the annual curtain raiser when Liverpool takes on Crystal Palace in the Community Shield. The date for that match has not been set but it will be played at Wembley on the weekend of August 9-10. The new Premier League season will start the following week, with the initial fixture list to be released on June 18. The midfielder was shown a straight red card in the 68th minute of the Reds' final match of the season, also against Palace. Having miscontrolled the ball as Liverpool's last man back, Gravenberch lunged to regain possession but instead felled Daichi Kamada with the Palace man set to have a clear run at goal. Referee Darren England had little choice but to administer a straight red card despite teammate Virgil van Dijk's remonstrations. It meant a disappointing end to what was a fantastic season for Gravenberch, who won the Premier League Young Player of the Year Award. The 23-year-old started 37 of the 38 league games, the exception being the trip to Chelsea immediately after Liverpool was crowned champion. He is also likely to be selected in the PFA Premier League Team of the Season. Gravenberch's transformation into a holding midfielder proved to be integral to Liverpool's successful campaign, especially after missing out on Martin Zubimendi the previous summer. The Dutchman's impressive displays, flanked alongside Alexis Mac Allister were instrumental in Liverpool amassing such a huge lead at the top of the table heading into the spring months. 'During a phone call in the first conversation I had with Arne, he said to me: 'I see you as a No.8 but I want to try you as a No.6'," Gravenberch told The Athletic in a recent interview. "I played there against Manchester United in pre-season and after that game, he just put me there. I was like: 'OK, let's do it'. From that moment, I only played as a No.6. "I didn't play a lot in that position before but this season, that position has made me who I am now. I am not naturally a defensive midfielder. I also like to drive forward with the ball. It's been good so far."

Journalist Heaps Praise on ‘Magnificent' Liverpool Star After Premier League Title Win

Ryan Gravenberch: Liverpool's Breakout Star Under Slot's Reign When Liverpool confirmed the signing of Ryan Gravenberch from Bayern Munich, the reception was mixed. Many fans and pundits questioned whether the Dutch midfielder could adapt to the demands of English football. Fast forward less than a year, and the narrative has shifted dramatically. Advertisement Gravenberch has not only silenced critics, he has emerged as one of the standout players of the Premier League season. In his first year under the management of Arne Slot, who remarkably guided Liverpool to their first Premier League title since 2020, Gravenberch thrived in a role that seemed tailor-made for his unique blend of physicality and finesse. David Lynch, speaking to Dave Davis for Anfield Index, encapsulated the surprise and admiration felt by many: 'If I had to pick a player that impressed me the most then it would have to be Ryan Gravenberch.' Expectations Exceeded Few anticipated such a meteoric rise for the 22-year-old. Coming off a stop-start stint in the Bundesliga, there were genuine concerns around his readiness for the intensity and tactical precision required at Liverpool. But Slot clearly saw something others did not. Advertisement 'In terms of where he came from and my expectations of him, I mean who saw this coming?' Lynch added. 'That he would become one of the best holding midfielders in the league, he's a duel winner but also has the quality with his feet and the way he moves the ball.' Gravenberch's versatility has been a revelation. Operating primarily as a holding midfielder, he has been a consistent presence in Liverpool's engine room, breaking up opposition attacks and seamlessly transitioning into attacking phases. His balance of composure and aggression has been key to Liverpool's relentless pressing game and quick transitions. Key to Slot's Title-Winning System Arne Slot's first year at Anfield has been one of evolution and intensity. Taking over from Jürgen Klopp was never going to be simple, but Slot has stamped his authority with tactical clarity and a rejuvenated squad spirit. Central to that transformation has been Gravenberch, whose performances have helped redefine Liverpool's midfield identity. Advertisement His ability to shield the back four while offering creative distribution from deep has allowed more freedom for advanced players like Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister. Gravenberch's contribution was never about flashy moments, but about consistency, intelligence and resilience. Photo: IMAGO 'It was a hugely impressive season from him – absolutely magnificent,' Lynch noted, a sentiment echoed widely across the Liverpool fanbase and beyond. Future Brimming With Promise Gravenberch's development under Slot suggests that this is just the beginning. At only 22, he already displays the maturity of a seasoned professional. His positional awareness, strength in duels and ball control suggest a ceiling far higher than many originally imagined. Advertisement 'He's only going to get better too so I can't wait to watch him again next season,' said Lynch, and it's hard to argue with that. Gravenberch is no longer just a promising talent. He is now a key pillar in a title-winning Liverpool side. As pre-season looms, Liverpool fans will be eager to see how Slot continues to refine his tactical blueprint, and there's no doubt that Gravenberch will be central to it. With Champions League football returning to Anfield and expectations sky-high, the Dutchman's role will only become more critical. For a player who arrived in the shadows of uncertainty, Ryan Gravenberch now finds himself basking in the glow of admiration. And rightly so.

Liverpool dealt early blow for title defence next season with key player set to miss MULTIPLE games after summer break

Liverpool will begin their Premier League title defence without one important star after he picked up a suspension on the final day of the season. The Reds lifted their second Premier League title after a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace at Anfield, waving goodbye to Trent Alexander-Arnold. It was far from a vintage performance, but Mohamed Salah got back on the scoresheet and the home crowd were in high spirits. However, one player has made the start of the next campaign slightly harder after picking up a straight red card. Ryan Gravenberch was handed a red for fouling Daichi Kamada on the halfway line to stop a counter-attack. The Liverpool midfielder was the last man and stopped Kamada in his tracks with a high challenge after 68 minutes. He had already been on a yellow for simulation but, after being handed a straight red, is set to miss the first three games of next season. That will exclude the Community Shield, Mail Sport understands, and will therefore impact the first three games of their title defence. This was Gravenberch's first sending-off in the Premier League. The 23-year-old has enjoyed an improved campaign at Anfield which has seen him become a midfield fulcrum for Arne Slot, playing all bar one of the side's Premier League games. Liverpool do not yet know who their first few opponents will be as the Premier League 2025-26 fixtures will only be released on June 18. Gravenberch is likely to return to a changed Liverpool side after Slot hinted that the Reds will have a 'big summer'. The manager said: 'It would be weird if I played completely differently because we have just won the league, but we have to adapt. 'You always have to try to become better. We have to improve with these players and if there is a possibility to strengthen with the other players too. Next season the competition will be better as well.'

Jeremie Frimpong shows true colours with message to future Liverpool team-mate

Jeremie Frimpong has endeared himself to Liverpool supporters with a message to future Anfield team-mate Ryan Gravenberch. Frimpong, 24, is set to join the Reds from Bayer Leverkusen when the summer transfer window opens on June 1. Liverpool have informed the Bundesliga club that they're ready to pay the Dutch right-back's £29.5million release clause after agreeing terms on a five-year contract. Frimpong has been a key part of Xabi Alonso's Leverkusen side, helping them to a league and cup double in Germany last season. The Netherlands international will know a few familiar faces when he arrives on Merseyside, namely Dutch compatriots Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Gravenberch. It's the latter who the Frimpong sent a message to on social media after the Liverpool midfielder was voted the Premier League's young player of the season. Showing his support for Gravenberch, the 24-year-old joined Van Dijk and Gakpo in the comments by replying: "Ryan laaa," alongside a emojis of a red heart and a trophy. Earlier this week, Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes strongly suggested that Frimpong, who they signed from Celtic in 2021, was Liverpool-bound. "It's no secret that he has a prospect clause and there's interest, perhaps from England, perhaps even from Liverpool," Rolfes hinted to BILD. "We'll see what happens. It's quite possible that Jerry will leave in the summer. Even then, it's not final. "But I'm already informed about things, we're all informed, so it could happen - let's wait and see." Liverpool manager Arne Slot has been more tight-lipped. Asked if he could confirm whether Frimpong had undergone a medical following Monday's 3-2 loss away to Brighton, Slot replied: "What do you think? "I think what we all know is the moment we announce it, that is the moment to talk about it in general. We haven't announced anything so no need to talk about anyone." Alonso has already told Liverpool what they'll be getting with Frimpong, praising the defender last season. "Since I got here for the first time, since the first day, Jeremie has been a key player for us and for myself," former Liverpool star Alonso hailed. "His personality - he brings a lot of joy to the locker room. So you need to keep him having this joy. But as well as become more mature."
