Liverpool star Ryan Gravenberch makes alarming admission over transfer - 'I was going crazy'
Liverpool star Ryan Gravenberch has revealed how joining the Reds stopped him from 'going crazy.'
The 23-year-old Dutch international has admitted that he started to come off the rails mentally after a dream move to Bayern Munich turned into a nightmare under coach Julian Nagelsmann.
Gravenberch's father believes his son was close to depression before he was rescued from his demons by a £34million move to Anfield two years ago.
The midfielder had a stellar campaign under Arne Slot last season as Liverpool were crowned Premier League champions. And only now has he lifted the lid on the year from hell which saw him start just three Bundesliga games after joining Bayern from Ajax.
Gravenberch said: 'I was going crazy in my head. I was lucky my parents had moved to Munich for me. I don't know what would have happened if I had been out there just on my own…it was really tough mentally.
'I was happy we were champions, but my contribution was small. I know we stood there as champions but I did not feel like a champion at all. It was a totally different feeling from all the other times I won trophies.
'Under Nagelsmann, I would go three matches in a row spending 90 minutes watching my team. That is when I started to go crazy in my head. In the winter I was totally done with it. During the last two months of the season under (Thomas) Tuchel, I got more minutes than in the entire period before.
'I remember how I felt at Bayern, but I know I have managed to climb out of that low. And that is what I am proud of.'
Gravenberch's father, also called Ryan, believes his son would have been left battling a bout of depression if he had been alone in Munich. 'I think if we had not been there with him, he would have landed in a depression,' Gravenberch senior told Dutch magazine Helden.
'When you say something like that as a parent, people might think 'oh dear, here is another father who thinks his son is so brilliant.' But the football world is hard - and people in that world are too. A lot was said about him, but people forgot this was a young boy of 21.
'The whole Bayern Munich adventure never worked out like he expected. He was working really hard, but he was never given a chance to shine.
'At that time, we could not dream that he would get a transfer to Liverpool and that Arne Slot would become his coach. When I look at what has happened to him with Slot and Liverpool I have to say in all honesty that he has gone from hell to heaven!'

According to The Athletic's David Ornstein, who appeared on The Sports Agents podcast, a number of United players have been in contact with Baleba and 'explained the club's project' to the midfielder. 'Brighton, understandably, won't be happy about that,' he added. 'They'll see this as an attempt to unsettle their player.' At a fan forum last week, Brighton CEO Paul Barber insisted he had not spoken to United over Baleba, but was unable to provide any assurances over the midfielder's future. 'There's always going to be interest in our players,' he said. 'Manchester United have not been in touch with me. 'Speculation is speculation. Carlos is a fantastic talent. We hope he'll be here for years to come – but its subject to the dynamics of the football world, which isn't always predictable.' Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler, meanwhile, has said he is 'not afraid' of losing key players to bigger clubs during transfer windows. The Seagulls have sanctioned the departure of a number of senior players in recent years, most recently selling Joao Pedro to Chelsea. 'No chance. I don't feel fear,' Hurzeler told the Monday Night Club when asked if he worries about having to sell key members of his squad. 'I'm not afraid of anything because the only thing we can do is be the best version we can be every day, like work as hard as we can. 'All the other things we can't influence, so we really have to focus on us. For sure, we can't spend the money like the big teams but one of our biggest values is togetherness. 'And if you stay together, if we try to push our limits and increase the boundaries, then I'm sure we can compete with the big teams.' Baleba's form at Brighton has attracted interest from Manchester City as well as Manchester United. Joining the recent Premier League champions would likely be a tempting proposition but Wes Brown says Baleba should snub Man City for his beloved United. Liverpool in talks with Crystal Palace over move for Marc Guehi
Arne Slot's Reds have been busy since winning last season's Premier League, with Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Hugo Ekitike and Milos Kerkez among the summer arrivals. Premier League matches to be preceded by silence in memory of Diogo Jota
The league has spoken to Liverpool about the most appropriate way to remember the Portuguese star, who was killed in a car crash alongside his brother on July 3 in Spain. As well as a period of silence prior to kick-off in the matches, players of all clubs will be given black armbands while messaging and imagery will be shared with clubs for them to use on big screens. Tributes were paid to the brothers prior to last Sunday's Community Shield between Liverpool and Crystal Palace at Wembley, with wreaths laid on the pitch and a period of silence before kick-off. 'He was just still happy and tried to cheer for his team. 'They tried to calm him down, but that was a bit noisy as well. And then our fans reacted, 'Hey, what's happening here?'. The club's record goalscorer Ian Rush, Palace chairman Steve Parish and Football Association chair Debbie Hewitt laid the wreaths in the Liverpool end as fans from both sides showed their respect with a standing ovation as the siblings' images were displayed on the big screens inside the stadium. Liverpool have retired Jota's number 20 shirt in tribute to the player.
