As last season started to wind down, the team's efforts slowly declined, which was inherently linked in part to Gravenberch's fitness issues, alongside the Premier League title nearing ever closer.
🔴
Wataru Endo and Alexis Mac Allister have attempted to play as the team's deepest-lying midfielder before and neither have been as successful as Gravenberch, although in Sunday's Community Shield loss, we got a glimpse of someone who delivered our best effort yet at covering the Dutchman.
Jones as the Zubimendi replacement?
Before the Spaniard joined Arsenal this summer, Martin Zubimendi was a highly-regarded figure on Merseyside and we all hoped he'd become our defensive midfielder, before we looked internally.
Of course, that didn't work out and fortunately Gravenberch was able to step up to the plate, although no one could do what he could do - we still needed a Zubimendi-type player in the team.
As mentioned, many have tried and failed to meet the heights of the Gravenberch, although in the loss to Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon, Curtis Jones came pretty close with his latest effort.
In a 71 minute performance, he completed all 58 of his passes, made three accurate long-balls (100%), won three of his six duels and made an interception. It was an all-round masterclass.

The barefoot water skier with big medal hopes in European Championships
TOM Heaps is flying the flag for Warrington and aiming to spark up the European Barefoot Waterski Championships this week. The 26-year-old electrician from Grappenhall Heys goes into the event in Chartres, France, with high medal hopes for Great Britain based on his past record. Heaps, who trains at Weaver Sailing & Ski Club in Frodsham, has won multiple medals and titles at world and European championships, including silver in the jump event at the former last year. At the 2024 Europeans, he won four medals including a gold and heads to France as the 2025 open men's British champion in slalom, jump and overall as well as the silver medallist in tricks. He is a former junior boys' world champion and world record holder in barefoot jump. The former Bridgewater High School student will be one of 10 athletes representing GB from tomorrow until Saturday. Barefoot water skiing at competitive level is not for the faint-hearted. As the name suggests, the competitors do not use skis but only their bare feet on the water. They are towed by a boat which generally travels faster than for other water ski disciplines, reaching speeds of up to 45mph. Like regular – or classic - water skiing, barefooters compete in the three events of slalom (crossing the boat's wakes from one side to the other repeatedly), tricks and jump. In jump, the skier goes over a ramp in a superman pose and has to land and ski away. All that matters in jump is the distance achieved. Medals are awarded in each individual event.

Journalist – Newcastle complete £35m transfer for AC Milan's Malick Thiaw
Newcastle secure £35m Malick Thiaw signing from AC Milan Malick Thiaw set for Premier League move Newcastle United have reached an agreement with AC Milan for the signing of Germany international Malick Thiaw in a deal understood to be worth around £35 million. The 24-year-old defender arrived in the north-east of England on Sunday evening and began his medical examinations on Monday morning, marking the final stages of a transfer pursued over several months. Before departing Italy, Thiaw spoke briefly to reporters, stating: 'Newcastle? I am happy with the choice. I'm ready for the Premier League.' The Magpies' hierarchy had long identified the right-sided centre-back position as a priority, with Thiaw emerging as the leading target following his strong performances in Serie A and Europe. Standing at 6ft 4in, the versatile defender is also capable of playing at right-back or stepping into a defensive midfield role, offering tactical flexibility to Eddie Howe's squad. AC Milan reluctant but Thiaw eager While AC Milan were initially reluctant to part with the defender, Thiaw made it clear he was eager for the opportunity to play in the Premier League. That determination proved decisive, with the Italian club eventually agreeing terms after extensive negotiations. His arrival is expected to provide strong competition for Fabian Schär, as Newcastle seek to solidify their defensive options ahead of a challenging campaign. With Thiaw's signing now in motion, Newcastle have effectively ended their interest in Crystal Palace's Marc Guéhi, who had been monitored closely in recent months. Striker search intensifies Attention now shifts towards reinforcing the attacking department, with the situation surrounding Alexander Isak continuing to cause uncertainty. The Sweden forward has made clear his desire to move to Liverpool, and is currently training away from the main group. Howe has reiterated that he wants only players fully committed to Newcastle, and Isak is not expected to feature in the weekend fixture against Aston Villa. As a result, Newcastle are advancing talks with Brentford over a deal for Yoane Wissa, with a transfer anticipated to be finalised this week. The 28-year-old's adaptability across the front line has made him a valued target. Porto striker monitored Newcastle have also enquired about Porto forward Samu Aghehowa. The 21-year-old enjoyed a prolific campaign last season, registering 27 goals in 45 appearances. However, his reported €100m (£86.6m) release clause presents a significant obstacle, with Newcastle weighing whether to make a formal bid. The club's activity in both defensive and attacking markets underlines a determination to strengthen key areas, ensuring squad depth and competition across all positions ahead of a busy season domestically and in Europe.

Fulham reject €40m offer from Atalanta for Leeds United target Rodrigo Muniz
Fulham have rejected a €40 million bid from Atalanta for Leeds United target Rodrigo Muniz, according to Sky Sports Switzerland journalist Sacha Tavolieri. Leeds manager Daniel Farke wants a new striker at the Elland Road club after telling Patrick Bamford to leave, and the Brazilian has emerged as his target. Fulham want €50m for his services, but the Whites may need to look elsewhere even if they can afford to meet their demands. Muniz is determined to join Atalanta and has told the Craven Cottage club of his transfer desire. Journalist and transfer insider Ben Jacobs claimed on Monday that Muniz remains Leeds' top striker target and they have not given up. Former Everton star Dominic Calvert-Lewin is another name the West Yorkshire club have discussed if signing Muniz does not work. They may now need to go for the Englishman if the claim from Tavolieri this afternoon is anything to go by. Leeds want Premier League quality as they look to recruit a quality number 9, and the Fulham star has proven himself. Sadly for them, it appears a move to where Champions League football is available appeals more to him, and Leeds have been here before. Brazilian winger Igor Paixao also opted to join Marseille ahead of the Whites from Feyenoord due to the opportunity to play in the elite European competition at the Ligue 1 club. Leeds had received emails from the Eredivisie club and the representatives of the attacker which suggested that respective terms had been agreed. However, he opted for Marseille and Muniz is now expected to turn them down for the same reason. Other striking options are on their wishlist and the Whites have three weeks to get a deal done for a new number 9 if they want to hit the ground running on their Premier League return.
