Kuala Lumpur: Footballers must not think they have 'made it' after they break into their club's senior team, says Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs, the most-decorated player in English football. Footballers should never sit back after making their senior debut. There is always something for them to improve on and better themselves, he said.
Advertisement 'Not only is it hard enough coming up against the opposition but also you have young players wanting your place, coming up behind you, like I was, hungry to get into the team. 'So you can't stand still and you always have to improve,' he said in an interview with FMT. 'Never in my whole career, even in my 30s, did I ever think that I'd made it. I always thought that there was something that I could learn in training, something that I could learn in the games.' Considered one of the best wingers in football, Giggs made his senior debut with United in 1991 and made a club record of 963 appearances before retiring in 2014.
Advertisement He is currently in Malaysia to promote a match between United and the Asean All Stars for the Maybank Challenge Cup 2025 on May 28 at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil. Asked about the necessary qualities needed to be part of United's senior squad and remaining in it, he said breaking into United's first XI was easy but keeping one's place was difficult. Certain qualities were needed: hard work, personality, confidence, and also a willingness to keep improving, he said. Free flowing football Giggs said he is not a fan of the systematic approach to football, in which players take fewer risks. Such an approach sees players constantly keeping the ball and not going anywhere, or seeing a winger passing back when facing their opponent, he said. While a systematic approach meant it was much harder to break down the opposing team's defence, Giggs said 'that's just not my game.' 'I was always brought up with (the philosophy of) taking the defender on 10 times. You might get tackled nine times, but you'll win the game at the 10th attempt. And that was always my mentality.' FIFA president Gianni Infantino had recently suggested that Ronaldo could move to a side qualified for the upcoming Club World Cup. Ronaldo on Saturday confirmed talks but said he won't be at the tournament in the United States. On Sunday, Portugal beat Spain 5-3 on penalties to give Ronaldo and his team a third trophy, the others being at Euro 2016 and the 2019 Nations League. "I have many titles but there is nothing better than winning with the national team," the five-time Ballon d'Or winner said. Ronaldo scored the 2-2 equaliser in the 61st minute, which eventually set up the shoot-out, but came off in the 88th with an apparent thigh problem. He had also scored the 2-1 winner in Wednesday's semi-final. The two goals against Germany and Spain brought his tally to 138, from 221 caps, which are both world records in the men's game. Cklamovski and team shut out external distractions to deliver on the field
KUALA LUMPUR: There are negative vibes outside the walls of the national team camp but inside, head coach Peter Cklamovski is instilling positivity. As Malaysia gear up for their pivotal clash against Vietnam in the 2027 Asian Cup third-round qualifiers at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil today, the Australian coach sent out a strong message – they will continue to focus on rebuilding. He said the outside noise in regards to the mixed-heritage call-up and eligibility issues won't derail what is being built from within, which is unity and an ambition that is tied deeply to a long-term vision. "All these don't distract us internally. We've had a good preparation and we're ready to come out at the stadium and do the country proud," said Cklamovski. "We've got new players from abroad - Malaysians who are proud every time they wear the jersey and train. We're building a family atmosphere, and we'll show that tomorrow night." While critics and pundits have been fixated on naturalised players and perceived divides, Cklamovski insists the squad are only focused on progression, unity, and delivering for the fans, especially with the strategic backing of Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim. "This isn't about one game, it's about changing mindsets and rewriting Malaysia's football story," said Cklamovski. "We are building a long-term legacy. We've rotated all 30 players to assess and build chemistry. Every one of them knows what is expected." One of the standout additions has been Facundo Garces, a towering centreback who plays in Spain's La Liga and now dons the Malaysian colours. "Facundo is a high-level player. He brings elite standards and a mentality of never wasting a second. Some players have sacrificed a lot to be here, and he's connected with the team so well. That rubs off on others." The 28-year-old will be one of Vietnam's solid star defenders when they face off with Malaysia in the 2027 Asian Cup third-round qualifier today. Duy Manh was at the same venue two weeks ago when the Asean All-Stars took on Manchester United in the Maybank Challenge Cup, which they eventually won. "This is the most important game in this qualifying campaign," said Duy Manh. "It's an away game, so it will be difficult, but we have prepared well. We trust coach Kim (Sang-sik) and we'll follow his instructions." Duy Manh has also played here during the 2018 AFF Cup final and knows what to expect from the team and fans. "It's a big stadium, always full, and we know how the atmosphere will be. This is Malaysia's favourite ground. But for 90 minutes, we will remain focused and overcome the pressure." With everything on the line, Vietnam are approaching the battle with caution, clarity and quiet confidence.
