Triple J Hottest 100: Never Tear Us Apart by INXS voted best Australian song ever
The 1987 song topped the Hottest 100 of Australian Songs, a spin-off of Triple J's annual poll of the year's most popular tracks. The poll, which aired on Saturday, was open to Australian releases from any time in history.
Never Tear Us Apart was a global hit for INXS, charting in the US, UK and Europe as well as at home in Australia. The ballad, written by the band's frontman, Michael Hutchence, for his then-girlfriend, reigns in a crowded discography as the group's most unforgettable anthem, made wondrous by Hutchence's desperate, stirring vocals. INXS also had their track Need You Tonight feature in Saturday's poll, at No 59.
The Hilltop Hoods came second in the poll with their 2013 single The Nosebleed Section. The hip-hop track was a ten times platinum-selling hit in Australia and is still one of the highest-selling homegrown singles of all time.
The top five was rounded out by The Veronica's Untouched in third, Missy Higgins' breakthrough hit Scar in fourth and Crowded House's Don't Dream It's Over in fifth. The latter was one of three appearances in the poll from the band, which formed in Melbourne but whose frontman, Neil Finn, was born and raised in New Zealand, a heritage that has sparked a decades-long debate about which country gets to claim the rock group.
While the top ten spanned tracks from the 1970s, 80s and 90s, the 2000s had more songs overall in the poll than any other decade. The top ten also included two tracks from Cold Chisel – Flame Trees and Khe Sanh – as well as Powderfinger's My Happiness, Paul Kelly's Christmas classic, How To Make Gravy, and Gotye and Kimbra's chart-topping collaboration Somebody That I Used to Know.
Double J announced The Hottest 100 of Australian songs in the wake of January's Hottest 100, which featured just 29 songs from Australian acts. That's a poor showing compared with previous years, when homegrown acts have typically made up more than 50% of the songs in the countdown – and an uncomfortable result for a station that is government-mandated to support Australian music.
Lachlan Macara, the head of Triple J, promised at the time that the station had 'some big things cooking on how we can remind people about the unique cultural worth of Australian music'. He attributed the 2025 poll's lack of local acts in part to a changing music industry, in which social media and streaming platforms are increasingly important for music discovery, but can be tough to crack.
'What I hear from Australian artists is that it can be a real challenge to cut through the algorithm,' he said. 'But we'll keep playing our part in supporting Australian artists and try to give them a chance to reach the wide audiences they deserve … I think there's a chance to have a wider conversation about how we can all support Australian music.'
The Hottest 100 of Australian Songs has proven a big success for the station. Triple J counted more than 2.65m votes for the poll, more than any of the last four years of the annual song poll received. According to Triple J, it is the fourth-biggest Hottest 100 they have run. While it was a social media hit with millennial and Gen X Australians – with many posting their votes on Instagram – Double J revealed that 18 to 29-year-olds were still the most popular voters.
One Australian artist not placated by the special edition poll was Ben Lee, who posted on Instagram that every year of the Hottest 100 should be local-only.
'I can't help but feel that this initiative — the Hottest 100 of Australian songs — is a bit of a band-aid for a deeper conversation we need to be having about what role Triple J need to be playing in Australian music culture, and fostering new Australian talent,' he said in a video post.
'I reckon in the Hottest 100 every year, it should only be eligible to vote for Australian songs. There's enough platforms around the world for international music.'
Lee's 1999 track Cigarettes Will Kill You placed at No 83 in Saturday's poll.
One of the many Australians to publicly reveal their votes was the country's prime minister, Anthony Albanese, whose list included Midnight Oil's Beds Are Burning, a 1986 protest track about Aboriginal land rights, and songs from Spiderbait, You Am I and The Go-Betweens.
Albanese should be pleased to hear that Beds Are Burning landed at No 18. How To Make Gravy was also among his picks, while another of his favourite tracks, The Angels' Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again, placed at No 12.

Shopper in tears over Bunnings employee's unexpected act: 'Are you joking?'
Christian Hull has been brought to tears by a Bunnings employee's random act of kindness during a recent store visit. The Aussie podcast host was trying to get his hands on the sought-after Bride and Groom gnomes from the popular children's TV series Bluey. One of the workers at the store informed Christian that most of the popular $19 gnomes were already sold out but suggested he check the range in aisles 13 and 14. However, the two gnomes he wanted were nowhere to be found. 'Are there any secretly out the back?' Christian cheekily asked. In an unexpected move, employee Alicia told the comedian she had set aside the Bride and Groom gnomes for him, knowing he had been looking for the pair. 'Did you actually?' Christian said in disbelief. The worker, who's among Christian's 1.9 million followers on TikTok, decided to put the gnomes on hold for him after seeing his plea on social media. 'Are you joking?' he said. 'Oh my god, I'm gonna cry with absolute joy and happiness.' Christian burst into tears as the employee returned with the gnomes. Filled with emotion, he then started hiding his face under his hand, laughing hysterically as he realised: 'I'm a grown man.' 'Oh my god,' he added. The shopper said he couldn't believe his luck. 'I legitimately thought I was going to come in here, and they'd be all gone,' he said. 'But thank you to Alicia from Bunnings, who I'm campaigning for a pay rise.' 'Oh my god, I secured the gnomes I have the husbands and a wife,' he said. 'I repeat, I have husbands and a wife. How the f*** did I manage that? Well we all know how - it was Alicia. She was the absolute best human ever.' Sitting in his car in the Bunnings carpark, Christian said: 'Genuinely, hand on heart, (I thought I) was going to film my disappointment.' The shopper joked he had 'slept through' the 'buying craze' on launch day so he thought he'd 'miss out yet again' on the wildly popular Bluey gnomes. However, he thanked the employee for her kind gesture after she helped him secure the two gnomes he needed for his collection. 'What a rollercoaster,' he said. His video has been viewed more than 640,000 times - with many saying they were delighted to see the Bunnings employee going above and beyond for Christian. 'I love this for you. As a fellow Bunnings gal Alicia is a SLAY for doing this,' one said. 'This is so beautiful. I used to work in retail and had a few special customers I would keep certain items for that I knew they'd like. This is what exceptional customer service looks like, going above and beyond,' another shared. 'Alicia. What a legend,' one suggested. 'Alicia is the real MVP,' another added. The Bluey gnomes have been flying off shelves across Australia in recent weeks - just a year after they sold out in just hours.

Fitzy and Wippa reveal the rudest celebrities they've ever interviewed
Michael 'Wippa' Wipfli and Ryan 'Fitzy' Fitzgerald have opened up about their most challenging celebrity interviews. The Nova breakfast presenters were discussing their worst celebrity interviews on Thursday morning when Wippa, 45, said the one he did with English singer Taio Cruz was particularly memorable - for all the wrong reasons. 'A one-hit wonder... the producer introduced him as Tayo and he said, "It's Taio mate,"' Wippa began. Show producer Tom then said that Taio only gave 'one word answers', which prompted Wippa to admit he was so unimpressed by him that he refused a photo request. 'At the end of the interview, he wound it up quite quickly, and his publicity guy said, "an you guys get a photo" and we went, 'Nah,"' Wippa said. He added he was also not thrilled by Taio's refusal to take his sunglasses off in the studio. Fitzy then revealed his own bad interview experience, admitting he had a particularly bad chat with James Bond star Daniel Craig. 'Have you got the Daniel Craig audio there when Wippa interviewed him for James Bond? When he said he'd rather suck pus out of an abscess?' Fitzy asked. Craig's comments refer to an Australian interview he conducted in 2012, to promote his movie Skyfall, in which he was asked to demonstrate some of the 'moves' he learned for the role - to which he sniped he would rather suck pus. 'I reckon that was on a Saturday as well. On my weekend, I went to sit down with Daniel Craig and the annoying thing is, Craig thought he was James Bond in the interview,' Wippa chipped in. 'Like it's okay. You're an actor. You're playing a role Daniel!' 'Not really a friendly guy the old Craig of Daniel... man with two first names!' Fitzy added. This is not the first time Fitzy and Wippa have had a particularly awkward celebrity encounter. In 2022, Fitzy revealed on air how Denzel Washington once refused to take a photo with him. 'We were at a restaurant overseas one time and Denzel Washington turned up to the restaurant. And then there was the guy who ran the restaurant, and I started to make my way over to get a photo with Denzel,' he explained. 'Now, the guy who ran the restaurant was like the middleman. So he jumped in right. And I'm asking Denzel "photo?" He jumps in, looks at Denzel. Denzel shakes his head as if to say no, the guy then looks at me and goes "No".' Earlier this year, Wippa was left red-faced when British actor Leo Woodhall snapped at him during an interview after the Nova radio star asked him about his love life. The breakfast host was chatting to Leo and his Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy co-star, Renee Zellweger, about their new movie - and the subject quickly turned to their personal lives. Leo is currently in a relationship with his White Lotus co-star Meghann Fahy and is notoriously private about their romance. 'Leo, are you in love at the moment?' Wippa asked. 'That's none of your business!' Leo snapped back.
