GE2025: 'We will learn the right lessons and do better,' says NTUC chief Ng Chee Meng on Allianz-Income deal, Singapore News

Jalan Kayu SMC People's Action Party (PAP) candidate Ng Chee Meng has said that he will learn from the feedback from the Allianz-Income saga and do better.
He addressed the matter during the party's rally at Fern Green Primary School on Sunday (April 27) evening.
Ng said that in the course of his work in NTUC Enterprise, problems do occasionally rear their heads at them, such as the Income-Allianz deal.
"The proposed deal was done in good faith and was in compliance with legal and MAS (Monetary Authority of Singapore) regulations," he recalled in his speech. "We thought in the labour movement that it was a reasonable deal."
Ng explained that at the time, Income's market share in Singapore had dropped from 20 per cent to six per cent over 10 years, and there was a "real threat to the sustainability of Income, especially in moments of crisis".
"The proposed deal could strengthen Income and, most importantly, protect the interests of Incomes policy holders," he said, adding that a stronger Income would enable NTUC to pursue social missions in wider spaces besides insurance.
But as details of the proposed plan surfaced, Ng said, the "government saw it differently and stopped it by changing the law".
"NTUC could not have known that the law would be changed," he added.
Stating that he sincerely respected the government's view and accepted them blocking the deal, he also acknowledged the public feedback received.
"I've initiated a review in NTUC Enterprise so that we can learn the right lessons humbly, do better for fellow Singaporeans," he said.
"In NTUC, we will do our best, and sometimes I'm sorry that it is not good enough. But we will learn the right lessons, and we will do better," he affirmed.
Former NTUC Income Insurance chief executive Tan Suee Chieh and Straits Trades executive director David Leong had each called for accountability from Ng for supporting the Income-Allianz deal in separate Facebook posts on Sunday.
Ng, who is also the secretary-general of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), was accompanied by the PAP's Ang Mo Kio GRC candidates Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, incumbent MPs Darryl David and Nadia Ahmad Samdin, as well as new faces Jasmin Lau and Victor Lye.
Sengkang GRC candidate Dr Lam Pin Min, NTUC vice-president Abdul Samad Abdul Wahab, Kebun Baru SMC candidate Henry Kwek and Yio Chu Kang SMC Yip Hon Weng were also present. Government originally supported deal: SM Lee
SM Lee also spoke at the rally and addressed the aborted deal as a "serious matter".
The labour movement felt it was a reasonable deal, and we supported it, he recalled, adding that the government looked at the deal and had determined that it met all legal requirements and MAS regulations.
"But after the issue was discussed further and we went further into the matter, the government found out more things and decided, no, we have to change our mind," SM Lee said.
"We have to say we oppose this deal. But we have to change legislation, change the law, so that we can block it."
He then highlighted that this showed how the PAP is accountable to Singapore for doing the right thing, whereas the Workers' Party (WP) "had nothing to do with this".
He elaborated: "When we went for the legislation, Workers' Party abstained. So if it had been left to the Workers' Party as government, then the deal would have gone through because they did not oppose it."
At a WP rally in Tampines on Saturday, party chief Pritam Singh said that the "Workers' Party MPs promptly filed questions to call on the government" about the deal.
"Not a single PAP labour MP asked a question about this issue in Parliament," he added.
Earlier in his speech, SM Lee also commended Ng's character for having "the grit" and "the sense of responsibility" to stand by his post during the Covid-19 pandemic despite losing his seat in GE2020.
"He proved himself, reliable, trustworthy, committed," SM Lee said. "Therefore, this election... I recommended to the PM, and the PM agreed and invited Ng Chee Meng to stand again." Allianz-Income deal
German insurer Allianz had offered $2.2 billion in cash for at least 51 per cent of shares for Income Insurance in July last year.
The government intervened in October, calling off the deal as it decided it would not be in the public interest.
Two months later, Allianz pulled out of the deal.

Second round of Pofma sanctions for owner of The Online Citizen's website, social media accounts

This is the second time that The Online Citizen has been slapped with the declaration, with its first due to expire in July 2025. PHOTO: THE ONLINE CITIZEN/FACEBOOK Second round of Pofma sanctions for owner of The Online Citizen's website, social media accounts SINGAPORE – The people running The Online Citizen's (TOC) website, Facebook, Instagram, and X pages will continue to be barred from deriving any financial benefits from the running of its platforms till 2027. In a statement on June 11 , the Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI) said TOC's website and social media pages – which were labelled as Declared Online Locations (DOLs) – had first been declared as such in July 2023, and were due to expire on July 21, 2025. DOLs have to comply with actions under the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (Pofma) that would prevent their operator from financially benefiting during the period they are listed as one. However, said MDDI, TOC 'continued to communicate falsehoods through its online platforms over the past two years'. Between July 2023 and June 2025 , it received eigh t correction directions under the fake news law . These included one in Feb 25, after TOC published an article about modification works at the Ridout Road colonial bungalow leased by Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam's wife. In its article, it said the Singapore Land Authorit y had given Mr Shanmugam assurances of a lease extension beyond its 2027 expiry, and that public funds were used to pay for the earthworks carried out at the bungalow since 2024, among other claims. These are falsehoods, said MDDI. As a result, TOC's website and social media pages have again been labelled DOLs, a move necessary 'to ensure Singaporeans continue to be alerted to TOC's record of communicating falsehoods', said the ministry. The new declaration comes into effect immediately after the current direction expires and will remain till July 21, 2027 at 12p m. TOC will be able to continue its operations, but will have to carry a notice on its online platforms to notify its audience that it has been declared a DOL. The notice will also have to state that it had 'communicated multiple falsehoods' and that its viewers should exercise caution when accessing it for information. MDDI added that service providers, including digital advertising agencies, will have to take steps to ensure that their paid content on TOC's platforms are not made available in Singapore. 'Individuals and companies must also not provide financial support to TOC's DOLs to avoid promoting the communication of falsehoods in Singapore on these platforms,' it added. At present, there are three other outlets currently listed as DOLs. They are Transformative Justice Collective's website and social media pages, Gutzy Asia's website and social media pages, as well as opposition politician Kenneth Jeyaretnam's website and social media pages. A provision under Pofma allows the Government to order an internet intermediary to disable access to a DOL if the owner of the DOL does not comply with the declaration and paid content on the site continues to be displayed to users here. If an internet intermediary fails to comply and is convicted, it can be fined up to $20,000 for each day that the government order is not fully complied with, up to a total o f $500,000 . The owner or operator of a DOL can however apply to the Minister for Digital Development and Information to suspend, vary, or cancel the declaration. If the minister refuses the application, an appeal can be made to the High Court. Aqil Hamzah is a journalist covering breaking news at The Straits Times, with interests in crime and technology. NTUC exploring options to match retrenched Jetstar Asia staff to roles at SIA Group

NTUC is exploring possible opportunities to match retrenched Jetstar Asia employees, including crew and corporate staff, to suitable roles with the Singapore Airlines Group, said labour chief Ng Chee Meng. Over 500 employees from Jetstar Asia will be retrenched following the closure of the Singapore-based low-cost airline on July 31. In a Facebook post on June 11, Mr Ng said that the NTUC Aerospace and Aviation Cluster will work with Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore and Changi Airport Group to identify opportunities for the affected employees as well. He said: "The news of Jetstar Asia's closure is a hit for the many employees of the airline. They have contributed much to the airline over the years." He added that the NTUC and Singapore Manual & Mercantile Workers' Union (SMMWU) were informed of the retrenchments in advance, and SMMWU has been working closely with Jetstar Asia to support the workers. The retrenchment benefits provided are in line with the Tripartite Advisory on Managing Excess Manpower and Responsible Retrenchment, but support goes beyond just financial compensation, Mr Ng added. Starting next week, NTUC and NTUC's Employment and Employability Institute will be on-site at Changi Airport Terminal 1 to provide direct support, including career coaching, skills upgrading, and employability assistance, he said. In a statement on June 11, Jetstar Asia said it will support workers with retrenchment packages, employment support, or provide them with other opportunities within the Qantas group or with other airlines and aviation companies in Singapore. The airline's closure is part of a "strategic restructure" by its parent company, Australian flag carrier Qantas. Retrenched employees will receive a redundancy payment of four weeks per year of service, a bonus for this financial year, a special 'thank you' payment as well as other benefits. In a separate statement, the Singapore Manual & Mercantile Workers' Union (SMMWU) said it has worked closely with management and negotiated with the company to ensure that affected members and workers receive fair compensation. SMMWU is affiliated with the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC). Jetstar Asia has been unionised since 2009. An inter-agency task force on retrenchment said in a separate statement that it is working closely with Jetstar and the SMMWU to support the affected workers. Called the Taskforce for Responsible Retrenchment and Employment Facilitation, it comprises the Ministry of Manpower, Workforce Singapore, the NTUC and the NTUC's Employment and Employability Institute. "Our priority is to help the affected employees with employment facilitation, said the taskforce in a statement.
