Gemini Lands On Google Nest Smart Speakers

Google's AI charge has stepped up a notch, with users on Reddit suggesting that Gemini has hit their Nest smart speakers.
According to a report on 9t05Google, some users - who state that they are enrolled in the Google Home Public Preview program - have spotted a new visual twist when interacting with their Nest Audio speakers: the familiar four-light animation has swapped its usual white tones for Gemini's signature blue and purple glow.
The update, according to the report and user submissions on Reddit, seems to appear only if you've got 'Experimental AI features' enabled, and only on devices running Cast firmware version 3.75.468348.
So far, this color makeover hasn't shown up on the 2nd-gen Nest Mini, which is also eligible for the preview.
There's no sign yet that Nest Hubs have joined the Gemini experiment yet, but it's seemingly only a matter of time, especially with Google already testing a Gemini-powered Google TV experience.
Last year, Google told us that it would use Gemini models to power a more advanced Assistant, but still kept the old Google Assistant name for smart home devices.
However, in March, Google confirmed that the Assistant would be phased out in favor of Gemini.
Millions of users have already made the change on newer Android smartphones but, beyond mobile, Google also announced that it was expanding Gemini's reach to other device types that had previously relied on the Google Assistant, such as tablets, cars, headphones, smartwatches, speakers, smart displays, and TVs.
Unifying everything under Gemini makes sense as Google pushes AI as the heart of its ecosystem, and those purple lights might just be the first clue that the Assistant brand is on its way out.
With a revamped Siri set to launch later this year - potentially with new Apple smart home hardware - and the AI supercharged Alexa+ already rolling out, it's going to be fascinating to see how the next phase of the smart home revolution plays out.

Klarna's CEO is now taking your calls — over an AI hotline

Klarna CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski has already used AI to replace himself during earnings reports, and now Klarna is using AI to clone him another way: through an AI-powered phone hotline. The hotline is now open for users to provide feedback to an interactive AI version of Siemiatkowski that's trained on his 'real voice, insights, and experiences,' according to a press release. 'Customers, including consumers and merchants alike, can speak to it about product features, issues and suggestions for improvements,' Klarna says. ''AI Sebastian' can also answer questions about Klarna's vision and mission, and speak about its founding story and journey so far, based on learnings from 'real life Sebastian.'' After the hotline takes a call, a transcript and summary are generated that are 'automatically analyzed by a large language model (LLM), populating an internal live feed and innovation dashboard.' Klarna says its product and engineering teams will then review the 'actionable insights immediately' and assign 'priority tasks.' The company claims that issues raised today could 'translate into tangible product improvements already the following day.' Phone numbers for the hotline are available now in the US, +14246675385, and Sweden, +46852512594. I called the US hotline just to see what the experience was like. After a brief message telling me the call may be recorded, the AI version of Siemiatkowski prompted me to share feedback about using Klarna. No matter what I asked AI Siemiatkowski, even sillier questions, the AI generally tried to push me back to sharing feedback. When I asked if it had talked to Fortnite's AI Darth Vader, for example, here's what it said: That's an interesting question. My focus is entirely on Klarna and gathering feedback to improve our services. I don't have information or conversations with characters from games like Fortnite. I'm here to hear your thoughts on Klarna. Is there anything else about your experience with Klarna that you'd like to share, or any ideas you have for how we could make things even better?

A Digital Dollar Is a Trade War Weapon

Are trade wars good for tech after all? Circle Internet Group Inc., a major issuer of digital currencies designed to replicate the US dollar, has tripled in value since going public and is worth $23.6 billion (or 150 times last year's earnings). Call it Zuckerberg's revenge: Six years after Meta Platforms Inc. sparked a global backlash with its own plans for a digital dollar, the $250 billion stablecoin market is booming and has the backing of Donald Trump, Congress and investors. Europeans are watching the froth with concern. Even as the Louvre Museum this week hosted a crypto conference full of buzz at the prospect of more traditional financial institutions like Goldman Sachs Group Inc. or Societe Generale SA dipping their toe in this market, officials fear virtual currencies are a serious financial threat for the continent and an extension of Trump's ambitions of bringing global trade to heel. And they may be right to worry.
