SAGA: A Vietnamese 24-year-old male technical intern trainee has been arrested in relation to a murder-robbery and trespassing case in Imari, Saga prefecture, according to the Saga prefectural police.
Suspect Dam Duy Khang is alleged to have entered the residence of Maiko Mukumoto, a 40-year-old Japanese language instructor, around 4:20pm on Saturday, where he threatened her with a knife, stole ¥11,000 (US$74) before killing her by slashing her neck as she resisted, according to the announcement.
An autopsy determined that Mukumoto died from blood loss, with multiple stab and cut wounds on her neck and abdomen.
According to the prefectural police, Mukumoto and her mother, in her 70s, opened the front door after the intercom rang, and the man entered. The man was quoted as telling the two women at the entrance, 'Money' and 'Show me your wallet.' Then, he is suspected of stabbing them both.
The mother fled and asked a neighbour to call the police.
When police officers arrived, they found Mukumoto lying unconscious in the entranceway, and her death was confirmed.
The mother suffered a cut wound to her neck but is not in life-threatening condition. - The Japan News/ANN

Police detain former eFishery CEO who faked data

Police have detained the co-founder of eFishery Pte, investigating a startup whose collapse shook up South-East Asia's investment and tech community. Gibran Huzaifah was detained last week by the white-collar crimes division, the police said. He and two other former eFishery executives have remained in custody since July 31, according to a text message from Helfi Assegaf, director of special economic crimes at the National Police's Criminal Investigation Agency. The three have been 'officially named as suspects,' according to the police, though it was unclear if any have been officially charged with wrongdoing. Apart from Gibran, they detained and named two other suspects in the probe, Angga Hadrian Raditya and Andri Yadi. Both are former vice-presidents and had been interviewed by internal investigators. Gibran's detention comes months after he gave a detailed account of how he inflated revenue at a startup once valued north of US$1bil (RM4.2bil). Its ultimate collapse dealt a blow to several of the world's highest-profile investors from SoftBank Group Corp and Temasek Holdings Pte to Peak XV (formerly Sequoia India) and Abu Dhabi's 42XFund. The company, which deployed feeders to fish and shrimp farmers in Indonesia, incurred several hundred million dollars in losses between 2018 and 2024, Bloomberg News has reported. EFishery, which was valued at US$1.4bil (RM5.9bil) after a 2023 funding round, had been one of the highest-profile startups to emerge from Indonesia. — Bloomberg

Gaza civil defence reports 26 killed in Israeli attacks

GAZA CITY: Gaza's civil defence agency reported that 26 people were killed by Israeli gunfire and air strikes on Tuesday, including 14 waiting near an aid distribution site. Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP that eight died from Israeli gunfire near Khan Yunis, while six more were killed and 21 injured in central Gaza while awaiting food aid. The Israeli army stated it is investigating the incidents. Media restrictions in Gaza make independent verification difficult. Thousands gather daily at aid points, including those run by the US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, where chaotic scenes and reports of shootings are frequent. Bassal confirmed five deaths from an air strike on a tent in Al-Mawasi, a supposed safe zone. 'They say it's safe, but people die while obtaining aid,' said Adham Younes, who lost a relative. Mahmud Younes, another witness, described finding injured women covered in blood. Six more were killed near Gaza City, and one near Khan Yunis. Hamas's armed wing, the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades, claimed striking an Israeli command centre in the Morag Axis. - AFP
