Report: PWHL to add Vancouver as first expansion club
April 18 - The Professional Women's Hockey League is set to add an expansion club in the 2025-26 season, with all signs indicating that team will land in Vancouver, The Athletic reported Friday.
A news conference is scheduled for Thursday of next week, with organizers teasing "a historic announcement in British Columbia sports." Officials from the province and the city of Vancouver are expected to attend.
The PWHL launched in 2024 with six clubs, and a Vancouver addition would represent the start of westward expansion. The charter teams are the Boston Fleet, Minnesota Frost, Montreal Victoire, New York Sirens, Ottawa Charge and Toronto Sceptres.
"We're continuing to finalize decisions related to expansion and look forward to sharing more details soon," a league spokesperson said in a statement to The Athletic.
The PWHL held what it called a Takeover Tour, with games being played in nine non-league cities throughout North America. The highest turnout came in January when the league hosted a game in Vancouver with nearly 19,000 fans on hand. A stop in Seattle attracted more than 12,000 people - a positive sign should the PWHL desire to place two teams in the Pacific Northwest.
The league is owned by Mark Walter, the owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and his wife, Kimbra. The Walters own each team as well.

Key Rangers backroom figure departs for Liverpool role
White had been First Team Physical Performance and Reconditioning Coach at the Ibrox club since April 2024. He joined Rangers in 2021 before taking up a role as First Team Assistant Performance Coach in August 2023, after being initially brought in as a Sports Scientist in the academy. Read more: White has now joined Premier League champions Liverpool as First Team Physical Performance Coach. And he might not be the only man with a Rangers background at Anfield next season. Indeed, former Ibrox boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst is reportedly close to being appointed to a role in Arme Slot's backroom team. The Dutchman spent just under a year in charge of Rangers, leading the club he turned out for as a player to the 2022 Europa League final. Liverpool are now 'close' to appointing Van Bronckhorst to their backroom staff, claims The Athletic. He will replace his fellow countryman John Heitinga, who recently left Anfield to take on the role of head coach at Eredivisie outfit Ajax. Van Bronckhorst spent a brief spell in charge of Besiktas after leaving Rangers before taking up a role on UEFA's Executive Committee.

Celtic make 'official approach' to sign 16-goal midfielder
The 23-year-old scored 16 times in 32 appearances for the Danish top-flight outfit last season. Read more: The Athletic claims that Celtic have made an official approach to sign the player, and that his club are 'open to a sale' at the right price. Nygren is out of contract with Nordsjaelland at the end of the calendar year. Although predominantly an attack-minded midfielder, Nygren is also capable of operating as a centre-forward or on the left and right flanks. He has made four senior appearances for his country, Sweden, scoring twice in those. Nygren bagged a hat-trick for Nordsjaelland against Fenerbache in the UEFA Conference League last season. Celtic have been linked with a host of players over the past few days as transfer activity ramps up in Glasgow's east end following the confirmation of Kieran Tierney's return. The left-back penned a five-year deal on Tuesday, although Brendan Rodgers clearly has his sights set on further reinforcements in attacking areas.

Vancouver picks D Ashton Bell to open PWHL expansion draft
June 10 - Ottawa Charge defender Ashton Bell was selected by Vancouver with the first overall pick in the Professional Women's Hockey League expansion draft on Monday. Seattle then had the next two choices and selected Ottawa defender Aneta Tejralova and Boston Fleet forward Hannah Bilka. Bell, 25, had three goals and three assists in 27 games for Ottawa last season, giving her five goals and eight assists through two seasons (51 games) with the Charge. The University of Minnesota-Duluth product was part of Canada's gold-medal-winning 2022 Olympic team and its 2021, 2022 and 2024 championship squads in the IIHF Women's World Championships. Tejralova, 29, produced one goal and nine assists in 30 games last season after posting two goals and six assists in 23 games the prior campaign. She won bronze medals with the Czech Republic team at the 2022 and 2023 World Championships. Bilka, 24, is coming off a five-goal, six-assist rookie campaign in 16 games for the Fleet. The Ohio State alumna was on the United States' winning 2023 World Championships squad. A lottery win allowed Vancouver to either have the first pick or the second and third pick, and Vancouver general manager Cara Gardner Morey went for the former option. Following Seattle's picks at Nos. 2 and 3, the teams alternated making two selections apiece. Vancouver wound up choosing five forwards and two defenders, while Seattle picked four defenders and three forwards. The expansion draft came after both teams had an opportunity to sign up to five players left unprotected by the existing six clubs, and each team reached the limit. Seattle made a big splash by signing former Boston forward Hilary Knight, a four-time U.S. Olympian. Neither the Vancouver team nor the Seattle team has announced a nickname ahead joining the PWSL for the 2025-26 season.
