Report: PWHL to add Vancouver as first expansion club
April 18 - The Professional Women's Hockey League is set to add an expansion club in the 2025-26 season, with all signs indicating that team will land in Vancouver, The Athletic reported Friday. A news conference is scheduled for Thursday of next week, with organizers teasing "a historic announcement in British Columbia sports." Officials from the province and the city of Vancouver are expected to attend. The PWHL launched in 2024 with six clubs, and a Vancouver addition would represent the start of westward expansion. The charter teams are the Boston Fleet, Minnesota Frost, Montreal Victoire, New York Sirens, Ottawa Charge and Toronto Sceptres. "We're continuing to finalize decisions related to expansion and look forward to sharing more details soon," a league spokesperson said in a statement to The Athletic. The PWHL held what it called a Takeover Tour, with games being played in nine non-league cities throughout North America. The highest turnout came in January when the league hosted a game in Vancouver with nearly 19,000 fans on hand. A stop in Seattle attracted more than 12,000 people - a positive sign should the PWHL desire to place two teams in the Pacific Northwest. The league is owned by Mark Walter, the owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and his wife, Kimbra. The Walters own each team as well. --Field Level Media

PWHL to announce Vancouver as first expansion team, could start play in 2025-26: Sources
PWHL to announce Vancouver as first expansion team, could start play in 2025-26: Sources PWHL to announce Vancouver as first expansion team, could start play in 2025-26: Sources The Professional Women's Hockey League is expected to announce a new franchise in Vancouver next week, according to sources briefed on the matter. The Vancouver team will be the PWHL's first expansion franchise. The team is expected to play in 2025-26. Advertisement A news advisory released Thursday morning invited media members to an April 23 news conference, citing 'a historic announcement in British Columbia sports.' The news conference, where the PWHL franchise is set to be announced, will feature representatives from the province of British Columbia, the city of Vancouver and 'key stakeholders.' The Vancouver Province was first to report news of the PWHL's expansion to Vancouver. The PWHL's expansion comes less than two years after its launch in January 2024, with original six markets in Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Boston, New York and Minnesota. League executives announced in October they were preparing for expansion, due to the success of Year 1, which included record-breaking attendance and impressive television numbers. The league and its teams are owned by Mark Walter, the billionaire owner of the MLB's Los Angeles Dodgers, and his wife, Kimbra. In November, Dodgers president and PWHL board member Stan Kasten said he loved the league's single-entity ownership model and that the league didn't 'have any plans to change it now.' Advertisement It's unclear where the PWHL's Vancouver team would play, though one likely possibility is the Pacific Coliseum, the former home of the WHL's Vancouver Giants. The Pacific Coliseum has over 15,000 seats. The PWHL received more than 20 proposals from interested parties and markets seeking to bring a PWHL team to their city. Some were stops on the PWHL Takeover Tour; a nine-game barnstorm around North America. The January stop in Vancouver, with 18,940 fans at Rogers Arena, was the highest among Takeover Tour games and the second-most attended game of the 2024-25 season. In October, the PWHL said it was exploring the addition of as many as two new franchises. It's unclear where the second team might land, but it stands to reason that it could be geographically close to Vancouver for cost-related reasons. The PWHL's Takeover Tour opened in Seattle at Climate Pledge Arena with more than 12,000 fans. This article originally appeared in The Athletic. Doechii Earns Her First Hot 100 Top 10 Smash
Doechii's 'Anxiety' becomes her first top 10 hit on the Hot 100, years after its release, thanks to ... More viral momentum and renewed attention. PARIS, FRANCE - MARCH 04: Doechii attends the "Le Grand Diner du Louvre" Passage Richelieu Photocall at Musee du Louvre on March 04, 2025 in Paris, France. (Photo by Pascal) Doechii has been working toward a real breakthrough moment for years, and this week, she officially becomes a proper star in the eyes of the industry – at least in one regard. Reaching the top 10 on the Hot 100 is a major milestone for any artist. It signals not just a win, but that a huge number of people know an act's work, and name. The rising talent's first trip into that elite territory doesn't come thanks to a brand new smash, but rather an older cut that's recently found new life. This week, Doechii lands her first top 10 hit on the Hot 100 with 'Anxiety.' The track lifts from No. 13 to No. 10, just barely sneaking into the highest tier on the all-genre ranking. Before 'Anxiety' arrived, Doechii had landed six other placements on the Hot 100. While several of those tracks showed promise, none came close to this kind of success. Just one week ago, 'Anxiety' debuted at No. 13, instantly becoming her highest-charting title on the list. That immediate success marked a new personal best, as it passed 'Denial is a River,' which had previously peaked at No. 21. 'Anxiety' isn't a new single. In fact, it's been around for quite some time. Originally released in 2019, the track was first shared as a promotional release. At the time, Doechii was still just starting to build her reputation, and while the tune helped introduce her to a wider audience, it wasn't positioned as a proper single. Everything changed when Sleepy Hallow interpolated the track on a song of his own, which turned into a modest hit. That cut reached the Hot 100 only recently, thanks to Doechii's newfound fame. 'Anxiety' is built on a sample from Gotye and Kimbra's 'Somebody That I Used to Know,' which topped the Hot 100 and won multiple Grammys more than a decade ago. That familiar sound likely helped it connect with listeners quickly, especially those who hadn't heard Doechii's music before. The debut of 'Anxiety' in the top 10 is just the latest win for Doechii, who is clearly in the middle of an exciting upward trajectory. Earlier this year, she won the Grammy for Best Rap Album for Alligator Bites Never Heal, which has only grown in popularity since she took home the golden gramophone. Just a few weeks after making history by claiming that prize, she officially released 'Anxiety' to streaming platforms. The tune had been a longtime fan-favorite, and once it was properly available, it didn't take long to become a full-fledged hit. In addition to its current Hot 100 success, 'Anxiety' is also now a bestseller. This week, it jumps from No. 4 to No. 1 on the Digital Song Sales chart. According to Billboard, the track sold 11,000 copies in the latest tracking frame, and it is about to become Doechii's her first leader on that tally.
