FURIOUSLY sketching a yellow family on the back of a piece of paper, cartoonist Matt Groening had just minutes to impress a room full of waiting TV executives.
The small-time comic strip maker had been given a shot at coming up with the
next
big animated series to fill a slot on American sketch series The

Show creator Matt Groening (L), screenwriter Matt Selman and producer David Silverman have been behind The Simpsons' success
Little did he know that the rushed doodle of a dad slumped on the sofa, a mother with towering
hair
and three kids — one loud, one weird and one mute — would soon take the world by storm.
Now, more than 35 years on, The Simpsons is on the brink of celebrating its 800th episode.
In a rare interview,
While receiving an Honorary Cristal Award at the Annecy International Animation
Film
Festival this week, he joked: 'It's a little-known fact that my parents' real names were . . . Itchy and Scratchy.
'No, seriously, I have a real father called Homer, a real mother called Marge, real siblings called Lisa and Maggie and a real grandfather called Abe.'
Contrary to popular
opinion
, that does not mean that Matt based cheeky
Instead, he thinks of himself more like Bart's nerdy and awkward best friend Milhouse.
The idea for the cartoon may have been simple, but Matt has never run out of
steam

Now in its 36th series, The Simpsons is currently on episode 790, with the milestone instalment due to air soon.
Actress Yeardley Smith, who has been
the voice
behind Lisa Simpson since the start, revealed that the cast had already gathered for a table read to test out
the script
for the 800th show, which is believed to be the finale of the current run.

She was joined by Dan Castellaneta (Homer), Julie Kavner (Marge), Sabrina Carpenter's aunt Nancy Cartwright (Bart), Harry Shearer (Ned Flanders), Hank Azaria (Moe and Chief Wiggum) and Pamela Hayden (Milhouse).
Matt teased: 'Our main motivation is to surprise ourselves.
'We figure that if we can surprise ourselves, we will probably surprise the audience as well.
'We have parodies of cinema and references to books, TV shows and personal autobiographical anecdotes.
'As it goes on, we become known for different kinds of jokes.'
One constant that fans love though is the celebrity cameos.

The Simpsons has had uncanny success at predicting future events on the world stage
Huge names who have featured over the years include
Ringo Starr

George Harrison
and Paul McCartney, Gordon Ramsay, Elon Musk and former Prime Minister Tony Blair.
And the writers also famously have a spooky knack for predicting the
future
.
From Donald Trump becoming President to the creation of Apple's FaceTime, viewers heard it from Springfield first.
But even with hundreds of episodes under his belt, Matt has no plans to shelve the series any time soon.
In fact, he even hopes it lives on long enough to catch up with the timeline of another hit Groening production, Futurama.
Matt joked: 'The Simpsons will still be on air in the year 3000!
'Unfortunately, critics will say the show has really been going downhill in the last one thousand years.'
Here, we take a dive into The Simpsons'
history
books to look at its famous cameos and amazing predictions.

IT'S not just the gags that have fans
hooked
, but the fact the hit series has long had an uncanny habit of predicting major future events.
Through the show's 36 series, a number of storylines have been manifested into
real life
after first making their appearance in the form of cartoon animation.
In 2000, Bart To The Future saw Lisa Simpson becoming US President, but a billboard in the background of one shot had a billboard ad for 'TRUMP 2024'.
Another episode in 1993 predicted COVID-19, when a flu spread through Springfield residents, while the EBOLA outbreak was predicted in a 1997 scene.

Elsewhere, the cartoon predicted the 2013 HORSE MEAT scandal, in its episode aired in 1994, which saw schoolkids unknowingly served horse meat for lunch.
In a 1995 episode titled Lisa's Wedding, people were seen using SMART WATCH-like devices to communicate – an entire two decades before Apple launched their wearable gadget, while technology similar to FACETIME also featured.

And in 1998, Homer appeared to figure out the mathematical equation behind the HIGGS BOSON discovery, 14 years before particle physicists confirmed the concept.
A 2012 episode, Lisa Goes Gaga, saw the young character watching singer LADY GAGA at the Super Bowl – suspended from the air in the same manner as the star's real-life 2017 show.
And in 2019, Mr Burns attended an exclusive gathering for celebrities, which was spookily similar to rapper P Diddy's infamous scandal-hit 'white parties'.
The celebrity cameos
THE Simpsons is not short on memorable characters.
But that hasn't stopped some of the world's most recognisable stars from wanting to have their moment being reimagined in yellow.
The Beatles' RINGO STARR was the first of the group to make an appearance in 1991, where he appeared as himself to encourage family matriarch Marge to pursue a career in the arts.
He was soon followed in series five's Homer's Barbershop Quartet by

SIMON COWELL first appeared in the series in 2004 as a brutally honest telly talent judge, while Space X tycoon ELON MUSK landed in a spaceship in an episode in 2015 and TONY BLAIR met with Homer in a 2003 episode that featured an animated version of the Queen.
Needless to say, Her Majesty did not guest star.
While Coldplay's CHRIS MARTIN sang in an animated concert as part of the series in 2010, telly chef GORDON RAMSAY made his appearance in 2011.

Controversial billionaire Elon Musk had an appearance on the show - on a spaceship

From sitcoms to sagas - TV's top dads

From grumpy sofa kings to emotionally complex crime lords, TV dads come in all shapes and sweater vests. They've made us laugh, cry, cringe and occasionally pick up the phone to call our own da. In honour of Father's Day, here's our pick of the most iconic and unforgettable dads to ever grace the small screen. Gerry Quinn - Derry Girls Played by: Tommy Tiernan The most underappreciated man in Derry. Surrounded by teenage chaos and chatty aunties, Gerry is the ultimate long-suffering dad, deadpan, dry, and deeply devoted. Philip Banks - The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Played by: James Avery Firm, fair, and full of fatherly wisdom, Uncle Phil wasn't just a dad; he was the rock of the Banks family and a guiding force for Will. A true TV icon. Homer Simpson - The Simpsons Voiced by: Dan Castellaneta Lovable, lazy, and often wildly inappropriate, Homer is the cartoon dad we all know and, somehow, love. His heart is in the right place, even if he isn't the smartest. Mick Carter - EastEnders Played by Danny Dyer From the Queen Vic to family drama, Mick Carter brought depth to the role of the pub landlord father. His struggles with literacy, his protective nature over his children, and his complex relationship with his own past made him one of soap opera's most compelling father figures. Jim Royle - The Royle Family Played by: Ricky Tomlinson King of the armchair and the sarcastic sigh, Jim is the sofa-bound dad who gave us some of the best deadpan one-liners in TV history. "My arse!" Tony Soprano - The Sopranos Played by: James Gandolfini A mafia boss with a therapist and a soft spot for his kids, Tony was complex, dangerous, and weirdly relatable. Possibly the most compelling TV dad of all time. Dan Conner - Roseanne / The Conners Played by: John Goodman Salt-of-the-earth and flannel-clad, Dan was the heart of the Conner family. He tackled life's challenges with humour, love, and plenty of dad wisdom. Ted Lasso - Ted Lasso Played by: Jason Sudeikis Part coach, part cheerleader, part philosopher - Ted is the dad who'll talk feelings and football. His optimism is infectious, his biscuits are legendary. Red Forman - That '70s Show Played by: Kurtwood Smith Gruff and no-nonsense, Red ruled with an iron glare and one famous threat: a foot up someone's ass. Beneath the bluster? A surprisingly big heart. Ned Stark - Game of Thrones Played by: Sean Bean Honourable to a fault, Ned tried to do right by his family - and paid the price. His legacy looms large, even long after that scene. Walter White - Breaking Bad Played by: Bryan Cranston What starts as a desperate dad trying to provide becomes a dark, explosive journey. Walter White is parenting goals… if those goals are extremely illegal and morally murky. Martin Crane - Frasier Played by: John Mahoney Down-to-earth and delightfully unimpressed, Martin brought warmth and reality to his posh sons' opera-fuelled antics. Dog in lap, beer in hand, he kept it real. Michael Bluth - Arrested Development Played by: Jason Bateman Stuck with the world's most dysfunctional family, Michael somehow kept (most of) his sanity while raising his son and parenting his own parents. Johnny Rose - Schitt's Creek Played by: Eugene Levy Elegant, earnest, and emotionally steady, Johnny evolved from fish-out-of-water to father-of-the-year material. Suitcases full of class and compassion.

Cork airport road renamed in honour of Rory Gallagher on 30th anniversary of musician's death

Gone 30 years, but certainly not forgotten in his home city, the unveiling of 'Rory Gallagher Avenue' took place at Cork Airport on Saturday morning. Fellow Leesider, An Taoiseach Micheál Martin TD, was on hand to perform the renaming ceremony of the main thoroughfare through the airport, with Cork's lord mayor Cllr Dan Boyle, and members of the Gallagher family among those in attendance. In many ways, the airport is a fitting place to memorialise the legendary guitarist who also has a city-centre plaza named after him, and an abstract statue by Geraldine Creedon, in Cork. As airport managing director Niall MacCarthy mentioned in his address, it was from this facility that Gallagher took his first ever plane journey in June 1965, when he flew to Spain with The Impact showband for their residency at an American air force base near Madrid. Fresh from his Leaving Cert, the talented 17-year-old had reluctantly agreed to cut his trademark long hair before travelling, for fear of not being admitted to Franco-ruled Spain. Cork Airport also featured in Gallagher's final journey when the 47-year-old was returned home following his death in London on June 14, 1995. In the intervening years, the Ballyshannon-born, Cork-raised musician had established a reputation as one of the best guitarists in the world. One of Ireland's first rock stars, Gallagher was a source of pride for Corkonians who witnessed one of their own rubbing shoulders with all sorts of international luminaries. Indeed, the airport unveiling came in a week when the music world was mourning the loss of Beach Boys' Brian Wilson and Sly Stone, both figures that Gallagher had shared bills with. Gallagher toured extensively in the US and Europe, but his younger brother Dónal recalled how Rory had always retained his affection for his hometown. 'Coming back to Cork Airport was the moment he always cherished and always loved. And the family and I are so deeply honoured. Thank you to everyone for turning out,' said Dónal. Karen Skelly from Ballyshannon, Keery Irvine from Belfast and Fiona Campbell at the launch of Cork Rocks for Rory. Picture: Darragh Kane During his speech at the event, the Taoiseach also recalled Gallagher's humility, describing how, during his tenure as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1993, he had to coax a the shy and reluctant star into attending a civic reception following a benefit gig at the Everyman Theatre for Bosnian refugees. 'Rory Gallagher was a genuine rock star who inspired people right around the world with his music,' added Mr Martin. 'His legacy is one which reverberates across Cork, and it is only fitting that he is honoured in the city where he spent much of his life. I want to pay tribute to the Gallagher family and all those at Cork Airport and Cork City Council in bringing about this wonderful initiative in Rory's memory.' Rebecca Loughry and Sarah Wrixon at the launch of Cork Rocks for Rory. Picture: Darragh Kane The airport unveiling also coincided with an ongoing Cork Rocks For Rory event that the City Council is running with the Gallagher family. A number of Rory-related exhibitions, discussions and other events are taking place across the city, culminating in three concerts by American guitarist Joe Bonamassa at the Marquee on July 1-3.
