From sitcoms to sagas - TV's top dads

RTÉ News14-06-2025
From grumpy sofa kings to emotionally complex crime lords, TV dads come in all shapes and sweater vests. They've made us laugh, cry, cringe and occasionally pick up the phone to call our own da.
In honour of Father's Day, here's our pick of the most iconic and unforgettable dads to ever grace the small screen.
Gerry Quinn - Derry Girls
Played by: Tommy Tiernan
The most underappreciated man in Derry. Surrounded by teenage chaos and chatty aunties, Gerry is the ultimate long-suffering dad, deadpan, dry, and deeply devoted.
Philip Banks - The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
Played by: James Avery
Firm, fair, and full of fatherly wisdom, Uncle Phil wasn't just a dad; he was the rock of the Banks family and a guiding force for Will. A true TV icon.
Homer Simpson - The Simpsons
Voiced by: Dan Castellaneta
Lovable, lazy, and often wildly inappropriate, Homer is the cartoon dad we all know and, somehow, love. His heart is in the right place, even if he isn't the smartest.
Mick Carter - EastEnders
Played by Danny Dyer
From the Queen Vic to family drama, Mick Carter brought depth to the role of the pub landlord father. His struggles with literacy, his protective nature over his children, and his complex relationship with his own past made him one of soap opera's most compelling father figures.
Jim Royle - The Royle Family
Played by: Ricky Tomlinson
King of the armchair and the sarcastic sigh, Jim is the sofa-bound dad who gave us some of the best deadpan one-liners in TV history. "My arse!"
Tony Soprano - The Sopranos
Played by: James Gandolfini
A mafia boss with a therapist and a soft spot for his kids, Tony was complex, dangerous, and weirdly relatable. Possibly the most compelling TV dad of all time.
Dan Conner - Roseanne / The Conners
Played by: John Goodman
Salt-of-the-earth and flannel-clad, Dan was the heart of the Conner family. He tackled life's challenges with humour, love, and plenty of dad wisdom.
Ted Lasso - Ted Lasso
Played by: Jason Sudeikis
Part coach, part cheerleader, part philosopher - Ted is the dad who'll talk feelings and football. His optimism is infectious, his biscuits are legendary.
Red Forman - That '70s Show
Played by: Kurtwood Smith
Gruff and no-nonsense, Red ruled with an iron glare and one famous threat: a foot up someone's ass. Beneath the bluster? A surprisingly big heart.
Ned Stark - Game of Thrones
Played by: Sean Bean
Honourable to a fault, Ned tried to do right by his family - and paid the price. His legacy looms large, even long after that scene.
Walter White - Breaking Bad
Played by: Bryan Cranston
What starts as a desperate dad trying to provide becomes a dark, explosive journey. Walter White is parenting goals… if those goals are extremely illegal and morally murky.
Martin Crane - Frasier
Played by: John Mahoney
Down-to-earth and delightfully unimpressed, Martin brought warmth and reality to his posh sons' opera-fuelled antics. Dog in lap, beer in hand, he kept it real.
Michael Bluth - Arrested Development
Played by: Jason Bateman
Stuck with the world's most dysfunctional family, Michael somehow kept (most of) his sanity while raising his son and parenting his own parents.
Johnny Rose - Schitt's Creek
Played by: Eugene Levy
Elegant, earnest, and emotionally steady, Johnny evolved from fish-out-of-water to father-of-the-year material. Suitcases full of class and compassion.

RTE release new trailer for The Traitors Ireland and reveal date show will hit screens – and it's sooner that you think

TRAIT'S OVER RTE release new trailer for The Traitors Ireland and reveal date show will hit screens – and it's sooner that you think RTE have revealed the official premiere date for The Traitors Ireland - and its just WEEKS away. The show, which is hosted by Derry Girls star Siobhan McSweeney, will air on RTE One later this month. Advertisement 3 RTE released a new promo for the hit show Credit: RTE Press Office Issue 3 The show is hosted by Siobhan McSweeney Credit: RTE Press Office Issue There has been massive anticipation for the Irish version of the hit show, with other iterations topping ratings around the world. The Irish version of the smash show will hit screens here on August 31. However, RTE have not disclosed whether The Traitors Ireland will air at 6:30pm - like Dancing With The Stars - or at the later time of 9:25pm after the news. An RTE source told The Irish Sun: 'That scheduling information will be available next week.' Advertisement Excitement increased today as the national broadcaster also released a new promo for the hit show, featuring host Siobhan. The nail-biting reality competition sees a group of strangers arrive at Slane Castle to play the ultimate game of deception, betrayal and trust, all in the hope of winning up to €50,000. But, hidden amongst them are the Traitors, who will attempt to secretly murder a player every night, without getting caught. It's up to the others, the Faithfuls, to try to detect who the Traitors are, and banish them from the game, before they become their next victim. An RTE release added: 'Expect conniving glances over banquet breakfasts, whispers in corridors and enough drama to make even the most loyal viewer question their instincts. As tension rises and alliances crumble, viewers will be left asking: who's lying, who's loyal and who's next?' Advertisement Filming of the reality show took place at Slane Castle earlier this year with the identity of the winner now a closely guarded secret. Owner of Slane Castle, Alex Conyngham - son of the late Henry Mount Charles - has revealed how he and his family lived on the top floor of the castle while below them contestants were being murdered in the nail-biting psychological reality competition. The Traitors shock as surprise winners walk away with £90k cash prize in VERY tense scenes He told us: 'Living on top of a film set is an unusual one, but I grew up with a bit of that because the movie The Great Train Robbery was filmed here with Sean Connery. "But this was a little bit different and more intense but I have to say it that (producer) Darren (Smith) and the whole crew were very respectful to us.' Advertisement OFFER CONSIDERATION Alex revealed he had to give it some serious consideration when Irish TV producers approached him to open up his ancestral home to all the mind games, missions, and unexpected twists for which the hit show is famous. He said: 'I had to look at it (offer) closely as you do with any heritage asset. I was concerned with the impact on the building but once we understood how it would work, we said yes. "The great thing with this castle is we have such an array of different rooms and scenery and I suppose that's what got everyone excited.' 'HE LOVED IT' The son of rock 'n' roll aristocrat Henry Mount Charles, said his dad, who died in June after filming wrapped, was "amused" by goings on in the TV show which sees constant murders, and betrayals. Advertisement Alex said: 'It would take a lot to surprise my dad. He loved the whole thing.' RTE announced that Republic of Telly host Kevin McGahern will host a spin-off show, The Traitors Ireland Uncloaked, in which celebrity guests and players from the game will discuss the latest betrayals, mind games and manipulations. Filmed in RTE Limerick, each episode will feature an exclusive interview with the banished or murdered player. With bonus unseen footage, some will learn the identity of the Traitors for the very first time. 3 The show will air on RTE One later this month Credit: RTE

The Traitors Ireland set to premiere at the end of the month

RTÉ has confirmed that The Traitors Ireland, the highly anticipated Irish version of the reality competition series, will officially premiere on Sunday, 31 August. The series will be hosted by Siobhán McSweeney, best known for her role as Sister Michael in Derry Girls. Set in Slane Castle in County Meath, the show will bring the psychological tension and strategic gameplay of the international format to Irish audiences for the first time. The Traitors, which was originally developed in the Netherlands, has achieved widespread success in several countries, including Britain and the US. The show involves a group of people, referred to as the "Faithful", competing to win a cash prize of €50,000. However, hidden among them are a small number of "Traitors", whose aim is to vote out the other contestants and claim the prize money for themselves. Each episode includes a series of tasks and a group vote, where contestants attempt to identify and banish the people they think are Traitors. If the Faithful successfully remove all Traitors by the final episode, they share the prize money. However, if a Traitor remains undetected, they get the full amount of prize money. RTÉ has described the series as a "spine-tingling" production, filmed in a location that enhances the atmosphere of secrecy and tension. In addition to the main programme, RTÉ will air a companion after-show titled Uncloaked, hosted by comedian Kevin McGahern. The show, produced in RTÉ's Limerick studio, will offer analysis and commentary on each episode, including reactions to key moments and eliminations. The British version, hosted by Claudia Winkleman, attracted more than eight million viewers for its season two finale, while the US version, available via NBCUniversal's Peacock platform, has been renewed for a third, fourth, and fifth season. The Traitors Ireland aims to build on that momentum with a distinctly Irish version of the show. The series will be available to watch weekly on RTÉ One and via RTÉ Player starting 31 August 2025. The couple are tying the knot in a much-anticipated ceremony surrounded by close friends and family. She got engaged to Mark, a property developer, after she popped the question to him on his birthday in 2023. Lorraine and Mark first met through mutual friends and said their connection was instant. Advertisement WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY In a desperate bid to change her appearance and feel healthier, the star embarked on an epic weight loss journey courtesy of fat jabs and surgery. Lorraine has admitted that using weight-loss injections wasn't for her after becoming "immune" to them. In a new interview, she confessed to using Wegovy, a weight-loss jab similar to Ozempic and Mounjaro, but she failed to find her desired figure on the medication. Advertisement Lorraine told the Mirror: "I'd tried Wegovy. I have friends on different weight-loss jabs and they work for them. "I'm not against them, but for whatever reason I feel like I got immune to them. "It got to the point where I was injecting myself and eating at the same time. "I was thinking, 'What the hell are you doing?' So I decided that was it, time to get this surgery booked." Advertisement Lorraine revealed that she opted to shell out "thousands" to undergo weight-loss surgery at a top Harley Street clinic in London. The actress confessed: "I'm not going to lie, nor am I promoting it, but I had weight-loss surgery two years ago. "I had a gastric sleeve. I went to Harley Street. I didn't go to a clinic in Turkey or anything. "In saying that, I've had friends who've gone to Turkey and had great experiences, but I didn't trust that process. Advertisement "So, yeah, I went to a London clinic, paid an awful lot of money and had it done. It's hands-down the best thing I've ever done – both for me and for my family." She continued to the publication: "I was at home watching an episode of EastEnders I was in and I could barely look at myself. "The person on screen was unrecognisable to me. "I know TV puts a stone on you, but… so yes, there was an element of vanity, but it was also me wanting to change things for my daughter and our future." Advertisement Lorraine has now been shy of showing off her svelte figure following her six and a half stone weight loss. She said: "I weigh 8st now. If you look at my little wrists and ankles, this is the weight I should have been. "I should be a thin person. And I always was, until I hit my late twenties." 8 She shared her epic weight loss journey courtesy of fat jabs and surgery Credit: Instagram Advertisement 8 Lorraine has admitted that using weight-loss injections wasn't for her after becoming "immune" to them Credit: Instagram 8 She confessed to using Wegovy, a weight-loss jab similar to Ozempic and Mounjaro, but she failed to find her desired figure on the medication Credit: Instagram 8 The actress celebrated in Portsmouth with her friends and family Credit: Instagram 8 She stunned in a white minidress, comfy trainers and accessories Credit: Instagram Advertisement
