UAE: 400 Arabic-language books donated to Palestinian children in Abu Dhabi
As part of its efforts to empower underprivileged children and uphold their right to read, and in line with UAE 'Reading Month,' Kalimat Foundation (KF), a UAE-based non-profit organisation, has donated 400 Arabic-language books to Palestinian children residing in Emirates Humanitarian City (EHC) in Abu Dhabi.
As part of the donation, two portable libraries were gifted to the school at Emirates Humanitarian City, containing 200 Arabic-language books, along with a portable library for the nursery, which includes 100 Arabic books. Additionally, 100 extra books were gifted directly to children who participated in an interactive reading session led by journalist and children's book author Samia Ayish, who took them on a journey through the book 'Aashat Al-Sheen,' published by Kalimat Group.
The donation falls under the 'Pledge a Library' initiative, which seeks to ensure children's access to knowledge and support their educational journey. As part of this initiative, portable libraries filled with a variety of books catering to different age groups were donated, alongside the organisation of engaging activities that included interactive workshops, recreational events, and cultural sessions. The visit welcomed 50 children aged 6 to 10, aiming to instill a love for reading and foster their intellectual and cultural development.

It also included a generous contribution from Sahar Wahbeh, creative designer and founder of 'Dumyé,' who gifted the nursery children handmade customised dolls, and conducted a doll-making workshop for the school children, providing them with an opportunity to unleash their creativity, nurture their sensory skills, and enhance their ability to communicate and innovate within an engaging educational environment.
This latest contribution builds upon Kalimat Foundation's long-standing commitment to supporting Palestinian children, and previously, the foundation has made notable efforts through its Ara Initiative, providing accessible books for blind and visually impaired children within Palestine. Furthermore, the foundation's 'Stitching Hope for Gaza' merchandise line, launched in April 2024, has demonstrated ongoing support, with all proceeds dedicated to the 'Tarahum for Gaza' campaign.

Sarah Al Amiri, Minister of Education, said the calendar represents a qualitative shift in managing the academic year. 'This unified calendar is part of our national approach to achieving the goals of the 'Year of Community' by fostering a socially connected and balanced educational ecosystem,' she said. She added that consistent holiday dates will also help cultural, tourism, and community organisations align their activities with the academic calendar, reinforcing the connection between education and broader society. Term dates and holiday breaks announced The academic year will begin on August 25, 2025, with the first term ending on December 7, 2025. Students will then enjoy a four-week winter break from December 8, 2025 to January 4, 2026, resuming classes on January 5, 2026. The second term runs from January 5 to March 15, 2026, followed by a two-week spring break from March 16 to 29, 2026. Classes will resume on March 30, except for private schools in Sharjah, where the term resumes on March 23. The third term will begin on March 30 and conclude on July 3, 2026, with Sharjah schools ending one day earlier on July 2. The schedule is designed to provide a balanced academic year that supports student learning and overall well-being. Mid-term breaks and flexibility for private schools The updated calendar also introduces mid-term breaks for public and private schools following the government curriculum. These short breaks are intended to reduce academic pressure and promote student wellness. The first mid-term break is scheduled for October 13–19, 2025, during the longest academic term. The second break will take place from February 11–15, 2026, offering students a pause during the winter term. A third break is planned for May 25–31, 2026, aligning with the Eid Al Adha holiday. Private schools not following the national curriculum are allowed to schedule their own October and February breaks, provided each does not exceed five consecutive days and remains within the designated months. These schools are required to align with the national calendar while accommodating their operational needs. The ministry emphasised that all schools must adhere to the approved calendar, including administering final assessments and completing curriculum requirements in the final week of each term. Exceptions apply only to students taking pre-scheduled international exams. Additionally, private schools following the government curriculum must comply with the centralised test calendar used in public schools.

Russian plane missing with nearly 50 people on board; all feared dead
An Antonov An-24 passenger plane carrying about 50 people crashed in Russia's far east on Thursday and initial information suggested that everyone on board was killed, Russian emergency services officials said. The burning fuselage of the plane, which was from the Soviet era and was nearly 50 years old, was spotted on the ground by a helicopter and rescue crews were rushing to the scene. Unverified video, shot from a helicopter and posted on social media, appeared to show that the plane had come down in a densely forested area. The plane, whose tail number showed it was built in 1976, was operated by a Siberia-based airline called Angara. It was en route from the city of Blagoveshchensk to Tynda and dropped off radar screens while approaching Tynda, a remote town in the Amur region bordering China. There were 43 passengers, including five children, and six crew members on board according to preliminary data, Vasily Orlov, the regional governor said. The emergencies ministry put the number of people on board somewhat lower, at around 40. Debris from the plane was found on a hill around 15 km (10 miles) from Tynda, the Interfax news agency quoted emergency service officials as saying. "During the search operation, a Mi-8 helicopter belonging to Rossaviatsiya discovered the fuselage of the aircraft, which was on fire," Yuliya Petina, an emergency services official, wrote on Telegram. "Rescuers continue to make their way to the scene of the accident". Authorities announced an investigation into the crash.
