Historic Nova Scotia ship that led to wave of Scottish immigrants relaunched

PICTOU - A restored replica of the square-rigged sailing ship that sparked a wave of Scottish immigration to Nova Scotia more than 250 years ago was relaunched Saturday with a mighty splash into Pictou harbour.
After a restoration and public fundraising effort that began in 2019, the rebuilt hull of the Hector was eased into the water sideways during a colourful ceremony on the town's scenic waterfront.
During the launch, the vessel was guided down seven ramps, known as launchways, after supporting wedges were removed — a process master shipbuilder Vern Shea described as a sight to see.
'It's kind of nerve-wracking,' Shea said in a recent interview. 'I've witnessed quite a few launches in my career, and you always get the hair on the back of your neck rising and the goosebumps every time you see it.'
Shea was instrumental in the original build of the Hector replica, which was not fit for sailing, and was installed 25 years ago, next to the interpretive centre and outbuildings of the Hector Heritage Quay.
The wooden vessel was built from the original designs, using traditional methods and materials, Shea said. Over the years, the vessel wasn't properly maintained and fell into disrepair before the Ship Hector Society bought it for a few dollars in 2010 from the town of Pictou.
The society has spearheaded a $4 million fundraising effort for the latest restoration, which required an extensive rebuild to transform the Hector into a fully working sailing vessel.
'It was the vision to sail it. It's been my hope all this time,' said Shea. 'It's becoming a reality, which is very fulfilling.'
Shea, who also worked on the engineering drawings for the rebuild of Nova Scotia's iconic schooner Bluenose II, said the latest rebuild of the Hector required all of the hull planking above the ship's waterline to be removed and replaced because of rot. The ship was then covered in fibreglass for added protection.
'We replaced all of the rotten planks up to the main deck with Douglas fir planking and then we filled the seams with pine and then used two layers of fibreglass,' Shea said.
Inside the hull are two cramped compartments built as they would have been in 1773, when 189 men, women and children made the harrowing 11-week voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. Smallpox claimed 18 lives during the journey.
'It would have been disgusting, there's no two ways about it,' said Shea.
On its website, the Ship Hector Society says those who arrived aboard the Hector made 'enormous cultural, political, intellectual and industrial contributions that shaped Nova Scotia and the rest of Canada.'
Saturday's launch was attended by several dignitaries, such as Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston, federal Attorney General Sean Fraser and Chief Tamara Young of the Pictou Landing First Nation.
Young said the arrival of Scottish settlers in northeastern Nova Scotia in 1773 changed the course of history for 'everyone who calls this land home.'
'For us as Mi'kmaq, our story does not begin with that ship. It began long before with thousands of years of life, culture and knowledge,' she said. 'The launch of this new ship, Hector, gives us an opportunity not just to commemorate the past, but to shape a better future.'
Now that the ship is in the water and as more funding becomes available, the next phase of the project will begin, such as installing electric motors, masts and sails. It's hoped the refurbished Hector will be ready for harbour tours by 2027, said society chair Wes Surett.
He said just over $2 million in public funds had been raised so far for the project, with another $1.8 million to go to finish the ship.
On Saturday, that effort got an added boost with a donation of $1.25 million, announced by David Sobey from the Sobeys grocery chain and co-chair of the Hector capital campaign.
Surett said the interpretive centre opened last month after an extensive revamp through funding from the federal and provincial governments.
Future plans for the site also include the addition of a sailing program, along with a wooden shipbuilding school.
Surett said a Hector that can finally set sail will be the real money-maker.
'We really see it (the ship) and that sailing experience generating the revenue to sustain the attraction long-term,' he said.

The MacCrimmon Clan of Dunvegan celebrated the 200th anniversary of Kenvegan Farms, originally settled in 1825 by Scottish immigrants Malcolm and Isabella MacCrimmon. Over 180 guests registered to attend the family reunion held at the farm, where the original house, barn and outbuildings still serve as an operating farm and home for Janet MacCrimmon. Relatives gathered under a large awning to enjoy lunch and conversation with family they haven't seen, in some cases, a very long time. Hours of research by family members, in particular Sylvia Lothian, created an incredibly detailed MacCrimmon family tree, from the original settlers, Malcom and Isabella, right through to the youngest children - the future of the MacCrimmon Clan. This family tree was posted on the side of the barn for everyone to find their own name and see where relatives of the MacCrimmon family branched to other clans. The reunion also comprised of a visit to the Glengarry Pioneer Museum with a tour that included some MacCrimmon family artifacts as well as opportunity to visit local church cemeteries, such as Kirk Hill United Church, St. Columba's Presbyterian Church & Kenyon Presbyterian Church, to see where family members rest. Guests to the MacCrimmon family reunion were entertained by Cadence MacIntosh who played the fiddle for everyone, and Hadley & Maeve Adams performed three Highland dances for all the relatives. Inside the farmhouse, attendees to the reunion could enjoy a slideshow and album with photos, along with framed pictures hanging on the original log walls of the home. Even inside the barn, visitors could see the log barn interior walls built so many years ago. SDG Counties' motto is 'Where Ontario Began' and standing in that barn made one realize that might just be the exact spot. Janet MacCrimmon thanked everyone for coming to the reunion from near and far, especially her own daughter Sarah, who travelled from British Columbia to be part of the event. Janet noted with appreciation the many hands that helped to groom and prepare the property for the reunion, and said the luncheon was made using local Glengarry products. Donaldson MacLeod offered a special greeting & grace in Gaelic, and Mayor Jamie MacDonald, from North Glengarry, presented a plaque to the MacCrimmon family acknowledging their prominence in settling Glengarry before Canada was even recognized as a country. MacCrimmon family members & relatives said Kenvegan Farms remaining in the same family for 200 years is quite significant. Very few farms in Glengarry can claim that distinction. Some farms have been reclaimed, purchased back by relatives of the original owners after years of belonging to others, but at Kenvegan, the MacCrimmons have remained farming the land, growing crops & cattle, and raising generation upon generation of families who call Glengarry home. Scottish ministers urged to rethink ‘poor decision' on guga hunt licence

Scottish ministers are being urged to rethink a 'poor decision' to grant a licence to cull hundreds of gannet chicks in the first guga hunt for four years. Animal welfare campaigners at OneKind said the practice – known locally as the guga hunt – is 'grisly' and 'cruel'. The group is urging the Scottish Government and its nature agency NatureScot to reverse the licence, which currently permits 500 of the infant birds to be culled. The guga hunt has been an annual tradition in Ness, north Lewis, since the 15th century, with 10 men setting out for the rocky island of Sula Sgeir 40 miles away. Uninhabited by humans, the island is home to thousands of pairs of breeding gannets, with the men spending two weeks there in August, taking the birds from open cliffs using a pole and noose, before the creatures are gutted, salted and preserved in brine. Traditionally the preserved birds are said to have formed an essential part of the winter diet for the people of Ness, but guga is now regarded as a delicacy by some, although it is said to be an 'acquired taste'. A NatureScot spokesperson said it recognises the 'cultural significance of the guga hunt', adding this was 'reflected in the provision to licence this traditional activity through the Wildlife and Countryside Act'. They added that 2025 is the first year it had received a licence application from the Men of Ness – who carry out the guga hunt – since 2021. The spokesperson continued: 'We have thoroughly assessed the application taking into account survey data and population analysis and we have granted a licence with a limit of 500 birds. 'This is significantly fewer than in previous years where up to 2,000 have been granted. 'This revised limit for 2025 safeguards the sustainability of the Sula Sgeir gannet population and allows for its continued recovery following avian flu.' However OneKind chief executive Jason Rose said: 'Snatching wild baby birds from their nests and bashing their heads in, using the excuse of tradition, will appall and embarrass most people in the Western Isles and across Scotland. 'There is simply no need for this cruel activity to take place. We live in a modern society where we have many more choices about where our food comes from. 'The guga hunt is a grisly story from history that should be left in books or a museum. 'The Scottish Government and its nature agency have made a poor decision. 'Do they really think this kind of cruel and unnecessary activity is how anyone wants Scotland to be seen in the year 2025? 'OneKind will be writing to both NatureScot and Scottish ministers asking them to rethink. It's not too late to save these beautiful wild bird chicks.' The Scottish Government has been contacted for comment.

Portage Métis Local Supports 50th Anniversary Event of Grant's Old Mill

A community celebration honouring Métis leader Cuthbert Grant brought history to life at Grant's Old Mill in Winnipeg last Saturday, drawing families, music lovers and history enthusiasts to the site of Western Canada's first water-powered grist mill. The July 3 event marked the 50th anniversary of the replica mill, built in 1975 to commemorate Grant's original 1800s structure. Although the historic replica is currently closed due to structural concerns, the milestone event highlighted both the significance of Grant's legacy and the urgent need for restoration efforts. 'The music, the food — it's fabulous,' said members of the Portage Métis Local in the Southwest Region, who attended the celebration. 'It's so great to see cultures coming together and to learn more about this place.' Born to a Scottish father and Métis mother, Cuthbert Grant was educated in England before returning to what was then Rupert's Land — a small territory in present-day Manitoba. He became a key figure in Métis history, aligning with the North West Company and supporting the Red River Métis community in their economic development. Grant's mill, constructed in the late 1800s in what is now west Winnipeg, was the first of its kind west of the Great Lakes. Though it only operated for three years due to droughts, flooding and harsh winters, it played an important role in helping Métis families grind their own flour and oats, contributing to their economic self-sufficiency and community-building alongside Scottish and Irish settlers. The mill was later commemorated during centennial celebrations in the 1970s, when a group of volunteers came together to build the replica. It officially opened on July 3, 1975, with Manitoba premier Ed Schreyer on hand for the occasion — and Schreyer returned this year to mark the 50th anniversary. In recent years, the mill has milled local wheat and even partnered with Patent 5 Distillery, which is preparing to release a whiskey made using grain processed at the site. But aging infrastructure has forced organizers to close the building to the public for the first time this year, ironically, in its five-decade history. 'The pillars are rotting, and some of the wood is failing,' said Tiffany Evans, a Red River Métis and volunteer involved with the mill. 'That's why we've started a new fundraiser to save this piece of history.' The campaign, titled Boards of Belief, allows donors to contribute at various levels — from $25 to over $2,500 — with larger donors receiving a board reclaimed from the structure. Donations can be made through . For many, the anniversary was not just a celebration of a structure, but a reminder of the power of history to unite. 'We all have roots in different places,' said Evans. 'But coming together in events like this — to share stories, music, food, and culture — helps us understand one another and keep traditions alive.'
