Former Ireland striker Julie-Ann Russell, who retired from football recently, has been nominated for two gongs in the FAI International Awards.
The Galway native is up against her ex-teammates Anna Patten and Kyra Carusa for the senior women's player of the year while she has also been shortlisted for Goal of the Year for her stunning strike against France in Páirc Uí Chaoimh last July.
Russell will vie with Robbie Brady for Goal of the Year as the veteran left-back's winning goal in Helsinki was also nominated as was Evan Ferguson's finish against Bulgaria in March's Nations League promotion-relegation play-off second leg at Aviva Stadium. Meanwhile, Abbie Larkin, Jessie Stapleton and Tyler Toland are up for the Women's young player award, with Finn Azaz, Festy Ebosele and Jake O'Brien vying for the men's category.
Taking in performances from June 2024 to May 2025, the eventual award winners will be presented with their trophies at Aviva Stadium ahead of the men's friendly between Ireland and Senegal on Friday, 6 June.

Bad news for Heimir Hallgrimsson after fitness update is issued on Ireland star

Ireland star Finn Azaz has emerged as a major doubt ahead of the start of the new Championship campaign. The Middlesbrough attacker is suffering from a quad injury and is currently considered unlikely to make his side's opener against Swansea City next month. Azaz has quickly become a key member of Heimir Hallgrímsson's side, thanks to his impressive displays, most notably in the Nations League play-off against Bulgaria in March. The seven-time capped attacking midfielder scored his first senior international goal in the 2-1 first-leg win in Plovdiv. Hallgrímsson will be hoping for a speedy recovery, ahead of the September World Cup qualification kick-off. Ireland are in action at home to Hungary and away to Armenia on September 6 and 9 respectively. In October, they are away to Portugal and home to Armenia, before the short campaign ends with a home clash against Portugal and a trip to Hungary in November. Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards revealed the news about the injuries to Azaz and George Edmundson on Friday. He said: 'George was a really disappointing one. It was the very first day when he felt his calf. Day one. He'll be a couple more weeks, I would have thought at the moment. 'Finn had a tightness in his quad. It was scanned, and he's probably going to be around three weeks as well. That's where he's at. 'It's really frustrating because he was looking brilliant in the early days – really motivated and looking really good. 'He's a naturally fit boy, so we're hoping that we get him back quickly and he doesn't require too much getting up to speed.' According to Edwards, his desire to see Boro play higher up the pitch has led to some tougher training sessions, increasing the risk of injury. 'From day one, my message has been about intensity, being a bit more aggressive and trying to take the game a bit higher up the pitch,' he said. 'It's hard to say that then not go into training and really do that with the boys. So, I think there would have been a little bit of a lift in the training intensity. 'There's always a slight risk, but I think we have to be pushing the lads.' Get the latest sports headlines straight to your inbox by signing up for free email .

Jose Mourinho breaks down in tears as he pays tribute to Diogo Jota

Jose Mourinho was visibly moved whilst reflecting on Diogo Jota's heartbreaking passing, describing the Liverpool striker as a "really fantastic boy". The 28 year old tragically lost his life alongside his brother Andre Silva, 25, in a fatal car crash during the early hours of Thursday, July 3. The Portuguese international had been making his way by vehicle to Santander, Spain, to board a ferry returning to Merseyside ahead of the Reds' pre-season preparations. News of his death reverberated throughout the football community and wider society. The Liverpool ace had recently claimed his maiden Premier League championship medal with the club, triumphed in the Nations League with Portugal, and married his longtime partner Rute merely a fortnight before the tragedy. One of the many people deeply saddened by his passing was his compatriot and former Chelsea and Manchester United manager, Mourinho. The 62-year-old was interviewed on Portugal's Channel 11 programme 'Futebol Total' on Tuesday night and became visibly moved when talking about Jota. Mourinho began by saying: "I greeted Jota twice. Once when we played Tottenham-Wolverhampton, and again at one of the Federation's 'Galas das Quinas'. Although I didn't know him, I know him so well... his agent is the same as mine. Image rights, managers... "My new collaborator, Antonio Dias, worked with him at Wolverhampton for a number of years. In other words, I know him well without ever having met him. "Everyone spoke of that boy with love. He was the player, the team player, the boy, the family man, the way he interacted with the organisation." Mourinho went on to add: "He must have been a really fantastic boy. I keep saying that I hope one day, but only in 40 or 50 years' time, I'll realise why these things happen. It's hard to understand." The Fenerbahce manager was among the countless sporting figures who paid tribute to Jota after the heartbreaking announcement of his death. He previously told Sky Sports: "When people leave this world, normally we all say, 'Such a nice guy'. Diogo was really a nice guy. "People in Liverpool know what I'm saying is true. He is a kid who nothing was easy for him, he had to fight to arrive where he arrived. Three kids without a dad, a young woman without her husband, the parents lose both sons... it's crazy. "It happened with me many, many years ago when I was working at Porto with Mr [Bobby] Robson. One of our boys, a loved boy, died in a car crash. "Instead of the boys suffering alone it was like the group suffered together and trying to fight for his memory. It was a boy, Rui Filipe, and we were champions, I think, for him. "In Liverpool they're going to suffer together. The club is a fantastic club. I think they are deciding to take away the shirt number 20. At Anfield, he will always be part of the family and maybe they lose a player but maybe they win even more soul than what they have."
