Leeds roundabout improvements to last 12 months
About 50,000 vehicles pass through the roundabout every day and the council said the junction lacks adequate crossing facilities and is a major barrier for walking and cycling, especially given its proximity to Lawnswood school.The council's deputy leader Jonathan Pryor said: "Having a junction with poor safety record right next to a school is essential to fix, so I am delighted to see the works starting this month."It's vitally important we address the safety of drivers and all road users, all as part of our Vision Zero strategy to work towards eliminating all traffic fatalities and severe injuries by 2040."
Key elements of the plan include making it a signalised roundabout with signalised pedestrian and cycle crossing facilities as well as creating segregated cycle facilities.There will also be an extension to the existing southbound bus lane on Otley Road and reduced speed limits from 70mph on the A6120 Ring Road, between King Lane and Lawnswood roundabout.The council also said it needs to create "attractive alternatives" to driving such as more reliable bus routes. Peter Carlill, deputy chair of the WYCA, added: "By improving crossings, reducing vehicle speeds, and introducing cycle lanes, we're helping ensure Lawnswood junction is a place where everyone can travel easily and safely."It's an important step towards a greener, more accessible, and better-connected region."

‘Relief' for motorists as average cost of insurance has fallen by £60 annually
The average cost of motor insurance premiums has fallen by £60 over the past year, according to figures from the Association of British Insurers (ABI). For the period April to June 2025, the average premium was £562 – down from £622 in the same quarter of 2024. Average premiums also fell by £19 compared with the first quarter of the year. The ABI said its members paid out £3.1 billion in car insurance claims during the second quarter of the year. It said repairs continue to be a major contributor to elevated claims costs. The increasing sophistication of vehicles, featuring complex electronics, advanced sensors, and integrated systems, has made repairs more intricate and time-consuming, the ABI said. It added that shortages of skilled technicians, slowing repair times, further inflates costs for insurers. The high cost of claims for theft has also played a role in the payouts, the ABI said. The average claim for theft of and from a vehicle increased by £319 compared with the previous quarter, reaching £11,800. Insurers settled 669,000 claims between April and June, 5% more than 639,000 settled in the first three months of the year. Mark Shepherd, head of general insurance policy at the ABI, said: 'It's encouraging to see motor premiums have fallen for a second consecutive quarter, offering some much-needed relief to drivers. 'But with the cost of cover still weighing on household finances, we must not lose momentum in tackling the persistent pressures driving up claims.' The ABI's research is based on nearly 28 million policies sold a year and is based on prices paid for cover rather than insurance quotes.

Nissan Ariya gets massive £9,000 price cut
The Nissan Ariya is the latest electric car to have its prices slashed to ensure it's eligible for the Government's new Electric Car Grant (ECG). But rather than the manufacturer trimming off a couple of hundred pounds, the former Auto Express Car of the Year is now more than £9,000 cheaper than it was just last week. However, thanks to Nissan and a Government-funded discount of £1,500, the entry-level 63kWh Engage model now costs £33,500 – £6,155 less than before. The base model offers up to 251 miles of range, and because all editions with the same powertrain are eligible for the ECG, the more well appointed Advance trim now starts from £37,500 and the top Evolve spec is available from £42,500. However, the long-range 87kWh Ariya, which is good for up to 329 miles on a single charge, has received an even larger cut of £9,155. Prices for an Ariya with the bigger battery used to start from £44,655, but this edition is now available from £35,500. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below The enormous reduction is the result of Nissan having to whittle the starting price down to below £37,000 in order for the longer-range models to be eligible for the EV grant. As with the Ariya's other powertrain, customers can upgrade to a higher specification and still get the Government discount. Advertisement - Article continues below As added bonuses, the price difference between the two battery sizes has dropped from £6,000 to just £2,000, plus more versions of the Ariya now avoid the £40,000 luxury car tax threshold, reducing running costs. Even though the all-wheel-drive e-4ORCE versions of the Ariya don't qualify for the EV grant, Nissan has still reduced their prices by more than £5,000, so they're now available from £45,500 – about £6,500 less than the equivalent Tesla Model Y. The high-performance Ariya Nismo costs the same as before: £56,630. Fiona Mackay, marketing director for Nissan GB, said: 'Securing eligibility for the UK Government's £1,500 Electric Vehicle Grant makes Ariya more accessible than ever. It now offers greater value without compromising on the innovation, design, and performance our customers expect, and reflects our approach of removing barriers to EV ownership and empowering more drivers to make the switch to zero-emission driving.' At the same time, it's been confirmed that a new special edition called the Ariya Shiro is coming soon and will also start from £33,500, because it'll qualify for the £1,500 Government grant. It will feature the 63kWh battery, an exclusive monotone pearlescent white paint, Nissan's ProPILOT driver-assistance system, a wireless smartphone charger and the Design Pack, which includes LED front foglights and rear privacy glass. So far, no car from any manufacturer has qualified for the maximum £3,750 Government grant, including the new Nissan Micra, which will start from £21,495 when it goes on sale next month. However, Nissan is confident the all-new third-generation Leaf arriving later this year will be eligible for the highest possible grant. Erling Haaland has continued to demonstrate his love of cars after the forward was spotted driving a new £200,000 truck earlier this week. The Man City star was seen leaving the club's Etihad Campus on Monday in a new Ford Shelby F-150 truck. The truck comes with a 5 litre V8 engine and is capable of going from zero to 60mph in 3.4 seconds. It adds to a fleet of cars Haaland has bought since moving to Man City for Borussia Dortmund back in 2022. The Norwegian has remarkably bought four cars since putting pen to paper on his latest Man City contract earlier this year. In January, Haaland signed the most lucrative contract in Premier League history, with his total package worth almost £1million per week over nine-and-a-half-years. The following month, Haaland was seen leaving training in a orange Porsche 911 GT3 which is worth over £200,000. Haaland was then reported to teamed up with billionaire car collector Ole Ertvaag to buy the Bugatti Tourbillion, worth a reported £4million.
