Indian-origin Nikhil Ravishankar becomes airline boss, New Zealand media disables comments on social media for massive trolling
Ravishankar was the chief digital officer of Air New Zealand before getting the major promotion which is the first for an Indian-origin person in the country.
New Zealand Herald, Radio New Zealand, 1News said they had to disable comments as they can't allow hatred. The New Zealand Herald issued a statement in which it clarified that there were several racist comments owing to which they had to take the extreme step. "We appreciate the high level of interest in this story but cannot safely moderate it at this time," the news outlet said in a post in the comment thread.
"We want to foster a safe online community by reducing instances of hate, racism, abuse and misinformation. We welcome your feedback on articles but there has to be some parameters, and these are explained in our community house rules...We cannot tolerate hate. We cannot tolerate abuse towards individuals in our stories or other commenters," the company's social media policy says.
Radio New Zealand had to do the same on the social media post on Ravishankar's appointment.
"Under RNZ's comments policy, we will proactively disable comments on posts which may attract abusive or harmful comments or when resources are required elsewhere," a spokesperson for RNZ said. "In this instance, the comments were disabled after our monitoring found racist comments," the spokesperson said. "We want people to feel safe and respected on our community forums and will continue to proactively disable comments where necessary.
We will not tolerate harmful communications."
1News said it received a large number of comments on the post that announced Ravishankar's appointment and a vast majority were inappropriate.
Who is Nikhil Ravishankar?
Nikhil Ravishankar was born in India but brought up in New Zealand. He studied in New Zealand -- holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from the University of Auckland. Before joining Air New Zealand, Ravishankar was Chief Digital Officer at Vector New Zealand (from 2017), and also worked as a Managing Director at Accenture across Hong Kong, Australia, and New Zealand, and in senior technology roles at Spark (formerly Telecom NZ).

T'puram: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan has criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for praising RSS in his Independence Day speech. He stated that giving credit to RSS and V D Savarkar for Indian independence was a denial of history. Vijayan said it was a dishonour to the independence struggle that the Prime Minister chose Independence Day itself to eulogize those who worshipped the British. RSS was banned in connection with the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, and Savarkar faced conspiracy charges related to the murder, the chief minister said. The conspiracy behind such an exercise was clearer in the Union petroleum ministry's Independence Day poster, featuring Savarkar above Gandhiji, he added. "Indians joined the national independence movement beyond caste, religion, dress and language differences. RSS played the role of bystanders then. They openly opposed the fundamental ideological concepts of the freedom movement. Instead of the unity in diversity that Indian nationalism upholds, they promoted a Hindutva nationalism based on majority communalism. On Nov 26, 1949, when the Constituent Assembly gave final approval to India's Constitution, the RSS mouthpiece, Organizer, editorialized that Manusmriti should be upheld instead of the Constitution," the chief minister said. Vijayan said Savarkar boycotted the Independence Day celebrations on Aug 15, 1947. It was this same Savarkar whom the Sangh Parivar is now projecting as a leader of the freedom struggle. RSS, which stood aloof throughout the phases of the freedom struggle, is now engaged in creating false narratives to claim a role in the national movement. "What respect do those who called for observing Aug 14 as a day of Partition horror have for Independence Day?" he asked. The nation must stand united against any attempt to bury the history of humanity and mutual respect and replace it with hatred, he added. India, South Korea resolve to set ‘new industrial ambition' in high-tech sectors
India and South Korea on Saturday resolved to expand their strategic partnership by setting new 'industrial ambition' in the areas of semiconductor, defence, clean energy, and artificial intelligence. Ways to ramp up the overall bilateral cooperation figured prominently in talks between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his visiting South Korean counterpart, Cho Hyun. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said Jaishankar and Hyun agreed to set new industrial ambitions, especially in high-tech sectors such as AI, semiconductors, clean energy, shipbuilding, and the defence industry. The ministers took stock of bilateral cooperation, including in the political, security, trade and economy, technological, and people-to-people domains, it said. In a social media post, Jaishankar said, 'Held productive discussions on advancing our bilateral cooperation in trade, manufacturing, maritime and people-to-people exchanges as well as new opportunities in AI, semiconductors, clean energy and defence.' Jaishankar said he and Hyun also exchanged perspectives on the Indo-Pacific region and contemporary global developments. 'Appreciated our deepening convergences and growing engagement as our Special Strategic Partnership completes 10 years,' he said. In his opening remarks at the meeting, Jaishankar also thanked Seoul for its condemnation of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Jaishankar made a mention of Seoul's support to an Indian parliamentary delegation that visited South Korea in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor. 'You have been barely a month in the job (as the foreign minister), the fact that you are here literally a day after your National Day, and our National Day, says a lot really about the value we attach to the relationship,' Jaishankar said. The MEA said Jaishankar and Hyun reaffirmed the strong and growing 'special strategic partnership' between the two countries. The partnership is rooted in shared democratic values, mutual trust, shared economic interests, and commitment to regional and global peace and stability, it said.

New Delhi: The second Indian to go to space and the first to visit the International Space Station has set foot in his homeland again. The plane carrying Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who returned to Earth - splashing down off the coast of California - on July 15, landed in Delhi in the early hours of Sunday. He was welcomed at the airport by his family, Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and a large crowd waving the national flag. He had been in the US for a year, training for the mission. The astronaut brings with him his learnings during the mission and at the NASA, Axiom and SpaceX facilities, which will be invaluable for India's human spaceflight ambitions, beginning with Gaganyaan, which is expected to launch in 2027. India also plans a Bharatiya Antariksh Station (Indian Space Station) by 2035 and a crewed mission to the moon by 2040. PM Meet Group Captain Shukla is expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had mentioned him in his Independence Day address, and take part in the National Space Day celebrations on August 23. "Our Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla has returned from the space station. In the coming days, he is returning to India," PM Modi had said in his address at the Red Fort while speaking about India's plans for its own space station. The PM had also asked the astronaut to document his learnings, training and stay at the International Space Station for India's future missions. Sources said Group Captain Shukla's mission will also be discussed in the Lok Sabha on Monday as part of a special discussion on the important role of the space programme in making India a developed nation by 2047. Emotional Post In a post on Instagram on his way back, Group Captain Shukla had posted a smiling photo of him on the plane and said he was experiencing a variety of emotions. "As I sit on the plane to come back to India, I have a mix of emotions running through my heart. I feel sad leaving a fantastic group of people behind who were my friends and family for the past year during this mission. I am also excited about meeting all my friends, family and everyone in the country for the first time post mission. I guess this is what life is - everything all at once," Group Captain Shukla wrote. "Having received incredible love and support from everyone during and after the mission, I can't wait to come back to India to share my experiences with all of you. Goodbyes are hard, but we need to keep moving in life. As my commander Peggy Whitson fondly says, 'the only constant in spaceflight is change'. I believe that applies to life as well," he added. Signing off with a line from the song 'Yun Hi Chala Chal' from the film 'Swades', he wrote, " Yun hi chala chal rahi - jeevan gaadi hai samay pahiya (Keep at it traveller, life is like a vehicle and time is the wheel)." 'Very Excited' Shubhanshu Shukla's family, which is based in Lucknow and was present at events to witness his launch and landing, was also eagerly awaiting his arrival. "I am very excited. My son has successfully completed his mission. We are very excited that my son is coming back. We are trying to meet him as soon as possible... we will meet him in Delhi," Group Captain Shukla's father, Shambhu Dayal Shukla, had told news agency IANS earlier in the day.
