Giant parachute responsible for landing 310-kg rover on Mars tested

India Today5 days ago
A European-designed parachute system, the most complex ever built for a Mars mission, has successfully completed a critical high-altitude drop test on Earth, confirming its readiness to land the 310-kg Rosalind Franklin ExoMars rover on the Martian surface. The test, conducted on July 7, 2025, at the Esrange Space Center in Kiruna, Sweden, simulated Martian conditions by releasing a mock descent module from a helium balloon at 29 kilometers above Earth, roughly three times the cruising altitude of commercial jets.advertisementThe capsule entered a free fall, accelerating to near-supersonic speeds before triggering a two-stage parachute deployment identical to what will be used on Mars.

'This is the largest parachute ever designed for a Mars landing, and we've now confirmed it works,' said Luca Ferracina, system engineer for ESA's ExoMars Entry, Descent, and Landing Module. 'We've taken one big step closer to delivering the Rosalind Franklin rover safely to the Red Planet.'Landing on Mars is notoriously difficult. Within just six minutes, spacecraft must slow from 21,000 km/h to a complete stop on the surface. The ExoMars system uses a thermal shield, followed by two main parachutes, each extracted by its own pilot chute, and retro-rockets that fire just 20 seconds before touchdown. The first parachute, 15 meters wide, slows the vehicle through supersonic speeds. The second, an immense 35-meter canopy, the largest ever destined for another planet, ensures a soft landing. Both chutes are built from lightweight materials and pack into compact 'doughnut' bags, with folding taking three days to ensure perfect deployment.

Originally qualified for flight in 2021, the parachute assembly was stored when the ExoMars mission was suspended due to the war in Ukraine. The Swedish test was designed to validate its performance after prolonged storage.Telemetry and high-speed video from the test will now be analyzed by UK company Vorticity, which leads parachute design and testing."This test confirms our parachute system is mission-ready," said Vorticity engineer John Underwood. "And it's poised to help Europe land safely on Mars for the first time."ExoMars is aiming for launch later this decade, carrying Europe's best hope for detecting signs of past Martian life.- EndsTrending Reel

European country Tesla CEO Elon Musk 'name checked' during earnings call for 171% jump in sales, announces 'surprise tax hike'

Tesla is facing tough time in Europe. Ever since Elon Musk decided to join Donald Trump's government, his political decisions have hurt the Electronic VEhicle (EV) maker almost across Europe. Elon Musk's souring ties with President Trump's administration too has not helped. The only bright spot in Europe for Tesla has been Turkey. In Europe, Turkey has been one of Tesla's fastest-growing markets. However, Tesla's efforts to mitigate slumping European sales with gains in Turkey may be at risk after a surprise tax hike in the country. Turkey has raised the lowest tier of its special consumption tax for electric vehicles — which includes Tesla's top-selling Model Y — to 25% from 10%, according to a presidential decree published in the country's Official Gazette. Tesla sales jump 171% in Turkey Turkey has emerged as an increasingly significant market for Tesla, helping alleviate falling demand elsewhere in Europe. In fact, CEO Elon Musk name-checked the country during the company's quarterly earnings call recently. Tesla sales in the country soared 171% in June to 7,235 units, with the Model Y taking the top spot among EVs. In same month, Tesla registrations across Europe dropped 23% to 34,781 vehicles, according to data published Thursday by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brain tumor has left my son feeling miserable; please help! Donate For Health Donate Now Undo What helped Tesla grow in Turkey Tesla's success in Turkey, driven by a locally tailored Model Y qualifying for a 10% tax rate, faces challenges as a new levy could raise prices by about $6,000, potentially dampening demand. Previously priced at 1.87 million liras ($46,100), the Model Y may lose its edge, while many combustion-engine competitors' tax brackets remain unchanged. This tax hike compounds issues for Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has flagged tough quarters ahead due to fading US EV subsidies and delays in autonomous vehicle progress. The policy shift also threatens competitors like BYD Co., which plans local production in Turkey and offers models like the Dolphin, Atto 3, and Seal in the same low-tax bracket. Other manufacturers, including Volkswagen AG, Hyundai Motor Co., and Stellantis NV, with affordable EVs in Turkey, may also feel the impact. AI Masterclass for Students. Telangana to draw on Estonia's expertise for health data digitisation

Telangana is keen on drawing upon Estonia's experience and technical expertise to strengthen the State's efforts in e-governance and digital public service delivery. IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu said this after a meeting with Estonia's Ambassador to India Marje Luup, who with a high-level trade delegation, met him at the Secretariat here on Friday. 'Globally recognised as a pioneer in digital governance and healthcare digitisation, Estonia's success is truly inspiring. Telangana, which is still in the early stages of health data digitisation, aims to partner with Estonia to accelerate progress in this domain,' he said. The Minister said this underscoring the role e-governance plays in delivering transparent and efficient public services. 'Estonia's collaboration can be instrumental in enhancing our systems,' he said, also listing cybersecurity as another area where mutual cooperation with the European country is essential. Highlighting Telangana's leadership in food processing and premium liquor manufacturing as well as its strengths in drone development, he said there is scope for cooperation with Estonia in several areas. The Minister's office in a release on the meeting, responding to the Ambassador's invitation to visit Estonia in September, said a delegation of senior officials from Telangana will travel to Estonia. 'Our team will engage in detailed discussions on collaboration in education, e-governance, AI and robotics,' he said. The Estonian Embassy, in a release, said the visit of the Ambassador and the delegation comes amid the emphasis on building closer ties with India, especially with regional innovation hubs in Hyderabad. The visit was to promote Estonia's thriving business and technology ecosystem, and explore opportunities for collaboration across areas like cybersecurity, health, digital governance, science, and startups. Ms. Luup said Telangana, with its strong focus on IT, progressive policies and innovation-driven platforms, is a natural partner for Estonia's aspirations in India. Hyderabad's phenomenal growth reflects India's digital capabilities, technological expertise and international outlook - which is evident in the presence of several tech powerhouses in Hi-Tech City.
