Spin in focus as Australia face rare T20I series decider test against Proteas

Hans Indiaa day ago
Cairns: On Saturday night, Australia will find themselves in rare territory when they face South Africa in a T20I series decider at a sold out Cazaly's Stadium. While the Proteas were in a similar position just three weeks ago in the T20I tri-series in Zimbabwe, Australia have not played a series deciding match since September 2022, with several series in that period decided before the final game or disrupted by rain.
The clash will also mark first men's T20I at the venue, thus adding an element of uncertainty for both sides as they fine-tune ahead of the 2026 Men's T20 World Cup. The venue last hosted international cricket in a 2022 ODI series, when spin proved to be effective — Adam Zampa took 5-35 against New Zealand, while a BBL game at the ground that year saw left-arm spinners Matthew Kuhnemann and West Indies' Akeal Hosein claim three wickets each.
That history of favouring spinners could tempt both teams into adding extra spin options. Australia are forced into at least one change, with Mitchell Owen ruled out due to concussion. Josh Inglis (flu) and Nathan Ellis (rested) are expected to return, while all-rounder Aaron Hardie could slot in at number seven, thus opening the door for a two-spinner combination alongside Zampa.
If that happens, it could see one of Josh Hazlewood, Sean Abbott or Ben Dwarshuis miss out, especially with an ODI series coming soon. South Africa, meanwhile, must decide whether to retain the pace-heavy attack that delivered victory in the second T20I in Darwin or bring back a left-arm spinner like George Linde or Senuran Muthusamy.
When: Saturday, August 16 - 2:45PM IST
Where: Cazalys Stadium, Cairns
Where to watch: JioHotstar (digital) and Star Sports Network (TV) in India
Squads
Australia: Mitchell Marsh (c), Sean Abbott, Alex Carey, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Aaron Hardie, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matt Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, and Adam Zampa
South Africa: Aiden Markram (c), Corbin Bosch, Dewald Brevis, Nandre Burger, George Linde, Kwena Maphaka, Senuran Muthusamy, Lungi Ngidi, Nqaba Peter, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, Prenelan Subrayen, and Rassie van der Dussen

Glenn Maxwell Goes Past Suryakumar Yadav In Elite T20I List. Only Indian Ahead Of Him Is...

Australia's seasoned all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who delivered a Player of the Match performance in the third T20I against South Africa, levelled former opener David Warner's elusive feat and broke India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav's six-hitting record on Saturday. While Maxwell delivered a spectacle with his sheer power-hitting, his magic in the outfield went under the radar. With a stellar piece of fielding, Maxwell completed the priceless catch of Dewald Brevis and went level with his former teammate Warner's record. His eye-catching effort marked his 62nd outfield catch for Australia, the joint-highest for the nation alongside Warner. For his record-shattering catch, Maxwell had to work hard and put in the hard yards to end Brevis' fireworks. The young Proteas batter was tormenting the hosts in their backyard by unleashing a barrage of boundaries. After Brevis dazzled with a rollicking 22-ball fifty, Nathan Ellis took the mantle of bringing his exploits to an end. In the 12th over, Ellis caught him off-guard with a short-length delivery, bereft of pace. He tried to pull the ball away but found a sprinting Maxwell, who pouched the ball with both hands to send Brevis back on 53(26), making the entire process look easy. Maxwell's job wasn't done yet. In pursuit of a 174-run target, Australia were tottering at 122/6, and a Maxwell special became the need of the hour. From ball one, Maxwell looked destined to deliver and flaunted his potential to clear the delivery when Australia desperately needed it. During his stellar outing with the bat, he hammered two maximums and went past India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav in the list of most sixes in T20Is. Maxwell now boasts 148 sixes, two more than Suyrakumar's tally. Overall, he is in the sixth spot behind Rohit Sharma (205), Martin Guptill (173), Muhammad Waseem (168), Jos Buttler (160) and Nicholas Pooran (149). He reduced the equation to run-a-ball before the 18th over, but was forced to watch a catastrophe in the penultimate over. While standing helpless at the non-striker's end, as Corbin Bosch executed a maiden double-wicket over, bringing down the equation to 10 required from six. Maxwell sprinted for a double and then punched the ball away for a four. Lungi Ngidi struck back with back-to-back dot balls, but Maxwell reverse scooped the ball to clear the short third fielder and seal a 2-1 series win for Australia. As the seasoned all-rounder returned unbeaten with 62 from 36, South Africa was overwhelmed by their seventh T20I series defeat in the last 10. Maxwell's run-fest also ensured that Australia maintained its unbeaten streak in men's internationals in Cairns and extended it to eight.

Dewald Brevis Creates History, Goes Past Virat Kohli In This Elite List

Last Updated: Dewald Brevis has broken Virat Kohli's record with 14 T20I sixes against Australia, but South Africa lose series decider despite his rapid 53. Star South Africa batter Dewald Brevis on Saturday, August 16, went past ace India batter Virat Kohli in an elite list, to become the batter with the most T20I sixes against Australia Down Under, although his quickfire knock wasn't enough to take South Africa to a win in the series decider. Brevis blasted 53 runs from 26 deliveries, including a four and six towering sixes. It was a ruthless knock from him. While Kohli had 12 sixes in 10 T20Is that he played against Australia Down Under, Brevis now has 14 in just three matches. THREE NO-LOOK SIXES IN A ROW FROM DEWALD BREVIS! @BKTtires | #PlayoftheDay | #AUSvSA — (@cricketcomau) August 16, 2025 Earlier in the game, Lhuan-dre Pretorius smacked a quick-fire 24 before falling to Nathan Ellis, bringing to the crease Brevis, who smashed a South African T20 record of 125* in match two. Brevis crunched his sixth ball onto the roof before a diving Glenn Maxwell dropped a tough one-handed opportunity at long-on. Brevis motored to his fifty off just 22 deliveries. Maxwell, a brilliant fielder, redeemed himself in the 12th over with a superb diving catch in the outfield to halt Brevis' charge on 53. South Africa's innings ran out of steam and their total appeared well short when Australia skipper Mitchell Marsh dominated a 66-run opening stand with Travis Head. But South Africa hit back with the quick wickets of Head (19) and Josh Inglis for a first-ball duck. Marsh made 54 before holing out to 19-year-old quick Kwena Maphaka, who later in the 11th over dismissed Cameron Green (nine). Australia's collapse of 6/56 was complete when in-form Tim David (17) and Aaron Hardie (one) were dismissed before Maxwell took over. The Aussie cricketers wore black armbands in honour of former skipper and coach Bob Simpson, who passed away at the age of 89. The three-match ODI series between the sides begins in Cairns on Tuesday. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Massive Boost For Team India Days Ahead Of Asia Cup Squad Announcement

Ahead of the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel's meeting to pick India's Asia Cup squad, T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav has cleared his fitness test at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. The swashbuckling batter, who last featured in the IPL and was adjudged Player-of-the-Series, had undergone surgery for a sports hernia in the lower-right abdomen in Munich, Germany, in June. "Fitness tests are mandatory before Return to Play (RTP) post-surgery. Surya has cleared the fitness test," a BCCI source told PTI. After surgery, Yadav had posted on Instagram: "Life Update: Underwent surgery for a sports hernia in the lower-right abdomen. Grateful to share that after a smooth surgery, I'm already on the road to recovery. Can't wait to be back." With fitness regained, the stylish batter is now set to attend the selection committee meeting in Mumbai on Tuesday. The Asia Cup will be played in the UAE from September 9-28, with India scheduled to open their campaign against the hosts on September 10, while the marquee fixture against arch-rivals Pakistan is slated on September 14, both in Dubai. The 34-year-old enjoyed a stellar IPL season, scoring 717 runs and was only the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to score over 600 runs for Mumbai Indians in a season. He finished behind Orange Cap winner Sai Sudharsan (759 runs) of Gujarat Titans and was instrumental in taking MI to the playoffs, where they beat Gujarat in the Eliminator before bowing out to Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2. Soon after, he turned out for Triumph Knights Mumbai North East in the T20 Mumbai League, scoring 122 runs in five innings. It is not clear whether the hernia pain aggravated during this phase. Suryakumar had an ankle surgery in 2023 and a sports hernia operation as well.
