'I visited city named UK's worst place to live and one thing is misunderstood'

Daily Mirror23-07-2025
Despite its reputation as the 'worst place to live', Yorkshire Live reporter Samantha Teasdale found herself pleasantly surprised as she strolled through the city of Hull.
While basking in the warm sunshine, a gentle breeze made it comfortable enough for her to explore the bustling streets with pride flags fluttering from numerous buildings.
Having been warned of what to expect before leaving, Samantha arrived with trepidation. But instead she was met with a bustling city that charmed her.
Arriving on a day when the city's university graduates were celebrating in gowns and caps, she looked back fondly on her own time as a student. Samantha said: "Memories of my own graduation brought a smile to my face, quickly replaced by the realisation that finding a quiet place to eat would be akin to Mission Impossible.
"Luckily, just before reaching the marina, I stumbled upon Furley and Co., which had available tables inside. One glance at their menu and I knew I had to try the steak sarnie.
"Served in toasted ciabatta with garlic butter, caramelised onions, melted cheddar and mozzarella cheese, it came with house slaw and garlic and rosemary potato wedges. It was the brunch of my dreams, featuring all my favourites (minus the onions, which I requested to be left out).
"For a mere £18.50, including a drink, it was well worth it. The portion size was just right and it was easy to eat - no mess!"
Once she'd had her fill of food in the city, Samantha strolled down to the marina. What would otherwise have been a serene scene was disturbed by ongoing construction - but this didn't deter her from enjoying the rest of the city.
Samantha discovered a number of hidden gems tucked behind the work sites, including cafes and restaurants. As she continued, she found an ice cream parlour called Tasty that was perfect for the weather.
Samantha opted for a 'Mr Whippy' with a flake. Despite being charged 50p for the topping, which is usually complimentary, she then found a relaxing scene at the waterfront.
She said: "Contentedly perched on a bench by the aquarium at the marina, I gazed out at the sea and pondered how Hull seemed rather pleasant. Could it really be such a terrible place to live?
"Granted, the construction isn't the most appealing sight, but it's temporary and often aimed at enhancing the area in the long run, even if it appears unsightly at present. After a period of relaxation, I had just enough time to delve deeper into the city. And I'm glad I did.
"I stumbled upon several art galleries and museums that evoked memories of London's Trafalgar Square, albeit remarkably clean and tidy. It was free from graffiti and evidently well-maintained.
"I would have loved to have visited the museums, art galleries and numerous shopping centres but it was time to head back and catch the train home. However, I can say for certain that I would love to return and explore the things that I missed on my stroll, as Hull holds many secrets and there are plenty of hidden shops to discover.
"There is a lot of good in Hull, and although I probably didn't venture into the 'rough parts', I believe it's a place that is misunderstood and striving to rejuvenate itself."

Everything Jane McDonald has said about moving on after partner's tragic death

Jane McDonald was left heartbroken after her partner, Ed Rothe, passed away following a short battle with lung cancer Jane McDonald faced immense sorrow in 2021 when her beloved partner Ed Rothe passed away, but has she spoken about the prospect of finding love once more? ‌ The much-loved telly star Jane, aged 62, shared over a decade of companionship with musician Ed. The couple first dated as teenagers in the 1980s and then reconnected years later following an unexpected encounter in 2008. ‌ Their relationship blossomed, leading to an engagement on Christmas Day that same year. Tragically, in 2021, Ed passed away at the age of 67 after a brief struggle with lung cancer. ‌ Since Ed's passing, Jane has stayed single, sharing her life with her best mate Sue Ravey, who joins her on Celebrity Gogglebox. ‌ Despite this, Jane has occasionally discussed her thoughts on settling down once again in the future, reports Yorkshire Live. Jane's 'not bothered' about seeking love In 2023, when asked if she was looking for love two years on from Ed's death, Jane expressed a lack of concern. ‌ "I'm not bothered. I'm really not. I don't feel like I need someone in my life to make it fulfilled," she revealed to MailOnline. She continued by expressing gratitude towards her friends for their unwavering support. Jane shared: "We have a coping mechanism. I have a great group of girlfriends now, who are all in the same situation, we have a great time, we go out, we have dinner, drinks, parties round each others' houses. "We're all in the same boat and it's lovely to know that there's someone there that you can call at three o'clock in the morning and say, 'I'm having a bad day.' I don't feel like I need anyone." ‌ Jane open to dating years after Ed's death. Meanwhile in October last year, Jane suggested that she might be receptive to fresh romantic opportunities. She revealed: "I'm not saying I'd never date again, but it's way down on my list of things that I want to do. "I was very lucky, I had the most amazing relationship with Ed, and not many people get that in life. So, if I never have another date in my life, that's fine. If I do, that's also fine." ‌ The singer told Heat Magazine: "I'm not shutting the door, but I have a great life without thinking I need a man in it. Singledom can be quite liberating." Jane on flirting with soap hunk Earlier this year, Jane popped up on ITV's Lorraine to discuss presenting the 2025 British Soap Awards. And it emerged that Jane caught herself 'flirting outrageously' with a Coronation Street heartthrob during the event. When presenter Ranvir Singh quizzed Jane about who leaves her "starstruck", she laughed: "I was a bit starstruck and flirted outrageously. "I did with Kit Green and even asked him if he bought handcuffs, but he didn't answer me. He's just beautiful, and it's funny because he's quite a villain in Corrie". Corrie's fresh face, Kit Green, portrayed by Jacob Roberts, first graced the soap last year as Bernie Winter's (Jane Hazlegrove) long-lost son.

Woman visits ice cream van for first time in 43 years and is floored by cost

Kimberley recently snapped up a treat from an ice cream van for the first time in 43 years, but the cost left her floored. She couldn't believe how much the prices had shot up Most people have vivid memories of grabbing a treat from an ice cream van growing up - with our love for them continuing today, even though prices are a little different now. Most people remember ordering a classic 99, but the ice cream game has changed a lot in recent years. ‌ In fact, one woman was recently left floored after ordering one for the first time in 43 years. Kimberley, known as kimble5 on TikTok, recently opened up about the cost of living and how the price of a treat from an ice cream van has shot up in recent years, and the situation left her totally floored. ‌ She recently posted a video detailing her experience, as she simply can't believe how much times have changed. Ice cream vans may bring a wave of nostalgia and joy to many but, according to her, they also have the potential to break the bank on a hot summer's day. ‌ In the clip, she said: "I don't know about you guys, but I have not bought an ice cream from an ice cream van in a very long time. I think it was probably 1982, and they were about 10p or 20p each then. "I asked for these two ice creams, and they were charging £4.00 for an ice cream. For two scoops of ice cream they were charging £4.00. "I'm like 'how much? Can you just wait and hang on while I go and get myself a loan?' That is absolutely ridiculous. I was gobsmacked. I thought that is just pure greed. ‌ "I know the cost of living has gone up, but for parents who have got four kids or something just to go to the park and have a simple day out - if they wanted an ice cream for the kids - it's going to cost them £16.00. It's just extortionate." Warning: Below video may contain offensive language ‌ Kimberley admitted she knows there's a cost of living crisis going on, but she thinks the prices have gone too far. She said it even cost extra to buy sprinkles too. In the clip, she admitted she posts a lot about the cost of living, but she said it "makes her outraged." Since she shared the video, dozens of people chimed in to offer their thoughts. One person said: "I couldn't agree more. Well said lovely." Another added: "£14.95 on Saturday for two kids tubs and two cones. What happened to £1.50 ice lollies and £2.00 cones?" ‌ A third replied: "99 Flake used to be 99p." Meanwhile, a fourth commented: "We went to the beach last week, and it was one scoop for £4.00." Someone else also chimed in with: "Very expensive now." According to Park Holidays, London ranks as the most expensive city to bag a Mr Whippy, with the average cost being £4.10 per ice cream cone, which works out as nearly double anywhere else in the country. Since the Mr Whippy ice cream cone was introduced at 99p in 1958, prices have rocketed by 120% when compared to recent average costs in London. Meanwhile, in Yorkshire and The Humber, you can enjoy an ice cream for the average price of £2.90. In Swansea, the average cost is around £2.67 for a cone. Little you may know, Edinburgh is also quite expensive, with some vans flogging a single cone for as much as £4.00 each. On average, the price of ice cream from a UK ice cream van can range from anything from £1.50 to £3.50, depending on the type of ice cream and any additions you want. Soft-serve ice cream is usually the cheapest, while hard ice cream, organic or vegan options tend to be more expensive. Toppings and sauces can also carry an additional fee.
