4 in the live rankings. It also firmly placed him in contention for a 2026 FIDE Candidates berth.
The 19-year-old kicked off the season with a memorable win at Wijk aan Zee, followed it up with a joint-first finish at the Superbet Chess Classic in Romania, and then clinched the UzChess Cup in Tashkent, which put him in pole position on the FIDE Circuit leaderboard with 86.28 points. While the World Cup and Grand Swiss later this year will be decisive, for now, the Chennai youngster is well and truly in the driver's seat.
'This year has been good for me so far and I hope it continues. We made some changes in my game and it's showing results. Last year, things didn't go my way. Ramesh sir and I worked and tried to find things to change…Those were the difficult things. Now there are a lot of tournaments coming up…Candidates, Grand Swiss, GCT..And I'm trying to focus on all of them and take one at a time,' Pragg said on the sidelines of the 'Chola Chess' academy launch here on Wednesday.
When asked if he feels on track for the Candidates seat, Pragg said: 'I'm giving my best and we will see…There are a lot more important tournaments lined up. In the FIDE Circuit, anyone can come up and catch me. For me personally, I will take each tournament separately and I want to give my best for every tournament. Let's see how it goes.'
Anand hopeful that Pragg will qualify for Candidates
Pragg had qualified for the Candidates last year but finished fifth in the prestigious tournament. Five-time world champion
, who has closely tracked Pragg's rise, believes the teenager has got 'extra motivation' to perform better.

'He's (Pragg) having a sensational year overall. I think for him, missing out (on winning) the Candidates last year is a reaction this year. He's got that extra motivation. As he himself noted, the most important thing is not to be leading the FIDE Circuit now…It's to be leading when it ends. Hopefully that'll happen. Otherwise, he's still got chances through the Swiss or the World Cup. But his biggest lead is in the FIDE Circuit.
And good luck to him. I'm really hopeful he will qualify for the Candidates, but I don't want to jinx anything,' said the 55-year-old.
'Gukesh showing signs of progress'
Meanwhile, Gukesh has had an uneven run after being crowned the youngest world champion. And in recent weeks, the Chennai boy had to deal with some jibes from World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen.
'I think he's (Gukesh) showing signs of progress and after all, he's playing all the best players in the world now, constantly.
As for the jibes, they come with the territory. You cannot expect to be a world champion and say people will just be nice to me. You have to face that and I don't see anything to be concerned about his game,' said Anand.
I'm enjoying chess now: Anand
Anand himself finished runner-up at the recent Leon Masters, showing he still has a move or two left. 'More than others, I take it one step at a time. I might play a tournament and not play for some time. But I'm enjoying the stage that I am in…where I'm not playing full-time, but I'm still able to come back and enjoy a bit of chess. I probably won't do it (stop playing) in secret.'

Confident of proving my mettle in Asia Cup: Rinku Singh
1 2 3 4 Fazal Khan Lucknow: After middle-order batter Rinku Singh on Tuesday managed to hold on to his place in the Indian squad for the upcoming Asia Cup , he said that his preparation is going well and he is determined to prove his mettle in the tournament. Talking to TOI while attending a practice session at sports galaxy ground, Rinku said, "This is the first time that I've got the opportunity to play in a multi-national tournament. Last year, I missed out on the T20 World Cup. If I am given the chance to play in the eleven, I will give my best." "My preparation is going well. Recently, I played a lot of practice matches ahead of the UPT20 League for my franchise, Meerut Mavericks, in Noida. I scored two fifties there which has infused a lot of confidence in me," he said. Asked about his playing position, he said, "Let me make it clear that I am not a finisher. Indian Premier League-2023 was the best phase of my career, and in that season, I batted at number 5. I scored runs for the team, and when I played for India, I also played at number 5 and scored three fifties for Team India. I have no inhibitions about batting on any position." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Highest Paying Degrees For 2025 Best Paying Degrees | Search Ads Learn More Undo Speaking about his experience with the ball, Rinku said, "Cricket has become fast-paced and selectors believe that if a player has both bowling and batting skills, it benefits the team. All-rounders are given preference in the team. I bowl quite a bit in the domestic circuit and have taken many wickets. I have also taken wickets internationally. I have been bowling for a while, though not as much, but now, I am prepared for it. " Of the 33 T20I matches Rinku has played for Team India, he did not get to bat in nine matches, and remained not out on as many as nine occasions. He has three half centuries to his credit, having made 546 runs at an average of 46 per innings at a strike rate of 161. Speaking about India's prospects in the Asia Cup, he said: "We are confident that we will win the tournament. Winning Asia Cup will be as good for me as for anyone else." On the ongoing UPT20 league, he said, "I thank 'Rajeev (Shukla) sir' and UPCA for successfully conducting the tournament for the third consecutive year. The tournament gives 10-12 prospective cricketers for IPL every year. Those who perform well in UPT20 League have better chances to be roped in by IPL franchises." England women's rugby coach Mitchell says World Cup favourites' tag 'irrelevant'
England coach John Mitchell believes it is "irrelevant" his side are favourites to win the Women's Rugby World Cup. HT Image Tournament hosts England kick-off this year's World Cup against the United States in Sunderland on Friday, with the Red Roses also facing Samoa and Australia in Pool A. England, the world's top-ranked side, have lost only once in their past 58 matches a defeat by Mitchell's native New Zealand in the Covid-delayed 2022 World Cup final. Mitchell, after naming his side Wednesday to play the United States, was asked about the challenge of being dubbed favourites even though England have lost lost five of the past six World Cup finals to New Zealand and were last crowned world champions back in 2014 "It doesn't really matter," said Mitchell, a former head coach of New Zealand's men's All Blacks. "We start the tournament equal like everyone else. "Being favourites is irrelevant to us. It might be relevant to your section of the world. We've just got to be where our feet are and earn the right each week." England, currently on a 27-game winning run, face a United States side ranked 10th in the world, with Mitchell urging his side to embrace being "hunted" by their opponents during the World Cup. "It's really important to basically focus on ourselves," he said. "We understand their threats it's not that we don't look at their threats but ultimately at the end of the day it's really important to focus on what we do and how we improve our margins, make sure that we perform above our standards." Mitchell added: "I'm sure if we take care of that, then that will take care of the threats. "Every team will rise 10 or 15 percent in this tournament because they're playing against England, that's just what we expect. From that point of view, we realise we're hunted but we also look forward to that as well." jdg/lp This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

Anantjeet Singh Naruka Shoots Gold At Asian Championships
Indian shooter Anantjeet Singh Naruka fired his way to his first individual gold medal in the Asian Championships after edging out Kuwait's Mansour Al Rashidi in the men's skeet final here on Wednesday. Earlier in the day, the Indian pair of Saurabh Chaudhary and rising teenager Suruchi Inder Singh clinched the 10m air pistol mixed team bronze, beating Chinese Taipei. Naruka finished on top of the podium after prevailing over former Asian Games champion Al Rashidi 57-56 in the final. Al-Ishaq Ali Ahmed of Qatar settled for the bronze medal with 43. The 27-year-old Naruka, who has won team gold and mixed team gold in the 2023 edition of the championships, qualified for the final in second position with 119 after five rounds, while Kuwait's Abdulaziz Alsaad led the pack with 120 on their way to the final. Al Rashidi was third in the qualification with 119. For Naruka, an Asian Games silver medallist, this was his fifth medal overall in the continental tournament. Earlier, the duo of Saurabh and Suruchi defeated Liu Heng-Yu and Hsieh Hsiang-Chen 17-9 to add to the individual bronze that double Olympic-medallist Manu Bhaker had won in the women's 10m air pistol competition on Tuesday. The Indian pair qualified for the medal round in fifth place with Suruchi firing 292 and Saurabh scoring 286. The duo aggregated 578 in qualification as six teams made it to the medal round. The top two teams, China and South Korea, competed for the gold medal with the former winning 16-12. The other four teams competed for two bronze medals, with India overcoming Chinese Taipei in the first bronze-medal match and Iran defeating Vietnam 16-8 in the other. Earlier, Suruchi, who has been on song this season winning four World Cup gold medals, started the qualification round with a perfect 100 in the opening series. She faltered in the second to score 94 and ended the preliminary round with a 98. Chaudhary had series of 95, 96 and 95. In the fight for the bronze, where the first team to reach 16 points wins the match, Suruchi had seven scores in the '10s', six of them 10.4 or above, which played a big role in the victory. Junior pistol shooters win gold In the junior 10m air pistol mixed team event, the Indian pair of Vanshika Chaudhary and Gavin Anthony won the gold, defeating the Korean duo of Kim Yejin and Kim Dooyeon 16-14. The Indians finished second in the qualification round with an aggregate score of 578, with Vanshika firing 282 and Gavin 296.
