Chief Justice hails Sri Ram as 'force of legal brilliance'
He said Sri Ram was a man of sharp intellect, unwavering principle and fearless independence, whose contributions to the judiciary and the rule of law remain unparalleled.
"On a personal note, to me, he was not just a judge. He was my friend, my teacher. And to the legal fraternity, he was a force of legal brilliance, integrity and courage.
"His judgments were masterclasses in reasoning, his words carried the weight of justice, and his unwavering commitment to the rule of law sets a standard that continues to inspire.
"Whether in constitutional matters, commercial disputes, or ground-breaking public interest cases, his contributions have left an indelible mark on Malaysia's legal landscape, shaping Malaysia's jurisprudence for generations,' he said in his speech at the launch of the book "Quintessential Gopal Sri Ram' at a hotel here on Saturday (Aug 16).
The event coincided with Sri Ram's 82nd birth anniversary. He died on Jan 29, 2023.
Wan Ahmad Farid, who was appointed as the 17th Chief Justice of Malaysia last month, recalled a personal encounter with Sri Ram in 1994, when he was practising in Kuala Terengganu.
He said his client insisted on a good team and specifically mentioned Sri Ram.
"Of course, that, in effect, meant that I was not good enough. I then took the liberty to call his office and speak to him, explaining that my firm was the solicitors on record and of my client's desire to engage him as a senior counsel.
"To my surprise, he told me: 'I have heard about you, Farid. I'll see you and your client in Kuala Terengganu tomorrow',' said the top judge.
Wan Ahmad Farid said they went on to have an excellent strategic discussion, during which his client suddenly asked: "Encik Sri Ram, with this amount of fees that I am paying you, could you guarantee success?'
"Came the crisp reply: 'I am not an insurance company in the business of guaranteeing anything',' said Wan Ahmad Farid.
Speaking about the book, he said this publication by Thomson Reuters is more than just a compilation of his judgments; it is a testament to his enduring influence.
He said for young lawyers, the book is an essential guide to judicial reasoning at its finest, while for seasoned practitioners, it is a reminder of the heights the profession can achieve when guided by wisdom and principle.

The MACC had arrested five senior armed forces officers on Wednesday for allegedly leaking military operation information to smugglers and colluding with a syndicate to smuggle in contraband, including drugs and cigarettes, estimated to be worth RM5 million a month. Meanwhile, Azam said during his speech at the close of KOMAWAR that it was organised not only to provide exposure and education on corruption and integrity but to instill values and build character among university students. Pahang Introduces Malaysia's First Prebiotic Rice
TEMERLOH, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- Pahang has become the first state in Malaysia to produce prebiotic rice, marketed under the brand name Beras Pahang. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail said the rice differs from other local varieties as it offers multiple benefits. 'Beras Pahang has its uniqueness. It is a prebiotic rice, low in sugar, and suitable for those with diabetes. 'It has already entered the market in limited quantities. For now, we are prioritising sales in Pahang before distribution in other states,' he told reporters after opening the Pahang Mini MAHA 2025 at Dataran Temerloh here today. Cultivated in the Ganchong paddy fields in Pekan, the rice is said to be tastier, more fragrant and softer, while its prebiotic content supports digestion and overall bowel health. At the event, Beras Pahang was offered at RM8 per kilogramme. Commenting on the inaugural Pahang Mini MAHA 2025, Wan Rosdy said it will be held at different locations each year following an overwhelming response, with over 80,000 visitors recorded today. Meanwhile, citing the Malaysian Agriculture Census interim report released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia, he said Pahang has proven its capability as the country's second-largest contributor to the agriculture sector, after Johor, with sales worth RM25.12 billion. Of that amount, he said 88 per cent came from the crop subsector, proving Pahang's fertile land and the hardworking spirit of its people.

Home Minister: Foreigner's Visa Status Does Not Grant Immunity To Break Malaysian Law
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- The visa status held by foreigners does not grant them immunity to break the law in this country. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said firm and stringent action will be taken against any foreign national who violates Malaysia's laws, including breaching pass conditions, posing a security threat, or disturbing public order. He said actions taken include pass cancellation, blacklisting, and deportation to the country of origin, and this principle is applied consistently, irrespective of the individual's background or status. "Visa status, whether as a student, investor, long-term visit pass holder, or participant in the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme, does not provide immunity from the laws of this country. "The safety of Malaysians and the sovereignty of the nation are non-negotiable priorities," he said in a statement tonight. Saifuddin said the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) consistently carries out its enforcement duties in a professional manner, without discrimination or exceptions based on race or country of origin, particularly in cases involving foreigners. He added that the law investigates all reports involving foreign nationals and takes appropriate action to ensure public safety, including in cases that receive media coverage. "Recent incidents involving foreigners that have gone viral have drawn public attention, but it must be emphasised that each case will be handled properly through existing laws," he said. He further said that Malaysia has specified that the recruitment of low-skilled foreign workers is permitted only from 15 officially designated source countries, and China is not among them.
