‘Saw news of his abduction on YouTube': Indian workers abducted in Mali; whereabouts still unknown; rescue bid on, embassy coordinating with officials

Time of India06-07-2025
HYDERABAD: What should have been a day of celebration turned into a nightmare for the family of Kurakula Amaralingeswara Rao, a Telangana native who was abducted by suspected militants in Mali on July 1, which apparently was his birthday.
That morning, he stopped responding to calls. The following day, the family learned he had been abducted during a terror attack at the Diamond Cement factory in Kayes city in western Mali.
"My husband's birthday was on July 1," said his wife Venkataramana. "He had spoken to me the previous night, asking about our son's injury. That was our last conversation," she said.
The family, originally from Adavidevulapally near Miryalaguda, had recently shifted to LB Nagar in Hyderabad.
"We have now returned to Miryalaguda to stay with other family members because we are under tremendous stress," she said.

Amaralingeswara Rao had travelled to Mali about eight months ago for work. Company officials have informed the family that they are making efforts for the safe release of Rao and two other Indians, including Panda Venkatramana, a 28-year-old from a Telugu-speaking family settled in Ganjam district of Odisha.
'Indian embassy in Mali coordinating with officials to trace, rescue victims'
Venkatramana's family approached the Hinjili police on Friday, desperate for information after receiving conflicting reports from the company, which is owned by Hyderabad-based Prasaditya Group. "His mother P Narasamma said the company first told her that her son was taken into police custody. But later, she saw news reports on YouTube saying he was abducted by militants. She was alarmed and approached us," said Hinjili police station SI Sunil.
A general diary entry was recorded by Hinjili police, but no FIR has been filed yet.
Venkatramana last spoke to his family on June 30. The next day, they were told he was in custody. But subsequent news confirmed that three Indian nationals, including two from the Telugu states, and a Chinese national were reportedly abducted by Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an al-Qaeda-affiliated terror group.
His brother-in-law, P Babloo, expressed frustration over the company's inconsistent communication.
"We are in complete shock. At first, they said he was in custody. Later they admitted he was abducted and said ransom talks were underway. We don't know what to believe. We just want the Indian govt to bring him back safely," he said.
Venkatramana had previously worked in Hyderabad for an escalator company before joining Bluestar and eventually moving to Mali, where he was employed in quality control. "He stayed with us before flying out.
We had no idea that he would end up in such danger," Babloo added.
His father had passed away a few years ago, and his mother, who resides in Odisha, is waiting anxiously for her son's whereabouts.
Meanwhile, the ministry of external affairs has confirmed the abductions and said the Indian embassy in Bamako, capital of Mali, is coordinating with authorities there and the employer to trace and rescue the victims. News reports also confirmed that three Indian nationals, and a Chinese worker were abducted by members of JNIM.
So far, no militant group has publicly claimed responsibility or made any demands.

Detention of Bangla-speaking migrants: Bhasha stir begins, Mamata to march in Birbhum today

As the Trinamool Congress on Sunday launched its Bhasha Andolan campaign over detention and deportation of Bangla-speaking migrants in several states of the country, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to lead a protest march in Birbhum town on Monday. The march will commence from the Tourist Lodge intersection and conclude at the Jambooni bus stand, followed by the chief minister's speech. On Sunday, she reiterated her charge against the BJP of unleashing a regime of 'linguistic terror' on Bengalis in the country, claiming that members of a migrant family were beaten up by the police in Delhi. Banerjee shared a video on X of a child and his mother purportedly belonging to a migrant family from West Bengal's Malda district, who were allegedly beaten up by the police in the national capital. 'Atrocious!! Terrible!! See how Delhi police brutally beat up a kid and his mother, members of a migrant family from Malda's Chanchal. See how even a child is not spared from the cruelty of violence in the regime of linguistic terror unleashed by BJP in the country against the Bengalis! Where are they taking our country now?' she wrote. Banerjee had last Monday accused the BJP of unleashing 'linguistic terrorism' on Bengalis, asserting that the fight for identity and language will continue until BJP is defeated. Speaking at the TMC's annual Martyrs' Day rally, she had announced that from Sunday, a movement would start in West Bengal to protest against 'attacks on Bengalis, the Bengali language and linguistic terrorism'. Marches were organised in Bhawanipore and Sealdah in Kolkata and elsewhere in Chuchura, Bankura, Birbhum, Cooch Behar by TMC workers, who held placards highlighting 'harassment and persecution' of the migrant workers in Assam, Odisha, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and Maharashtra by the police in those states. TMC MLA Asim Majumdar led the rally at Khadina More in Chuchura, where he asserted that the 'double-engine governments' in those BJP-ruled states were 'deliberately harassing' Bengali-speaking migrants despite producing documents like Aadhaar cards and Voter ID cards. 'As stated by our Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, we have started this 'language movement' from today, which will hit the streets every weekend till the middle of August in the run-up to Independence Day. We will not take the persecution of Bengalis lightly,' he asserted. TMC leader and North Bengal Development Minister Udayan Guha led another march at Dinhata in Cooch Behar, vowing to resist the 'attempt by the BJP to strike off names of legitimate voters from voter lists, and send Indian citizens from Bengal to detention camps for electoral gains'. Thousands of TMC activists took part in the rallies in Sealdah and Bhawanipore with placards displaying Bengali alphabets and slogans against 'torture on Bengali-speaking people by the BJP outside West Bengal'. The processions disrupted vehicular movement in parts of central and south Kolkata.

Another arrest in Punjab RPG attack puts Armenia-based syndicate in focus

1 2 Chandigarh: The special cell of Delhi Police has made another arrest in connection with the April 7 RPG attack at Qila Lal Singh police station in Punjab's Batala, nabbing 22-year-old Karanbir alias Karan from Gurdaspur in an Arms Act case registered at the special cell police station. An officer said he had confessed to his involvement in the rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) attack, which traces its roots to masterminds and handlers in the US, Greece, and Armenia. Karan, according to the special cell of Delhi Police, has allegiance with the banned terror group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI). His arrest came four days after another accused and alleged BKI operative, Akashdeep Singh alias Baaz (22), was arrested by the special cell from Indore on April 22. Both are residents of Chananke village in Amritsar district. Karan is the brother of Gursewak, who was among those already arrested by Punjab Police, an officer privy to the case details revealed. The Delhi Police officer said Karan spent three months in Armenia in 2024. He is accused of providing shelter to the perpetrators of the Qila Lal Singh police station attack and receiving funds sent by the handlers for the attack. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Resmed AirSense 11 with flat 20% off ResMed Buy Now Undo The officer also said two-three shooters of this syndicate have fled to Armenia, where one of the key components of this syndicate is based. The officer said Karan was also involved in other criminal activities carried out by the syndicate. Delhi additional commissioner of police Pramod Singh Kushwah said over the phone that after the arrest of Akashdeep from Indore, they learnt about Karanbir's involvement in the Qila Lal Singh police station attack case. "He was arrested in Gurdaspur on Sunday. He was part of the conspiracy and played a key role in the grenade attack," Kushwah said. The RPG attack case was initially probed by Punjab Police before it was handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) earlier this month. The special cell of Delhi Police had also started working on the BKI module allegedly involved in the attack after United States-based Happy Passia (arrested by the FBI in the US on April 17), Manu Agwan (who police believe is in Greece), and Gopi Nawanshahria (who police suspect to be in North America) claimed responsibility and threatened to carry out an attack in Delhi as well. Armenia-based Shera on radar Among others, Punjab Police have named Armenia-based Shamsher Singh aka Shera aka Honey as an accused in the Qila Lal Singh police station attack. According to Punjab Police, the associates of Shera were responsible for the retrieval and disposal of the RPG under his directions in the attack. Batala senior superintendent of police Suhail Qasim Mir said before giving the case to NIA, Punjab Police arrested a dozen accused, and Gursewak was one of them. "Armenia-based Shamsher Singh Shera is one of the accused," he said. Closely linked to now-arrested Happy Passia and Pakistani-based BKI terrorist Harwinder Singh Rinda, Shera, as per a police dossier, is described as a foreign-based active node of the Rinda-Passia terror network. The dossier reads, "He plays a key role in supporting the terror network by providing manpower, logistics, and financial aid for their nefarious activities." Shera is wanted by Punjab Police in FIRs linked to terrorism, organised crime, and anti-national acts, reads the dossier. Shera, a native of village Mann in Gurdaspur district, according to the police dossier, facilitated the targeted killing of Hardeep Singh, a resident of Jouria Kalan, Batala. He also tasked his local associates, Kuldeep Singh and Avtar Singh of Jalandhar, with carrying out target killings in the Ludhiana area. MSID:: 122936213 413 |
