Notre Dame pledge Mason Barth wins state baseball title
The Andrean (Merrillville, IN) right-handed pitcher/shortstop struck out Jasper's A.J. Huelsman with the bases loaded for the final out Friday night to help his team capture the IHSAA Class 3A State Championship in Indianapolis.
No. 1 Andrean scored two runs in the 6th inning and two more in the 7th before holding off Jasper in a 4-3 win at Victory Field in Indy. It is the ninth state title in program history for the 59ers. The powerhouse is 9-2 all-time in state championship games, with all nine titles coming within the last 20 years. The nine championships put the program in a tie with Lafayette Central Catholic for most all time.
Andrean finished with a 31-3 record.
The 5-foot-9, 195-pound Barth committed to Notre Dame in October 2022. Andrean head coach Dave Pishkur stated a few years back that Barth was the second-best freshman he's ever coached.

Jonathan Smith provides interesting update on MSU O-Line depth
Depth within the offensive line was a concern last season for the Spartans, but that doesn't appear to be the case anymore. Michigan State is in the midst of fall preseason camp, with the Spartans kicking off week three of practice earlier on Monday. As part of progressing into week three, Spartans head coach Jonathan Smith met with the media on Monday to discuss a number of topics surrounding his team. One of those was the depth he's seeing at offensive line. According to a post from Emmett Matasovsky of Spartan Shadows, Smith said there's a battle for the starting five spots on the offensive line, with "close to 10 guys" still in the mix. This quote is particularly interesting because, to me, this suggests they feel pretty good about essentially their entire two deep at offensive line. Michigan State's offensive line has been a weakness for the Spartans for what feels like a decade at this point. Sure, there have been bright spots along the way, but it hasn't been a unit that has given the fan base much faith over at least the last few seasons at a minimum. If Michigan State can put together an average Big Ten offensive line, I feel very confident in what they can achieve this season on that side of the ball. The skilled position groups all seem to be upper-tier in the league, with the offensive line being the biggest question mark. However, it's starting to sound like we should be putting more faith and expectations into that unit as we inch closer and close to the start of the 2025 season. UNC basketball to host four-star recruit for visit
The UNC basketball program will get a key recruit on campus. The North Carolina Tar Heels had a top 10 recruiting class for the 2025 cycle, headlined by the commitment of five-star forward Caleb Wilson. But for future classes, the Tar Heels have yet to land a commitment from the 2026 and 2027 classes. It's way too early to panic, however, as the Tar Heels continue to build their recruiting board. One prospect in the 2027 class that UNC has its eyes on is four-star combo guard LJ Smith out of Oak Hill. Smith has a total of 17 offers and now he's starting to set some visits. Per Travis Branham of 247Sports, Smith has scheduled an official visit to Georgia as well as unofficial visits to North Carolina and Tennessee. He will be on Georgia's campus for the weekend of September 27th. No dates have been announced for the visits to North Carolina and Tennessee. The 6-foot-4, 180-pound combo guard hails out of Mouth Of Wilson, Virginia and plays at Oak Hill Academy as he's one of the top prospects overall in the 2027 class. He's ranked No. 26 nationally, No. 2 combo guard and the No. 2 player in the state of Virginia per the 247Sports recruiting rankings. Steelers' Aaron Rodgers suffers apparent leg injury, HC Mike Tomlin gives positive update
Injuries have hit the Steelers hard over the past few weeks — and many believed 20-year veteran QB Aaron Rodgers might've been the latest. At the final day of training camp, Rodgers was spotted with his right leg heavily bandaged and iced — with reports and images of the incident causing some panic to set in on social media. This was hardly the news Steelers fans were looking for with less than 30 days until the regular season opener versus the New York Jets — that was until HC Mike Tomlin downplayed the injury entirely. "He just got stepped on,' Tomlin told the media on Tuesday. 'It was nothing of any significance. He finished his work.' Despite Tomlin's optimism, ESPN's Brooke Pryor reported Rodgers was "moving a step slower" to finish out practice. The situation is worth monitoring as the Steelers prepare for their second preseason matchup this Saturday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers — but considering Rodgers was unlikely to play in the preseason before being stepped on, it's safe to say his first game snaps will take place versus his former Jets in Week 1.
