Dubai, United Arab Emirates – Ford Middle East and North Africa (MENA) today announced 15% year-to-date sales across Ford and Lincoln brands in the first half of 2025, building on a record-breaking 2024. This performance cements Ford's position as the fastest-growing OEM among the region's top five, driven by a compelling product lineup, strategic network enhancements, and an unwavering focus on customer experience.

Saudi Arabia is hedging against a future where oil may lose value
When a Saudi consortium led by utilities giant Acwa Power signed $8.3 billion in deals this July to build seven solar and wind projects across the kingdom, it marked more than just another line entry in the country's growing clean energy portfolio. The projects will add 15 gigawatts of new renewable capacity, suggesting that Saudi Arabia is committing serious money and scale to green energy. But does this mean the world's largest oil exporter is genuinely changing how it invests in energy? That question matters because oil still dominates the kingdom's economy, with Saudi Arabia shipping more than 15 per cent of total global crude exports last year. Those petrodollars fill state coffers and provide the dry powder for its $940 billion sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund. That foundation is not going anywhere. But the kingdom is looking to hedge its bets, by maximising oil revenues today and investing in clean energy, technology and industry to prepare for a future in which global demand for oil is expected to peak around 2030 and begin a steady decline. Acwa Power deal The Acwa Power deal is part of that strategy. It aligns with Saudi Arabia's 'green initiative', a programme launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in 2021 to curb the kingdom's reliance on oil money and diversify its economy. The deal also supports its ambitious target of generating 50 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030 − which would be a meteoric rise from 1 per cent in 2023. It should also go a way to helping the kingdom reach its longer-term goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2060. However, some see Saudi Arabia's continued investment in fossil fuels as a contradiction that undermines the credibility of these climate pledges. The country contends that it needs to balance the realities of energy security with long-term decarbonisation. That balance comes at a price. Major green projects require huge investment, even though Saudi Arabia can produce renewable energy at a fairly low cost, thanks to abundant sunshine and low-cost solar panels. The highest hurdle is the upfront investment. For its part, the Public Investment Fund plays a big role in making that possible, by offering long-term contracts and financial support to reduce risk and attract private capital. Without that state backing, such projects are unlikely to be commercially viable, and private sector participation would be far harder to secure. State support was central to the Acwa Power deal. The PIF and Aramco Power, a subsidiary of oil giant Saudi Aramco, joined the consortium that signed long-term contracts with the state electricity buyer to develop the five solar farms and two wind projects across the kingdom. But even as deals like this move forward, the need for large-scale investment is only growing. Electricity demand in Saudi Arabia has grown rapidly for decades, fuelled by economic expansion, population growth and rising living standards, though the pace has eased slightly in recent years. Households still account for nearly 50 per cent of total electricity use, with air-conditioning alone responsible for most of that − a necessity in summer months when temperatures can reach a scorching 50°C. What's driving the demand? However, other factors are also driving that demand, including the energy needs of water desalination (removing salt from seawater to produce fresh water), as well as heavy industry and digital infrastructure, as the kingdom looks to diversify its economy. But meeting that demand still relies heavily on fossil fuels. At present, the country burns about one million barrels of oil equivalent each day to meet electricity needs. And that carries not just a financial cost, but a climate burden. Those two pressures are precisely why Saudi Arabia is investing in renewable energy. The thinking is that by switching to solar and wind power, the kingdom can free up more oil to export. This boosts petrodollar revenues and slashes the kingdom's scope 2 emissions simultaneously. It is a win-win. This is where green finance comes into focus, and not just in Saudi Arabia but in the broader Middle East region. One way that countries finance their energy transitions is through issuing green bonds. And here, Saudi Arabia has fallen behind its neighbour, the UAE. In 2024, the Emirates issued $7.4 billion in green bonds, the highest in the region, compared to $5.6 billion from Saudi Arabia, according to S&P Global Ratings. Yet when it comes to scale, Saudi Arabia is aiming far higher. It plans to build 130 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2030, nearly 10 times the UAE's 14-gigawatt target. Some may view this as a reputational play; an attempt to present Saudi Arabia as more than just an oil state. But that overlooks the economic logic behind it. This is not about walking away from fossil fuels. It is about risk management. By investing in clean energy, the kingdom is hedging against a future where oil may lose value. It is not a leap of faith. It is a calculated move to use current oil revenues to maintain relevance in a changing global energy system. That logic is reflected in the Acwa Power deal. It is not a green revolution, but it marks a shift in posture. Saudi Arabia is no longer experimenting at the edges of clean energy; it is now building at industrial scale. Oil will remain central to the Saudi economy for years, but Riyadh is ensuring that when the world moves on, it will have more than crude to offer.

How everyone benefits from the UAE's growing non-oil economy
For many people, midway through the year is a good time to take stock, review progress and plan for the future. The same is true for countries and economies, making this week's news that Abu Dhabi's non-oil foreign trade in the first half of this year jumped 34.7 per cent annually to Dh195.4 billion ($53.2 billion) significant. As the emirate's non-oil economy continues to expand amid diversification drives and government initiatives, these latest figures reveal that a thriving, post-hydrocarbons UAE is no longer about near-future speculation; it is unfolding now. The reasons behind this are varied but they are not only of national interest – they have global relevance too. One important driver of the UAE's flourishing non-oil trade is the country's economic relationships with an expanding list of partner states. By signing new trade deals, such as the more than two dozen Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements (Cepas) struck in recent years, the Emirates is opening new markets, boosting trade and investment flows, and removing tariffs. The UAE's growing domestic manufacturing base also plays an important role in building up the non-oil economy; in 2023 alone, Abu Dhabi's industrial sector contributed to 16.5 per cent to the emirate's non-oil gross domestic product and represented 51.3 per cent of the UAE's manufacturing sector. Similarly, the UAE's growing relevance as an AI and technology hub gives it a critical role in the 21st-century global economy. Research from PricewaterhouseCoopers, one of the world's largest professional services companies, predicts that AI alone will contribute close to 14 per cent of the UAE's GDP by 2030. This aligns with the country's National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, which aims to have the technology contribute 20 per cent to non-oil GDP by 2031. None of this is to suggest that energy is taking a back seat, rather that the focus has changed. Energy is the engine of economic growth and hydrocarbons globally continue to play a vital role. Entities like XRG and the Emirates Nuclear Energy Company are leading the drive to ensure energy demands are met and sources are diversified. But the country is also investing billions in renewable energy projects and technologies. Although the focus so far has largely been on reducing the country's carbon footprint and ensuring a sustainable supply of domestic power in the future, the UAE looks set to become an important exporter of green energy. The country's National Hydrogen Strategy, for example, has the goal of becoming a top 10 global producer and supplier of low-emission hydrogen by 2031. None of these developments came to fruition overnight. They have required significant strategising, infrastructural investment and technical know-how All of the above require solid infrastructure, technical innovation and skilled people. This is certainly good news for the UAE because the country's commitment to developing these resources will not only boost its non-oil trade, it will also benefit citizens and residents. A recent train journey from Dubai to Fujairah taken by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, showed how the Etihad Rail project will not only be critical in economic terms by boosting logistics, connectivity and supply chains, it will improve the quality of life for those who live here. Job creation, more foreign direct investment and local supply chains for clean energy technologies will be important and beneficial consequences of the UAE's non-oil economy. None of these developments came to fruition overnight. They have required significant strategising, infrastructural investment and technical know-how. That takes years of planning but we are now seeing the fruits of that long-term vision. Success in driving the UAE's non-oil economy – alongside other important sectors such as tourism and financial services – shows that the country has been prescient in future proofing for uncertain times.

Cruises cheaper than flights? Why UAE residents are opting for sea travel
Cruise holidays are becoming popular with UAE travellers over this summer and beyond. While some chose unique experiences, others opt for ultra-luxurious, all-inclusive packages, which allow them to have a more intimate holiday. 'During the summer, we are seeing many families from the UAE and GCC region opting for cruise holidays, mostly in Europe, Far East and Caribbean,' said Mohamed Kasim from Akbar Travels. 'Most of the people from the region opt for cruises lasting between seven and ten days and it is almost always booked by families, not people who are single.' He said that vessels that offer distinct entertainment options are more popular than others. 'Cruises like Icon of the Seas and Utopia of the Seas of Royal Caribbean have been extremely popular this season,' he said. The former cruise boasts of one of the largest waterparks at sea while the latter tends to be a more budget-friendly option. A spokesperson for Celestyal cruises, which homeported out of Abu Dhabi and Doha for the first time from December 2024 to March this year said that the demand had far exceeded their expectation from the region. 'We had set an occupancy target of 60 per cent,' said Janet Parton, regional Vice President of Business Development at the company. 'However, we were completely full on the majority of our cruises. So the response has been phenomenal and we are already getting bookings for our next season.' She added that however, the GCC region were a 'late booking' market, with many choosing to book at the last minute Luxury cruises Among cruise holidays, the luxury cruises vertical is one that is seeing an increase in demand. According to Lakshmi Durai, CEO of CruiseXplore, there are several reasons why people prefer luxury cruises. 'People travel a lot, and they are always looking for something unique and different,' she said. 'Luxury cruises have smaller ships which allow them to visit destinations that larger cruise ships may not be able to navigate. They are very boutique and the travellers are pampered. There are some cruises that offer very unique experience.' In this year's State of the Cruise Industry report by Cruise Lines International Association, the luxury cruise travel market has tripled globally since 2010. Saleh Mohamed from Elevate Cruises explained why people prefer luxury cruises. 'They come in smaller sizes with lesser number of people and all amenities inclusive,' he said. 'Last year, we handled the Tauck cruise which was like a small yacht of 160 passengers but with a crew of almost 200 people to give personalised care for passengers. There were about 15 travel experts to accompany people during their excursions. So luxury cruise liners do out-of-the-box, unique experiences with an incredible level of service.' Earlier this year, Saud Hareb Almheiri, Cruise Tourism & Yachting Lead, Dubai Department of Economy, and Tourism (DET) told Khaleej Times during the Arabian Travel Mart that luxury cruises were 'a growing trend' both globally and locally. 'People are realising that if they go on a luxury cruise, it gives them a way to experience unique onshore excursions or different ports,' he said. 'On a normal cruise ship, there are sometimes more than 6,000 guests which means that people have to queue up to use the amenities. On luxury cruises, people wouldn't have to wait in queues.' Value for money According to Saud, value for money has been the 'foundation' of cruising. 'People are able to visit so many destinations within a short period of time without having to get on a plane and without having to unpack and pack multiple times,' he said. 'People will pay a premium for just that experience.' Lakshmi added that cruises are more affordable as compared to land holidays. 'The cruise package has a lot of inclusions,' she said. 'WiFi, all meals, entertainment on board, unique destinations and more. If you break it down to a per night rate, a similar land vacation will cost much more than a cruise. That is one of the reasons why it is becoming more popular.' Experiential cruises One cruise that has seen a lot of interest from the region is the Hurtigruten experiential cruise in Norway — a 130-year-old delivery service that used to get produce and post to the north of the country. Hurtigruten was converted into a cruise experience and has become popular for the experience it offers. 'We have small ships accommodating up to 500 people that run along the coast of Norway throughout the year,' said Carla Hines. 'We work with local suppliers, pick up fresh fish and vegetables from certain ports and engage with the local community. The food on the cruise is completely Norwegian and freshly cooked and the waste on the ship is composted. We are very sustainable. Depending on the season, we have different activities like hustle sledging, kayaking and hiking.' Lakshmi added that other popular experience cruises included cruises to the Arctic circle and Antartica. 'Some of these are ice breaker cruises that sail into poles,' she said. 'Roughly about 100 people are on these cruises, and they have expedition experts on the ship who take the guests out into the poles to explore.' Saleh added that the newly launched Aroya Cruise from Saudi Arabia was also gaining popularity. With halal food, prayer rooms and shisha decks, he explained that the cruise targeted a wide Muslim audience.
