Paralympic gold medallist aiming to recapture love for racing in London Marathon
A Paralympic gold medallist from the Scottish Borders has said she is aiming to recapture her love for racing by taking part in the London Marathon.
Samantha Kinghorn secured gold in the T53 100m in the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris, as well as four silver medals in the 400m, 800m, 1500m and 4x100m universal relay.
However, the 29-year-old said she is 'not a naturally competitive person' and that she puts herself under 'too much pressure'.
The Borders athlete is hoping Sunday's London marathon can recover her love for racing.
She said: 'I love the training, but I put myself under too much pressure when it comes to racing.
'I get so nervous before races – it's like my central nervous system is under attack.
'I lost the enjoyment in competing.
'This is about getting that enjoyment back – and I think London is the perfect place to do it.'
Samantha married her partner of six years, Callum, in January at Broxmouth in Dunbar.
Despite starting late due to her honeymoon in the Maldives, she has continued her training ahead of the 26 mile race – and has even had a helping hand from her husband.
She added: 'I love training, so starting late has stressed me out.
'Sometimes as an athlete, it's hard to admit you need time off.
'I'm still training twice a day, six days a week – but I needed a break.
'Getting married and being away for three weeks helped me re-evaluate and get my priorities in order.
'He's been helping me train for the marathon, which has been a great way to spend time together.
'I dropped him when he was on the bike the other day – and that made me feel like I might be ready.'

McIlroy insists patience will be key to master ‘impossible' Oakmont course
Rory McIlroy is leaving no stone unturned in his bid to overcome an 'impossible' Oakmont course and prosper at the US Open. McIlroy is looking to shake off a hangover from his US Masters triumph in April, where he completed his 11-year quest for a career grand slam of winning all four majors. That will not be easy at the unforgiving Oakmont Country Club in Pittsburgh, characterised by notoriously thick rough, especially as the 36-year-old is battling driver issues. He missed the cut when the US Open was last played here in 2016, but has been putting in the work ahead of Thursday's first round. He played at the course on a scouting mission last Monday, but probably wishes he had not bothered, as he shot an 81, while he has also been watching videos of Dustin Johnson's win here nine years ago. 'I'm glad we have spotters up there because I played last Monday just in Druck's (member Stanley Druckenmiller) outing, and you hit a ball off the fairway and you were looking for a good couple of minutes just to find it,' he said. 'It's very penal if you miss. Sometimes it's penal if you don't miss. But the person with the most patience and the best attitude this week is the one that's going to win. 'There's definitely been a little bit of rain since I played. Last Monday felt impossible. I birdied the last two holes for 81. It felt pretty good. It didn't feel like I played that bad. 'It's much more benign right now than it was that Monday. They had the pins in dicey locations, and greens were running fast. It was nearly impossible. 'If you put it in the fairway, it's certainly playable. But then you just have to think about leaving your ball below the hole and just trying to make as many pars as you can. 'You get yourself in the way of a few birdies, that's a bonus.' The club's own website labels it 'The Ultimate Examination of Championship Golf', but it is fair to say other descriptions of Oakmont have not been so flattering. Bryson DeChambeau, who pipped McIlroy to the title last year, called it the 'toughest golf course in the world right now'. 'You have to hit the fairways, you have to hit greens, and you have to two-putt, worst-case scenario,' he said. 'When you've got those putts inside 10 feet, you've got to make them. It's a great test of golf. 'I think everyone knows it's the toughest golf course in the world right now.' World number three Xander Schauffele thinks fans will get pleasure from seeing the top stars suffer. 'I don't think people turn the TV on to watch some of the guys just hit like a 200-yard shot on the green, you know what I mean?' Schauffele said. 'I think they turn on the US Open to see a guy shooting eight over and suffer. That's part of the enjoyment of playing in the US Open for viewers.' Doig ‘bursting with pride' after ending long wait for Scotland debut
Josh Doig was 'bursting with pride' to make his long-awaited Scotland debut in the 4-0 friendly win over Liechtenstein. The Sassuolo left-back was first named in a squad in September 2022 but has had to bide his time amid competition from Andy Robertson, Kieran Tierney and Greg Taylor. The former Hibernian defender's big moment came just before the hour mark in Vaduz on Monday evening. 'I've been in a few squads now, so I'm just absolutely delighted to get on the pitch, and obviously to get a win as well, it's a good feeling,' the 23-year-old told BBC Scotland. 'After half-time, I got the shout that something like that was going to be going on, so I was bursting with pride when I got on the pitch. You've got a job to do, so you have to focus on that first, but I was absolutely delighted.' Doig made a big impact with an enterprising display and came close to a debut goal when his shot was turned past the post. 'It was a bit of a hundred miles per hour when I came on, but I was just so delighted to actually get on the pitch,' he said. 'Obviously, I've been on a lot of squads, but at the same time, it's not a bad thing. It's an absolute honour just to be picked, to be playing alongside some of the guys on the pitch, world-class players. 'I'm just absolutely delighted to get on and just bursting with pride for me and my family.' Doig has been happy to learn from his rivals for a place in the team. 'Obviously, in my position, you've probably got some of the best two left-backs in the world at the moment, so it can't not help me being around them and being in that environment,' he said. 'It's obviously where you want to be at the end of the day.' The landmark moment capped a successful season for the former Hellas Verona player, who played a key role in Sassuolo's Serie B title triumph. 'It's been a long season, a lot of ups and downs, but I'm obviously delighted to get promoted and this is just the icing on the cake to get my debut as well,' he said. 'It's been a good season all round. 'I love it there, absolutely love it. It's such a nice part of the world where I stay, in Modena. Obviously I was in Verona before, it's just two of the most beautiful places you could ask for. 'I couldn't be happier, I'm really happy with where I am in my life right now and I'm looking forward to another season in Italy.' Partick Thistle sporting director suffers serious injury swimming in Mauritius
Partick Thistle sporting director Ian Barraclough is in hospital in Mauritius after suffering serious injury while on holiday. The Championship club has revealed that Barraclough has 'extensive injuries', including broken bones in his neck and back after what they say was a swimming accident. The 54-year-old underwent immediate surgery and is now in a period of recovery but will not be able to return to Scotland for several weeks. In a statement released on the club's website, Barraclough, who joined the club in April, said: 'On behalf of myself, my wife, my children and my wider family I would like to thank the surgeons and staff at the Wellkin Hospital, Mauritius for their exceptional care. 'I would also like to thank club chairman Richard Beastall and all of the team at Partick Thistle for their support and well wishes. 'In my short space of time I have already felt the close bond and drive from staff, players, fans and volunteers that make Thistle what it is.' 'I'm looking forward to returning as quickly as possible and get back to that unique and special feeling that really marks Thistle out as a football club with a passion to be different and an ambition to succeed.' 'It is one that I am very proud to be a part of.' Club chairman Richard Beastall said: 'It was a harrowing time for Ian and his family immediately after the accident however things are beginning to settle now. 'He suffered broken bones in both his neck and back but thankfully the speed in which he was operated on, and the care that was taken pre-operation, has helped the situation significantly.' 'Ian has only been at the club for a short time however he has impressed everyone with his professionalism and drive. Everyone at The Wyre Stadium at Firhill wishes Ian a quick and full recovery.' 'We have contingency measures in place to cope with his absence.
