Chocolate factory quietly opens in the heart of Wellington

Yahoo11 hours ago
A new chocolate factory has quietly opened its doors in Wellington, with the help of an 18-year-old.
Ruxstons Chocolate is based on Wellington High Street and is now producing its own chocolate in-house after a nine-week build inside the shop.
Imogen Rossiter-Slade, head of new product development, said: "We already sell a lot of chocolate, but by making it ourselves, we can be more creative, quicker to respond to ideas, and more confident in the quality."
She is taking a gap year before starting medical school in September, and currently leads flavour creation and design at the company.
Imogen added: "It is a bit of an unusual role for someone my age, but being a keen chemistry student, I found I was very suited to this role."
The new factory was kept under wraps during its construction.
The project was led by Fraser Purdey, with Amy Porter handling much of the practical work, and new team members Anna Sumska and Kate McVicar assisting with final preparations.
A soft launch took place on the evening of Saturday, July 5, attended by friends, family, and long-time customers.
Imogen said: "Most of them had no idea we'd been working on it, so it was a great moment to finally reveal it."
The team believes the new factory will help expand both the shop and their online business.
She added: "We are a very fast-paced company and ambitious, so this factory will further help us develop our own brand and really help us grow."

Oxford High Street in top three UK cities for fewest empty shops

A new study has revealed Oxford High Street has the third fewest empty shops of all major UK cities. A report from Centre For Cities revealed Oxford has a vacancy rate of just 9 per cent this year, in a ranking of 62 major city centre high streets in the UK. It came behind London and Cambridge for having the fewest number of empty shops, which had vacancy rates of 7.4 and 8.5 per cent respectively. Authors of the report said: "The performance of the Great British high street is seen as a political bellwether, creating a very visual symbol of the success of an area. "While it has certainly come under pressure from the rise of out-of-town retail, and more recently online shopping, in some centres it is still performing well." READ MORE: Oxford United lose in President's Cup final to Port FC In asking what drives the differences in high street performances between places like Oxford, where around one in 10 shops are empty, and those like Newport, where the number is more like one in five, researchers identified four key factors. The size of the catchment, both in terms of the size of the city and the number of competing shopping centres, made a difference, as did catchment incomes. The geography of the economy, including where it clusters and how well it performs, and the size of the visitor economy were also found to impact the high street. Read the full report at

UK launches £500M package to support diverse, underrepresented investors and founders

The British Business Bank, owned by the UK government, is creating a £500 million (around $674 million) economic package to help support diverse and underrepresented fund managers and founders in the country. Fifty million pounds will be set aside for female-led venture funds, which means the BBB has now committed at least £100 million (around $135 million) to supporting female-led ventures and the government's Invest in Women Taskforce. Meanwhile, £400 million (around $539 million) will go to backing more diverse fund managers and supporting early-stage companies, as well as helping to boost the talent pipeline to provide those from disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity to become investors. The package begins deployment in 2026. 'The initiative announced today aims to reduce the significant gap in venture capital investment for underrepresented founders and investors,' the BBB said in a press release announcing the investment last week. 'It will target at least 50% of investment going to female fund managers.' It comes as the U.K. continues its push to attract and sustain talent to its venture ecosystem. The press release states that 'breaking down barriers to opportunity will help drive growth as part of the government's Plan for Change,' which encompasses various strategies to help drive economic growth in the country. For women and people of color, the UK venture landscape can often be as disheartening as it is in the U.S. Around 13% of venture teams in the UK have women at a senior level, while dismal amounts of venture funding goes to minorities (less than 2% for Black founders as of a 2023 report, and 2 pence (around 3 cents) for every £1 ($1.35) invested goes to women.
