Proteas crushed by Black Caps again in T20 tri-series battle

The Citizen22-07-2025
New Zealand chased down their target with 25 balls to spare.
South Africa were outplayed on Tuesday, falling in a convincing seven-wicket defeat to New Zealand in their T20 International tri-series match in Harare.
Set a target of 135 runs to win, the Black Caps reached 135/3 with more than four overs to spare to remain unbeaten, stretching their lead at the top of the tri-series standings.
While the Proteas had already qualified for this weekend's final, they were handed their second defeat of the series against New Zealand.
The Black Caps were anchored by opening batter Tim Seifert who made an unbeaten 66 off 48 deliveries – his 11th T20 International half-century – as he paved the way to his team's commanding win.
Left-arm spinner Senuran Muthusamy was the best of the SA bowlers, who struggled to hit their straps, taking 2/24 from his four overs.
Proteas innings
After losing the toss and being sent in to bat, South Africa had been strangled in the early stages of their innings, and they were left flailing at 38/2 after eight overs.
And though they managed to pick up the run-rate, they lost regular wickets and failed to gain real momentum.
However, though the rest of the top-order were unable to build on their starts, opener Reeza Hendricks stood firm for most of the innings, contributing 41 runs off 37 deliveries, while middle-order batter George Linde hit 23 not out.
They did not receive sufficient support, however, and the Proteas were restricted to 134/8 by a Black Caps attack which was led by fast bowler Adam Milne (2/21), spinner Mitchell Santner (2/26) and seamer Jacob Duffy (2/33) who took two wickets each.
South Africa will meet New Zealand again in the T20 International tri-series final in Harare on Saturday.

Proteas Test captain Temba Bavuma is in line for the major awards at Emperors Palace on Thursday evening. Picture: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix TEMBA Bavuma is set to complete a year of huge achievement when the Cricket SA Awards will be held at Emperors Palace on Thursday evening. Bavuma had an outstanding year both as leader and player. Although the Proteas' epic World Test Championship final victory over Australia at Lord's last month does not fall within the judging period - 1 May 2024 to 30 April 2025 - Bavuma was still a standout performer and is the favourite to be crowned SA Cricketer of the Year, Test Cricketer of the Year and Fan's Player of the Year. He was splendid during the Proteas' march to the WTC Final with 609 runs at an average of 60.90, which included two centuries against Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Bavuma also boasts a 100% captaincy record with the Proteas having won series against West Indies, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan under his leadership. It will be the first time that Bavuma could be honoured with the highest prize in South African cricket, following in the footsteps of legends such as Graeme Smith, Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, Makhaya Ntini and Kagiso Rabada. 🏆 Proteas Captain Temba Bavuma and his team brought the mace home in style! The big fast bowler snaring 36 wickets at 29.78 and in the process became the fifth South African bowler to join the 300-wicket club in Tests. His strike rate of 39.2, is the best among all the world's bowlers who have achieved this milestone. Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj has also been nominated in both categories along with batter Ryan Rickleton. Maharaj was even more prolific than Rabada, claiming 40 Test wickets at 20.57, while Rickelton enjoyed a stellar breakout season. After being promoted to open the innings, the left-hander enjoyed a spectacular home summer with maiden Test century against Sri Lanka in Gqeberha before striking a 'big-daddy hundred' with a career-best 259 in the New Year Test against Pakistan at Newlands. Proteas wicket-keeper Kyle Verreynne, who would go on to hit the winning runs in the WTC Final at Lord's, has also been nominated in the Test Cricketer of the Year category. Rassie Erasmus reveals big change to Springbok plans

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus and his management are renowned for their meticulous and carefully-considered planning for each and every part of the season. With the start of the Rugby Championship now just over two weeks away, Erasmus has interestingly revealed he called the team into camp earlier than was initially planned, perhaps indicating that he was not entirely satisfied with what took place during the July internationals. Erasmus admitted that this week's training camp was not originally part of their schedule, but he said it would benefit the team on several fronts. 'These two weeks of camp will give us time to align as coaches, as well as on the conditioning aspects for the players and to take stock from a medical perspective, so it's important in assisting us to get to where we want to be against three good countries in the series.' The Springboks are currently on a four-match winning run so far this season following victories against the Barbarians and an Incoming Series clean-sweep against Italy and Georgia. 'We would have eight weeks of proper preparation before we take the field in the Rugby Championship, and we are pleased with the physicality that Italy and Georgia brought against us in the last few weeks,' Erasmus did clarify. 'We have another three weeks to prepare for the matches against Australia, so we'll be working hard on the training field in the next few weeks.' The Bok coach added: 'We always knew that our first few matches would not be as tough as the Rugby Championship, even though the opposition was competitive and physical, but we are now going up against teams with solid game plans and a different intensity. 'Australia would have also come off the British & Irish Lions Series by the time we face them, so it will be a challenging tournament.' Rugby Championship fixtures: 16 August: SA v Australia – Ellis Park, Johannesburg (17:10) 23 August: SA v Australia – DHL Stadium, Cape Town (17:10) 6 September: New Zealand v SA – Eden Park, Auckland (09:05) 13 September: New Zealand v SA – Sky Stadium, Wellington (09:05) 27 September: SA v Argentina – Kings Park, Durban (17:10) 4 October: Argentina v SA – Allianz Stadium, Twickenham, London (15:00) Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
