
Royal Air Force pilot able to return to flying jets after ‘revolutionary' cancer scan
Scientists have come up with a new scanning technique for blood cancer patients, which involves giving patients a whole-body MRI scan that can detect minuscule amounts of myeloma, also known as minimal residual disease.
Usual tests include blood tests and bone marrow biopsies, CT scans and X-rays and may not show signs of cancer.
Experts said that the scanning technique can provide an important insight into how well patients are responding to treatment and whether they might relapse.
Air Vice-Marshal Fin Monahan, chief fire officer for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, was diagnosed with myeloma in 2009 while serving in the RAF.
He has since relapsed twice, but thanks to whole-body MRI scans, his cancer was detected much earlier than would have been possible with a traditional CT scan.
Vice-Marshal Fin described how the scanning technique 'extended his life' and enabled him to 'continue serving' the country.
Myeloma is a type of blood cancer that develops from plasma cells in the bone marrow, and according to Myeloma UK, around 6,200 people are diagnosed with the disease each year. According to the charity, there are around 33,000 people in the UK living with Myeloma at any one time.
The condition is sometimes called multiple myeloma because it affects more than one part of the body.
The disease is not considered curable, but treatment can control it.
Researchers at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and The Institute of Cancer Research, London, tracked 70 myeloma patients who were having a stem cell transplant.
They were all given a whole-body MRI before and after the treatment.
Professor Martin Kaiser, consultant haematologist at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and professor in molecular haematology at The Institute of Cancer Research, London, said: 'Access to this gold-standard precision imaging with whole-body MRI has revolutionised care for myeloma patients.'
'As the treatment options for myeloma increase and factors such as disease distribution across the body are increasingly understood as important to treatment response, the relevance of the whole-body MRI for personalising treatment will only increase over time.'
'I returned to flying jets'
Vice-marshal Fin, father of three, 57, said after being given the scan and treatment said he lived: 'With the constant threat of relapse, myeloma patients are in a long-term mental battle with this insidious disease.'
However, he said being part of the study allowed his cancer to be closely watched and resulted in him being treated sooner than he would have under normal care options.
He said: 'This not only extended my life but after diagnosis, I returned to flying jets and to active operational duties.
'I would eventually not be allowed to fly on medical grounds due to myeloma but paved the way to establishing the first training programme of Ukrainian forces in 2015 and I was called upon to run Nato air operations after the invasion of Ukraine.
'This cutting-edge treatment not only extended my life but allowed me to continue serving my country.'
Writing in the Blood Cancer Journal, experts said that one in three patients had signs of residual disease on whole-body MRI after treatment – which can be given to patients without the use of radiation.
Overall survival was also significantly shorter in those with positive MRI findings.
The Royal Marsden has already adopted the the whole-body imagine technique and it could help shape cancer care for patients around the country in the future.
Study chief investigator, Professor Christina Messiou, consultant radiologist at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, and professor in imaging for personalised oncology at The Institute of Cancer Research, said: 'This study shows that whole-body MRI gives us valuable information about how well the myeloma has responded to treatment that other tests may miss.
'It's exciting that we now have a standardised, non-invasive imaging method that can be used across cancer centres.
'Whole-body MRI doesn't involve radiation or intravenous injections, which is important for patients who may require lifelong monitoring.
'This is an important step towards smarter and kinder precision diagnostics for patients with cancer'

The genetic factor that could impact a child's future weight, according to experts
A mother's genes could play a role in determining a child's future weight – more so than a father's. Researchers at University College London (UCL) investigated how a parent's weight and genes influence their children's weight and diet from birth to age 17. To make the comparison, researchers used genetic and health data of 2,621 UK families in the Millennium Cohort Study, a UK birth cohort study of individuals born in 2001-2002. The study, published in the journal PLOS Genetics, looked at the BMI of parents and the birthweight of their children. They also looked at the child's diet at ages three, five, seven, 11, 14, and 17. Children's diets were assessed through self-reported records of how often and how much they consumed different food groups, including fruit, vegetables, fast food, and sugary drinks. Researchers then separated the direct effects of inherited genes from the indirect effects of genes that were not inherited. Study authors explained that non-inherited genes can still influence children's outcomes by influencing the development environment, such as conditions in the womb and parenting practices, as these are shaped by parents' genetics. Analysis revealed that while both parents' genetics influence a child's BMI, a mother's BMI continued to affect the child's weight beyond direct genetic inheritance. Researchers suggest this means genetic nurture, where a parent's genes shape the environment they create for their child, might be a big factor in a child's weight. This could be the case if a mother's genes influence her own weight, eating habits, or behaviours during pregnancy, which in turn can affect the child's development and long-term health. Dr Liam Wright, the study's lead author, said: ' Mothers ' genetics appear to play an important role in influencing their child's weight over and above the child's genetics. 'In addition to the genes mums directly pass on, our findings suggest that maternal genetics are instrumental in shaping the environment in which the child develops, therefore indirectly influencing the child's BMI too.' Almost a third of children aged two to 15 were considered to be obese or overweight in 2024, according to NHS data. However, researchers acknowledge BMI is not the most accurate way of measuring body fat, particularly among children, and so supplemented their analysis with several other adiposity-related measures, including fat mass. Dr Wright added: 'This isn't about blaming mothers, rather, supporting families to make a meaningful difference to children's long-term health. Targeted interventions to reduce maternal BMI, particularly during pregnancy, could reduce the intergenerational impacts of obesity."

The struggle to access weight-loss jabs from NHS
Thousands of obese patients in England are unable to access the weight loss jab Mounjaro due to a 'postcode lottery' in NHS provision. Data obtained by Sky News reveals only 8 of 42 NHS Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) in England are currently able to provide the treatment, despite its intended availability from 23 June. Doctors warn patients are being 'set up for failure', with claims that NHS England has only funded treatment for a fraction of the 97,500 patients NICE calculated should be treated in the first year. NHS England stated it has 'fully supported the rollout', issuing guidance and providing funding to ICBs in March to cover treatment costs and support services. Concerns also exist regarding post-treatment support, with NICE stressing the need for structured follow-up for NHS patients to prevent weight regain, a service not available to the 1.5 million private users.

Psychedelics have gone mainstream – don't buy into it
It's hardly unusual for a radio station to invite the listener to turn on and tune in, but Radio 4 has been encouraging us to drop out too. All throughout this week and next, Tim Hayward is taking The Trip (Radio 4, Mon-Fri; all episodes on BBC Sounds), a deep dive into the world of psychedelics, while on Tuesday night Ed Prideaux was Trip Shocked (Radio 4, Tues), which covered much of the same territory. A quick Google of the word ' psychedelics ' tells you why there is such a glut of interest. The first three headlines: 'Can psychedelic therapy go mainstream?', 'Psychedelic medicine could revolutionise how we treat mental illness' and 'Psychedelics may offer hope for treatment of eating disorders.' The next few hundred headlines are similar. The psychedelics are coming for your mental health. Psychedelics, as Prideaux said, have had a 'reputational glow-up' in recent years, transforming in the public mind from bogeyman life-destroyers favoured by opt-out beatniks to miracle drugs for all and any mental health conditions. Prideaux – who took LSD on four occasions 10 years ago when he was 17 and, among the enjoyable moments, suffered from violent stomach pains and HPPD (hallucinogen persisting perception disorder) – is both surprised at the surge in popularity of psychedelics and concerned about their spread as a medical cure-all. It hardly needs stating that Prideaux found that not nearly enough research or clinical trials have been done around the medical use of the drugs – the question is, why then are they being pushed so aggressively towards the mental health sector? The answer was depressingly obvious. In the first quarter of 2025, more than $350m was invested in psychedelic biotech companies. Like the opiate industry before it, the psychedelic lobby in the US has been evangelical about promoting its products, roping in veterans suffering from PTSD (as they did with opioids and veterans living with pain). Side-effects, malpractice and even deaths have been unreported or brushed under the carpet as a booming new market seeks to take advantage of a sea change in public and political opinion (one of those hundreds of headlines reads: 'How MAGA learnt to love psychedelics'). Instead there exists a mushy atmosphere of woowoo, with phrases such as 'net-zero trauma' and 'inner healer' bandied around among the easy-win headlines about magic mushrooms curing depression. They'll change your life, man. Well, yes, quite possibly, but could we have a few more double-blind clinical trials first? Prideaux did not deny that psychedelics seem to work incredibly well, and incredibly quickly, for some people suffering from a broad spectrum of mental health conditions. Hayward's series, meanwhile, uncovered another depressing truth – in the 'pre-prohibition era of psychedelics', in the early to mid-20th century, research was booming, but the whole industry was driven underground when the societal winds changed in the 1960s. Only now are we starting to scratch at the surface of what psychedelics might be capable of. Hayward wanted, in particular, to find out what was going on in a brain altered by psychedelic drugs, which led to some extremely entertaining segments about drug users chatting to superintelligent gnomes and the idea that the key to understanding human consciousness lies in the venom gland of the Colorado River toad. Yet while both programmes hinted that humanity is on the cusp of unlocking all sorts of exciting things via the substances that led to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, the overall effect was a little dispiriting. Political fear brought about the suppression of research into psychedelics more than half a century ago, and now the allure of private financial gain is getting that research moving again. I lost count of the amount of times a neuroscientist ended a sentence with 'but we just don't know enough yet' or 'but the evidence isn't here yet'. 'Journalists look for simple narratives,' said one researcher to Prideaux. I tried looking for one, but these trips messed with my mind. More research is needed.
