New museum hopes to tell heritage of Irish in the British Army

BBC News05-03-2025

A new museum hoping to tell the 350-year history of Irish soldiers and their families in the British Army has been awarded £13.6 million from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.UNTOLD: The Museum has unveiled plans to create state-of-the-art centres across two sites in Belfast and Enniskillen. The Belfast galleries are set to open in the summer of 2027 in the restored listed linen warehouse at 28 Bedford Street in Belfast. A second phase will focus on redeveloping the existing galleries at Enniskillen Castle.
Artefacts which are currently housed across six individual collections, including two Victoria Crosses, will now be consolidated as part of the project. These include the Inniskillings Museum, Royal Irish Fusiliers Museum, Royal Ulster Rifles Museum, Royal Irish Regiment Museum, Collections and Archives of the Royal Irish Regiment, and Collections and Archives of the North Irish Horse.Disbanded regiments from what is now the Republic of Ireland will also be included in the story.Announcing the Heritage Fund support, Hugh Crossey, chairman of UNTOLD: The Museum said it would "hopefully inspire people to see things differently and make meaningful connections across generations"."Education will be at the heart of all the exhibitions, offering our visitors the chance to explore the lives of the Irish men and women who rose above divisions of class, politics and religion and overcame extremes of hardship to make an indelible mark on our history," he said.
'Explore what we have in common'
Dr Laura Patrick, the regimental heritage officer of the Royal Irish Regiment, said she and her colleagues wanted to "address a difficult conversation" and look at the "human experiences behind the often facelessness of the British Army"."What did the soldiers sign up for, why did they sign up, what did they do, and what did they come home to because that wasn't always the most pleasant experience for a lot of them especially in the south," Dr Patrick said."We want to create a space with people for people – a safe space for them to come and debate and explore this fascinating and difficult story."It's just about using that rather unique heritage to explore what we have in common as opposed to what separates us for a change which is always an issue here in Northern Ireland. "It's about education and it's about preserving that heritage for future generations."
The museum's main objective is to encourage conversations and "make a new and significant social contribution by healing divisions within the community and fostering intra- and inter-community bonds"."Though this is an all-island story, historically, not all communities engage with this shared heritage," a museum spokesperson said.

Sabrina Carpenter fans convinced she's taking aim at ex Barry Keoghan in new song

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Fans are certain that Sabrina Carpenter wrote a Taylor Swift-level savage song about her ex Barry Keoghan. The pop diva, 26, announced her new single – titled Manchild – on Tuesday evening via an Instagram post. Highly anticipated by fans of Sabrina Carpenter and messy situationships alike, the song is set to drop on Thursday. The singer shared a vintage-looking teaser video – in which she can be seen wearing daisy dukes, platform shoes, and a tied-up white shirt – hinting at the new song. She captioned the post: 'This one's about you!!' along with details about the song's release. Fans were quick to speculate that the new song is about Barry Keoghan, who Sabrina started dating in December 2023 before breaking up around a year later. Rumours of infidelity and hard partying swirled around the Irish actor in the wake of the split, though nothing was ever confirmed. One fan commented on the post: 'And we know who you are talking about diva'. The official account for the dating app grindr wrote: 'We all thought of him didn't we'. Another added: 'DRAG HIM BABE WE CAN'T WAIT.' One fan chimed in: 'You better clock that Barry!' The pair's much-discussed relationship included music videos, countless break-up rumours, and several social media interactions – and it seems fans are still getting new content even nearly a year later. The pair broke the internet when Barry starred in Sabrina's music video for Please Please Please as the love interest, something she later used against him in an on-stage dig. Performing in Barry's hometown of Dublin, Ireland, back in March, Sabrina spoke to the crowd at Dublin's 3Arena, saying that Irish boys are 'hard work,' drawing a knowing laugh from the crowd. More Trending The dig came before the pop star launched into Please Please Please, which is also widely believed to have been written about her relationship with Barry. One source previously claimed to The Sun that Sabrina and Barry broke up because she was 'fed up' with Barry's behaviour when drunk. Later, unconfirmed rumours that Barry may have been unfaithful to Sabrina were rampant, with the actor going online in December 2024 to plead with disgruntled fans to stop 'showing up at his Granny's door.' Now, it seems – much to the delight of fans – that the drama is still not over, and Sabrina will make sure she gets the last word. Got a story? Katherine Ryan pregnant with fourth child just months after cancer diagnosis

Katherine Ryan is reportedly expecting baby number four, just months after her shock cancer diagnosis. The 41-year-old announced in March that she had been told she had melanoma for the second time in the last 20 years. Hello! reports that she is now expecting her fourth child with long-time partner Bobby Koostra. She has not confirmed the news on her own social media platforms. Katherine has three children, including son Fred, three, and daughter Fenna, two, with Bobby, as well as 15-year-old Violet from her previous relationship. Just two months ago, she revealed that after going to visit her GP over a mole on her arm she had been diagnosed 'deadly' skin cancer. This was the second time Katherine had faced a diagnosis like this, the first time being when she was younger and at university. Speaking about her experience, the Duchess star shared: 'The mole kept changing, I know a lot about melanoma, I had melanoma as a very young woman – aged 21 – on my leg, I've spoken about that before. 'It was flat, it wasn't that big but it was melanoma. It is a deadly form of skin cancer and it does spread quickly.' The mole was surgically removed, which the comedian showed off on her Instagram story with a white dressing plaster over the area. Late last year, the star also revealed she had suffered 'three miscarriages in five years' and discussed medical emergencies happening while she was on tour working around Europe. One miscarriage was in September of last year, while she was also on tour, saying it was 'difficult' at times. Speaking on her Telling Everybody Everything podcast, Katherine said: 'We lost another pregnancy in September at the beginning of the tour, which was fine, and then it was difficult, and then it became fine again. More Trending 'I'm totally fine about it now. And not to be shrewd, but I looked in the calendar and I thought, oh, we would be due to have that baby in March, and I thought, that's fine, I can do the Irish dates of my tour and land and I have a few specific dates off, I can make sure I have the baby on this specific day and then do the London dates of the Palladium with a small baby.' She added: 'I never find out at home, it's always a surprise and then I always have to have surgical intervention, meaning it does not resolve itself on its own. 'Some of the occasions we have had the products of conception tested to find out why we had a miscarriage. This time in September, I absolutely thought it was my fault because I was on tour.' Metro has reached out to Katherine's team for comment. This is a breaking news story, more to follow soon… Check back shortly for further updates.
