‘Hidden hands' behind the mining scandal: Jeffrey

'There are people who will immediately exploit the situation. I see PKR suddenly becoming like … they think the political landscape will change, that it will shift the people from one situation to the other,' Jeffrey told reporters when met at the StarSabah 9th Anniversary Ceremony at Sabah International Convention Centre, Tuesday. He was asked whether he believes the people will continue to support him amid the allegations of him receiving RM1.78 million linked to the controversy. Jeffrey also claimed there are hidden hands orchestrating the controversy from behind the scenes, describing the allegations as an elaborate entrapment scheme to destroy the government. 'I can see there is this hidden hand moving around and planning all this behind the scenes. 'To me, it looks like an entrapment. I mean, why suddenly we were the last group to be suddenly involved in the scandal?' he said. He said the timing and phased nature of the revelations point to a coordinated effort to destabilise the current State Government. 'Those who have interest in destroying the government and taking over, obviously they have something to do with that. This is not new, I mean it has been happening for many years, the same game has been played and I am no longer surprised,' he said. He said that he had been contacted by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) during the initial phase of investigations together with other implicated leaders. He was surprised when his name surfaced again in recent reports. 'Yes, I mean, the first round, everyone was called. So, we went to the MACC office to provide assistance. 'After that, we thought that's it because after that MACC never contacted us, never sent us letters, never. 'We thought nothing to do with us. Then suddenly, the news said this. So, we were surprised.' He also said he would lodge a police report regarding the allegations and consult with lawyers on potential legal action. Rather than weakening his political position, Jeffrey said the controversy only strengthened his resolve and political strategy. He acknowledged meeting the businessman at the centre of the controversy, Albert Tei, but that it was a routine business encounter. 'Because being a businessman they see everybody. That was how we came to know him,' he said. Asked about a photo and the date the photo was taken, Jeffrey said 'I was looking at the date, there was a date and it was on the same day or the next day after the parliamentary pre-council in Kuala Lumpur.' Jeffrey said the controversy would not derail upcoming plans, including a unity convention with PBS scheduled for July 12. Jeffrey also said StarSabah has submitted a wish list of seats for the coming election, though he acknowledged overlaps with other parties' requests. 'If possible, we hope for as many seats. But we know that there are other parties. MACC to develop ISO certification for crisis communication with Dept of Standards
CYBERJAYA: The role and responsibility of public relations practitioners are crucial in helping to disseminate and control a more accurate narrative to shape the public's rational and logical thinking. Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) strategic communications division (SCD) director Hisyam Mohd Yusoff said all parties, especially in the government sector, need to view this effort as a necessary change to be implemented collaboratively rather than working independently or in silos. "Communication crisis management is now seen as a critical necessity, and the SCD has taken the initiative to begin planning the development of an ISO Certification for Communication Crisis Management as part of the new MACC Strategic Plan starting in 2026. "The Department of Standards Malaysia (MSD) is regarded as an important agency to assist MACC in achieving this strategic plan, similar to the collaboration with MSD in granting ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation certification to the MACC Digital Forensic Laboratory last year," he said. Department director Wan Rukiman Wan Mamat also welcomed and committed to cooperating with MACC in developing this ISO standard. "MSD views MACC's proposal as timely and in line with current needs, which indeed require such planning to be established," he said. The SCD delegation, led by its Deputy Director Jules Rahman Ong, held discussions with MSD regarding the proposal for developing standards and accreditation in communication management at MSD's office in Cyberjaya today. Hisyam said the ISO Certification is also important to establish a communication crisis management standard that will be adopted by every government and private agency. He said MACC is also concerned about the level of rationality, thinking, and public perception, which are increasingly susceptible to misinformation and unhelpful news, prompting the idea and need to develop such a plan.

MACC detains three for false claims in Sabah and Selangor
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained three individuals in separate cases involving false claims in Sabah and Selangor. In Sabah, two businesspersons were arrested for allegedly submitting fraudulent claims under the Small and Medium Industry (SMI) Assistance Programme. The suspects, a man and a woman in their 50s, were detained at the Sabah MACC office while giving their statements. Investigations revealed the duo submitted false claims worth over RM3.6 million to the Department of Industrial Development and Research (DIDR) between 2022 and 2023. One claim involved the supply of retort machines and equipment worth over RM400,000, while the other covered MeSTI, My Food, and halal certification services valued at over RM3.2 million. Sabah MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy confirmed the arrests, stating the case is being probed under Sections 18 and 28(1)(c) of the MACC Act 2009. Both suspects were released on RM10,000 bail each after posting RM1,000 and will face charges at the Kota Kinabalu Special Corruption Sessions Court this Thursday. In Selangor, a company director was detained for allegedly submitting false documents involving travel claims and air conditioner purchases worth RM33,000. The female suspect, also in her 50s, was arrested at the Selangor MACC office while providing her statement. Investigations suggest the offences occurred between 2022 and 2023, with the suspect submitting claims for transactions that never took place. Selangor MACC deputy director Khairul Izwan Karim confirmed the arrest, adding the case is being investigated under Section 471 of the Penal Code. The suspect is expected to be charged at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court tomorrow. – Bernama

Uniformed officer remanded for alleged abetment in false credit card claims of RM55,000
SEREMBAN — The Negeri Sembilan branch of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has remanded a uniformed officer suspected of abetment in submitting false details for a company credit card payment claim for a hotel booking totalling RM55,000 for personal gain. The four-day remand order until Aug 15 was issued by Magistrate Saiful Sayoti after allowing the MACC's application at the Magistrate's Court today. According to sources, the suspect, a man in his 20s, was detained at about 4pm yesterday when he appeared to give a statement at the state MACC office. 'Initial investigations found that the suspect conspired with a clerk of a tourism company based in the capital who was previously remanded on July 16. Both suspects are believed to have committed the act from March 2023 to February 2024 by submitting company credit card payment claim documents containing false details of hotel bookings for supposedly official company business but actually for personal gain,' he said. Meanwhile, the state MACC director Awgkok Ahmad Taufik Putra Awg Ismail, when contacted, confirmed the arrest and said the case is being investigated under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009. — BERNAMA
