DES MOINES, Iowa — Several metro pools have announced they are postponing their usual Memorial Day weekend opening due to cooler-than-usual temperatures. However, some still plan to offer scheduled weekend activities.
Originally set to open this weekend, Adventureland announced that Adventure Bay wouldn't open due to 'unseasonable cooler temperatures' and would instead open on Friday, May 30th.
The City of Ames announced that the Furman Aquatic Center would also be delaying their opening. They are planning to open on Wednesday, May 28th.
What weather to expect for the Memorial Day weekend
The City of Ankeny says both Prairie Ridge and Cascade Falls are now on pause until temperatures warm up, saying temperatures need to reach 68 degrees and up to open doors. They are now planning on opening doors on Tuesday, May 27th.
The Clive Aquatic Center also stated that 'chilly forecasted temps' were delaying their original Memorial Day weekend opening. They now plan to open on Saturday, May 31st, with regular hours.
Holiday Aquatic Center and Valley View Aquatic Center in West Des Moines are also staying closed over the forecast chilly weekend. West Des Moines Parks and Recreation says they are now planning on opening doors on Saturday, May 31st. However, the American Legion Park Sprayground is still set to open as planned this weekend.
The Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department isn't deterred by the forecasted chilly temps. Saturday through Monday Teachout Aquatic Center plans to open for their first aquatic weekend. City of Des Moines says those waiting for warmer weather can still enjoy the May 31st through June 1st pre-season weekend.

Forecast: Smoke exits, storms move in

DES MOINES, Iowa — We didn't get as warm as we thought we would Sunday, as smoke aloft knocked a few degrees off our highs. Stronger south winds will kick in on Monday and push temps and dewpoints up, setting us up for Tuesday storms. The weather timeline steps you through the variables in three-hourly increments: Low's Sunday night will be warmer than the past few, helping set us up for a hotter Monday. As we move into the late afternoon, we'll see the smoke aloft exit east as the jet stream pattern changes. The Storm Prediction Center and Colorado State's severe weather algorithm have eastern Iowa pegged for stronger storms Tuesday. Wind and hail would be the main threats. It appears the best window for storm chances Tuesday in central Iowa will come between 3 a.m. and 7 p.m. Predicted rainfall amounts look pretty good! We have isolated shower chances both Thursday and Saturday in the forecast. Rain chances look to be a little higher next Saturday night and Sunday as things stand on June 1st. Highs for the next six days are in the slideshow above, and your WHO 13 7-day forecasts are below: It does appear that we'll enter a wetter pattern by mid-month, though we look to end June a bit above-average in terms of temperature. Regional Water lifts boil advisory for one city, others remain under restrictions

AVOCA, Iowa — Weeks after issuing the initial boil advisory, the Regional Water Rural Water District has announced the drinking water boil advisory is lifted for one southwest town, while the rest remain under restriction pending further testing. The initial advisory went into effect on May 14th and covered several cities throughout southwest Iowa. On June 1st, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources announced that the advisory was lifted for Avoca. The lift only applies to Avoca; the rest of the cities remain under advisory pending results from recent samples. Regional Waters says those samples are estimated to be completed on June 3rd. Two water samples must test negative for bacteria to lift a boil advisory. Regional Water says almost 80 sampling points have been required to be collected and tested due to the systemwide pressure loss. Last day of Des Moines Con kicks off at Iowa Events Center Regional Water's water tower system maintained pressure throughout the weekend and says that the community's water conservation practices have proven helpful in filling the towers. Regional Waters asks the community to continue their efforts to conserve water even as advisories and restrictions could lift in the coming weeks. They say due to drought conditions in southwest Iowa, water availability will remain a concern until a temporary booster station is in place. 'The completion of a temporary booster pump between the region and Council Bluffs was delayed last week due to wet weather. However, in the last few days the area was dry enough to continue pipeline construction and testing; barring any unforeseen circumstances, Regional Water hopes the connection between Council Bluffs and Regional Water's system will be completed around June 11,' the Iowa DNR said in release. Residents are reminded that if water use exceeds capacity and the towers lose pressure, a boil advisory will go into effect again. Regional Waters asks residents to continue limiting water use. Limit or avoid watering or irrigation of lawns. Limit or avoid washing vehicles, except at commercial establishments that provide that service as their only means of income. In these cases, hours of use will be restricted to 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. No water shall be used to fill private swimming pools, children's wading pools, or similar articles. No water shall be used to clean streets, driveways, sidewalks, etc. Large-volume water users, including industries, motels, hotels, eating establishments, and livestock confinements are requested to scale back services and/or production. Schools are strongly urged to cancel physical education activities and inter-scholastic competitions that require showers or attract crowds, and take other actions to reduce water consumption. For those still under a boil advisory, bottled water is still available at the Regional Waters Rural Water District Avoca Office. Regional Waters and the Iowa DNR say they are continuing efforts to ensure safe drinking water and thank customers for their patience. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Update on the Market street mural

SIOUX CITY, IA (KCAU) — The new mural that is being painted on the north side of the building at 712 market street off of west 7th has been making good progress. The project is a partnership between the Gilchrist foundation, which is funding the project, Nathan and Rachel Phillips, who own the building, and the city of Sioux City. The mural will focus on music and the importance on volunteering in the community, and has been commissioned by Des Moine artist, Jill Wells. Wells said painting a mural can be tricky, especially when dealing with the rain. 'Without door works you really are affected by the weather so you layer up you take maybe longer breaks but when the sun comes out you try to work as vigorously as possible so you can get progress done while the weather is nice ' said Wells Wells hopes to get this mural done with in the next two weeks weather permitting.
