Cabinet clears compensation for families along Parvathy Puthanar

Time of India07-05-2025
Thiruvananthapuram: In a significant step for the West Coast Canal development project ( Kovalam-Bekal waterway ), the state cabinet has approved the valuation of homes belonging to families living on govt land (puramboke) along the Kovalam–Akkulam stretch. The move ensures fair compensation for those who lack legal land ownership but have built homes over the years along the Parvathy Puthanar Canal .These families, often residing with limited resources and without title deeds, had raised concerns about compensation and relocation benefits. The cabinet's decision to recognise the value of their structures brings relief to many facing displacement due to the waterway project.Arun K Jacob, director of the inland navigation department, confirmed that valuation approval has been granted for 68 such homeowners. Each family will receive compensation for their building structures in addition to a fixed amount of Rs 11 lakh. "The proceedings are progressing swiftly. While land acquisition in the Kovalam–Akkulam stretch is still lagging, acquisition from Akkulam to Varkala is nearly complete. We hope to open the Akkulam–Chettuva (Thrissur) stretch by July," he said. The project has faced delays due to legal hurdles involving 474 families without proper land records. Despite earlier promises to complete compensation by March 31, only 289 families have received payments so far. The remaining acquisitions are now expected to be completed by Dec.The development involves widening the canal to 25 meters, with a five-meter service road on both sides for improved navigation and maintenance. The Coastal Shipping and Inland Navigation Department, along with Kerala Waterways and Infrastructure Limited (KWIL), is implementing the project under a special-purpose vehicle that includes Cochin International Airport Ltd and the state govt. The initiative aims to revitalise Parvathy Puthanar, improve inland water transport, and strengthen regional connectivity.

Rain damages roads posing logistics challenge to Palda industrialists

Indore: Recent rainfall has resulted in sludge and potholes on roads in one of the city's oldest industrial belts, Palda, leaving industrialists struggling with damaged roads and logistics challenges. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Palda, which is home to over 400 industries, is grappling with poor infrastructure, hindering the timely transportation of goods to industries, said industrialists. Local industrialists said that deteriorating road conditions have led to deep potholes and hazardous driving scenarios, causing delays in movement of raw material and finished products. Palda Industrial Association secretary Harish Nagar expressed frustration over the situation, saying, "Industries in Palda have significantly limited their transportation activities due to damaged roads, which are not being repaired since long. We contribute approximately Rs 5 crore annually in property tax to the civic authority, yet basic infrastructure improvement remains unmet." Industrialists added that poor condition of roads and drainage systems have been repeatedly brought to the attention of Indore Municipal Corporation and relevant departments, yet appropriate action has not been taken to address these critical infrastructure needs. Another industrialist Komal Agrawal, who operates a dal mill in Palda said, "Damaged roads are not only affecting operational efficiency but also jeopardises the safety and integrity of goods in transit. Workers too are feeling the impact, as many find it increasingly difficult to reach their workplaces." Industries claim the poor condition of roads is hampering day-to-day operations and attendance of employees.

Despite warnings by RPSC, attendance still low in exams

Ajmer: Despite making strict rules and issuing warnings to ensure that attendance in its recruitment exams is high, Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC) continues to face the problem of a large number of absentees. The secretary of RPSC released a notification on May 9 this year, stating that if a candidate remains absent in two or more recruitment exams, their one-time registration will be blocked. To reopen the registration, a penalty of Rs 750 would have to be paid. A penalty of Rs 1,500 would have to be paid by those who remain absent in four exams. The commission also warned e-mitras against filling applications on behalf of candidates. Efforts were also made to prevent ineligible candidates from filing applications. "The RPSC has to prepare exam halls for a large number of candidates, but when most of them remain absent, it is a waste of money and efforts," said an official of RPSC. However, attendance in recruitment exams conducted by RPSC has not increased as yet. Exams conducted in July and Aug saw low attendance. On Wednesday, the recruitment exam for analyst-cum-programmer and deputy director in department of DOIT &C, for which 7,367 candidates applied, saw only 3,170 in the morning session and 3,157 in the evening session, a 42.85% attendance. In the assistant fisheries development officer exam on July 29, the attendance was only 5.88%: of the 4,118 candidates who applied, only 242 appeared.
