Coimbatore District Police revamp highway patrol on NH 544 against highway robbers
The district police are setting up a checkpoint at Ettimadai as an additional security measure. A patrol vehicle will be operated exclusively between Ettimadai and Walayar inter-State border, besides covering the road from K.G. Chavadi to Velanthavalam, which is another inter-State check-post.
Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police K. Karthikeyan said works of a cargo container check-post at Ettimadai is under way. A sub-inspector will be in-charge of the patrols between Ettimadai - Walayar – Velanthavalam section.
The measure is expected to increase police presence between Ettimadai and Walayar on NH 544, where robbers struck at their targets in most cases. After committing the crime on this stretch, they take Velanthavalam road as an escape route. The new arrangement is aimed at curbing highway robberies in the future.
At present, two highway patrol vehicles are covering the 40-odd km stretch of NH 544 between Neelambur and Walayar. After the launch of the new check-post at Ettimadai, these vehicles will cover areas between Neelambur and Ettimadai.
Police officers said that most of the robberies reported on the highway targetted Kerala-based people, who carried cash or jewellery. The robbers, who had prior knowledge of the movement of the cash or gold, struck at them before the Kerala border by waylaying their vehicles. In several cases, the burglars had specific information about the cash or gold, through persons associated with the victims or from persons with whom they have business transactions, they said.
In the last incident, a goldsmith from Thrissur was robbed of ₹30 lakh by a Kerala-based gang near Ettimadai on July 12, when he was heading to his native in a motorcycle. The police arrested three persons involved in the robbery. In another case, a jeweller and his aide from Thrissur were carjacked and robbed of 1.25 kg of gold at K.G. Chavadi on the highway on June 14.

Microsoft server hack has hit about 100 victims, researcher says
Microsoft on Saturday issued an alert about "active attacks" on self-managed SharePoint servers, which are widely used by government agencies and businesses to share documents within organisations. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads A sweeping cyberespionage operation targeting Microsoft server software compromised about 100 different organizations as of the weekend, one of the researchers who helped uncover the campaign said on Saturday issued an alert about "active attacks" on self-managed SharePoint servers, which are widely used by government agencies and businesses to share documents within organisations. Dubbed a "zero day" because it leverages a previously undisclosed digital weaknesses, the hacks allow spies to penetrate vulnerable servers and potentially drop a back door to secure continuous access to victim Bernard, the chief hacker at Eye Security , a Netherlands-based cybersecurity firm whichdiscovered the hacking campaigntargeting one of its clients on Friday, said that an internet scan carried out with the ShadowServer Foundation had uncovered nearly 100 victims altogether - and that was before the technique behind the hack was widely known."It's unambiguous," Bernard said. "Who knows what other adversaries have done since to place other back doors."He declined to identify the affected organizations, saying that the relevant national authorities had been notified. The ShadowServer Foundation didn't immediately return a message seeking researcher said that, so far, the spying appeared to be the work of a single hacker or set of hackers."It's possible that this will quickly change," said Rafe Pilling, Director of Threat Intelligence at Sophos, a British cybersecurity said it had "provided security updates and encourages customers to install them," a company spokesperson said in an emailed statement. It was not clear who was behind the ongoing hack. The FBI said on Sunday it was aware of the attacks and was working closely with its federal and private-sector partners, but offered no other details. Britain's National Cyber Security Center said in a statement that it was aware of "a limited number" of targets in the United to data from Shodan, a search engine that helps to identify internet-linked equipment, over 8,000 servers online could theoretically have already been compromised by servers include major industrial firms, banks, auditors, healthcare companies, and several U.S. state-level and international government entities."The SharePoint incident appears to have created a broad level of compromise across a range of servers globally," said Daniel Card of British cybersecurity consultancy, PwnDefend."Taking an assumed breach approach is wise, and it's also important to understand that just applying the patch isn't all that is required here."

US Bank Employee Barred From Leaving China Over Alleged Criminal Probe
Beijing confirmed Monday that an employee of US bank Wells Fargo was barred from leaving China, following reports last week that Shanghai-born managing director Chenyue Mao was under an exit ban. After multiple media reports, Wells Fargo confirmed last week that it was providing assistance to the Atlanta-based Mao, who entered China in recent weeks but is now unable to leave. Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said on Monday that Mao was "involved in a criminal case currently being investigated by the Chinese authorities". "The Chinese law enforcement agencies have imposed exit restrictions in accordance with the law," Guo said. He did not give details of Mao's alleged offences, and Wells Fargo has not provided more information on her case. But the San Francisco-based bank is now restricting its employees from visiting China following this case, according to reports. It said in a statement to AFP on Friday that it was "closely tracking this situation and working through the appropriate channels so our employee can return to the United States as soon as possible". Wells Fargo declined to comment on China's foreign ministry saying that Mao was involved in a criminal case, when contacted by AFP. Guo said Mao "cannot leave the country while the case is ongoing, and has an obligation to cooperate with the work of investigators". He stressed that it was an "individual case" and that China would "continue as ever to welcome people from every country to travel and do business here". "No matter whether you are Chinese or not, you must follow Chinese laws while in China," he said. - Tensions and detentions - Industry groups say multinational firms have faced an increasingly difficult business environment in recent years, citing a lack of transparency on data laws and prolonged detentions of employees in the country. The trend has coincided with growing tensions between Beijing and certain Western nations, particularly the United States but also regional competitors. The Washington Post reported on Sunday, citing four unnamed sources, that an employee at the US Commerce Department was being prevented from leaving China after failing to declare on his visa application that he worked for the American government. The unnamed Chinese American man, who works for the Patent and Trademark Office, had travelled to China several months ago to visit family, the newspaper reported. Asked about the report on Monday, Guo said he was not familiar with the case. On Wednesday, a Chinese court sentenced a Japanese businessman from pharmaceutical company Astellas to three and a half years in prison for spying. Another pharma giant, UK-headquartered AstraZeneca, said in November that the head of its China operations, Leon Wang, had been detained, after reports that the firm was under investigation for potentially illegal data collection and drug imports. And in 2023, a senior executive at US risk advisory firm Kroll was prohibited from leaving China, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Bihar gangsters frequently visited Kolkata, built criminal networks
1 2 3 Kolkata: Bihar gangster Tausif Raza, alias Badsha, and his cousin, Nishu Khan, have been coming to Kolkata regularly since 2023, a probe by Bihar STF and Kolkata STF has found. Arrested for murdering another Bihar-based gangster, Chandan Mishra, at the Paras Hospital in Patna along with two others, the cousins stayed in Kolkata for over two weeks last year. "We have identified several locals with whom they were in touch, and we are questioning all of them. We will also be keeping a check on their activities from now on. These contacts do not stay at either New Town or Anandapur," said a source in Kolkata STF. "The cousins loved staying at hotels and partying in bars. It was during these bar visits that Nishu became acquainted with individuals involved in Kolkata's criminal underworld. After being shot in the spine during a gunfight with Bihar police, Nishu supplied weapons to criminals for some time. We suspect he might have supplied arms to some criminals in North 24 Parganas and Kolkata too during this time," claimed Bihar police sources. Meanwhile, the four accused, for whom Bihar police received a 48-hour transit remand, set out for Patna around 11 pm on Sunday, reaching Patna in less than 12 hours. Three vehicles took the accused back, the first one carrying the injured Nishu (recovering from an unrelated bullet injury) and the next one taking back the three other accused to Patna. According to information received by Bihar Police, it was mainly Nishu who built a strong network in areas like Topsia, Tiljala, and Park Circus. He recruited his own men there, who helped by providing various logistics after his operations in Bihar as instructed by Nishu. Nishu often returned to the city afterwards. The probe also revealed that it was Tausif who drove to Kolkata via Gaya. Cops found CCTV footage of the Bihar number plate SUV entering the city after losing its track from Ruby crossing. Some social media exchanges between Nishu and a woman revealed the gang members were looking for a house on rent in the Anandapur area. The CCTV of the area was tracked minutely, and the vehicle was tracked yet again, making it easier for investigators to carry out the arrests. According to police, Nishu's friend booked a room in her own name on the third floor of the Anandapur guest house through a local acquaintance. It was there that Kolkata Police's STF detectives apprehended Tausif, Nishu, and Harsh Kumar. The police said that Nishu's female friend was released as she was not involved in any crime. However, Bihar Police are also questioning several others besides the detainees, given at least four other shooters are still at large. They have been trying to find out why Nishu and Tausif came to Kolkata after the crime at the Patna hospital. They said that they might soon move court to question Sheru Singh, who is imprisoned in Purulia jail and widely claimed to have instructed Tausif to murder Chandan. It is reported that Sheru even provides them with monthly payments.
