Former captain O'Brien's new role with Exiles

Yahoo17-07-2025
Newport County have appointed former defender and ex-club captain Mark O'Brien as club ambassador.
The 32-year-old's role will see him working in the community, supporting matchday hosting duties at Rodney Parade and assisting the club's commercial department.
O'Brien made more than 120 appearances for the Exiles and in 2017 his late winner against Notts County saw Newport pull off an astonishing League Two relegation escape on the final day of the season.
He was forced to retire at the age of 27 in 2020 because of heart issues that required surgery and subsequently became the club's player liaison officer.
"This club means everything to me,'' said the Irishman, who has also worked as a Radio Wales summariser since he retired from playing.
"The club and the community stuck by me when I had my heart problem and this is my opportunity to give something back for that support.
"I'm really looking forward to developing the new role, my new life and new career.
"I've been helping the club on the field, and training ground, for nearly 10 years. Now I want to make a difference off the field as well."

Everton make Chelsea transfer offer as second Dibling bid rejected

Everton have reportedly submitted an offer to sign Chelsea flop Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, while Southampton have rejected their latest transfer bid for Tyler Dibling. The Blues are looking to offload the midfielder just one year after signing him from Leicester City for £30 million. Dewsbury-Hall was reunited with manager Enzo Maresca, who guided the Foxes to promotion in 2023/24, but the Italian coach only handed him two starts in the Premier League last season. The 26-year featured in all 15 matches of the club's successful UEFA Conference League campaign, while he also made five appearances in the FIFA Club World Cup, replacing captain Reece James in the 3-0 final win over PSG. Everton make Chelsea transfer offer as second Dibling bid rejected Dewsbury-Hall could be leaving Stamford Bridge already after Fabrizio Romano reported that Everton have submitted an 'official bid' to Chelsea for a permanent transfer. The two clubs are in ongoing talks to discuss the terms of a possible deal, with the Merseyside outfit 'confident' of reaching an agreement soon. Dewsbury-Hall has also been linked with a move to Fulham. The Englishman is not the only player the Toffees are targeting after David Moyes admitted they are behind in preparations for the new season due to a lack of new signings. Everton have made two offers to Southampton for winger Tyler Dibling. Sky Sports News report that the Saints have rejected the latest bid, which is said to be worth an initial £35m plus £8m in add-ons. The Athletic claim that the offer was 'in the region of £40m', but Southampton have yet to respond to it. Everton have also been linked with Leicester's Wilfred Ndidi, Malick Fofana of Lyon and Manchester City outcast Jack Grealish. Read – Speaking after Everton's 2-2 draw with Manchester United in the Premier League Summer Series, Moyes said that he felt new signings would be arriving soon. 'I think there will be deals next week, we're getting much closer,' he revealed. 'But I have to say, I felt that four or five weeks ago as well, but we're getting near the tickly bit soon and we've got to get some things done. 'We have to make several additions, we know that, even for the numbers. We have people in the squad where we'd maybe like to put them out on loan or do other things with them. 'A few will leave'

Norwich City boss Liam Manning is expecting players to leave the club before the transfer window closes at the start of next month. The Canaries have added 10 players to their first-team squad over the summer while selling last season's top scorer, Borja Sainz, to Porto. As they prepare for Saturday's opening Championship match of the season against Millwall (15:00 BST), Manning admits players will have to leave the club. "It's not always in our control but naturally we're a bit heavy," the head coach told BBC Radio Norfolk. "We've been able to do some real productive work with the help of the owners to bring in what we have - the consequence is we've got a few too many and I'm sure in the coming weeks there'll be a few who will leave." Norwich finished their pre-season programme with a 2-0 win over Dutch side NAC Breda on Saturday with the notable absences of experienced duo Shane Duffy and Anis Ben Slimane. Defender Duffy missed only one league game last season while midfielder Slimane made 25 starts in the Championship. "Everybody wants to play football and if that's not happening or not likely here, people want to pursue alternative options," Manning added. "Until anything definite happens we'll keep working with them, keep pushing them - their attitude has been top in training and we'll see how that plays out."
