CPS Security launches License Plate Recognition Camera in Southcrest to combat crime

The Citizen5 days ago
CPS Security has launched a license plate recognition (LPR) camera in Southcrest to strengthen crime prevention and increase vehicle tracking capabilities across Alberton.
The first LPR camera stands at a crucial point on Vootrekker Road, a route that enters the area from the Johannesburg CBD and which criminals often use.
This initiative, fully funded by CPS Security, links directly with the SAPS and alerts response units in real-time.
'We have had house robberies in the Southcrest area and, through many years of experience, we noticed that criminals regularly use Voortrekker Road to enter and exit,' said Tyron van der Merwe of CPS Security.
'We've always wanted to put cameras here, and this is just the start.'
How the system works
The LPR cameras scan every vehicle entering or leaving Southcrest and compare its number plates to a national database that the SAPS uses.
Vehicles flagged as involved in criminal activity trigger an instant alert to CPS tactical units.
'The alerts happen in milliseconds. Once a vehicle is detected, our tactical teams immediately respond and co-ordinate with law enforcement such as the SAPS, the EMPD and the JMPD,' explained van der Merwe.
Each alert contains detailed case information, including crime type, case number, dates and the name of the investigating officer, allowing teams to act fast and legally during stop-and-searches.
Constant monitoring and broader integration
The LPR system is monitored 24 hours a day through two advanced control room platforms. CPS works with the Vumacam and Mavic surveillance networks, which support crime-fighting efforts across Gauteng.
'We use two control rooms and partner networks to ensure we never miss an alert. This gives us an edge in staying one step ahead of criminals.'
CPS is part of the broader Vumacam project that operates in Glenvista, Mulbarton, Moffatview, Alberton, and Germiston. The Southcrest camera adds to this broader surveillance network.
Protecting privacy and upholding the law
CPS assured the public that the system complies with the Protection of Personal Information Act (Popia).
All footage and vehicle data remain confidential and are shared only with vetted partners under strict non-disclosure agreements.
'We do not share footage with the public. The information is used strictly for crime combating and is handled within legal boundaries,' said van der Merwe.
Positive community feedback
Local safety organisations and residents have received the Southcrest camera installation well.
Deidre de Carvalho, a representative of the Alberton CPF and community member, praised the move.
'What the CPS came up with is a brilliant idea. Now, when criminals enter Alberton, CPS and the police can be alert, which will reduce crime in the area,' she said.
Expansion plans and community involvement
Southcrest has one installed LPR camera, but CPS has identified other high-risk entry and exit points where they will place more cameras.
The system is active in Brackendowns and Randhart, with similar installations in progress.
CPS encourages residents and business owners to join the initiative and help sponsor camera poles in their areas.
'We are reaching out to business owners and residents to adopt poles or support installation costs. It is affordable and has been proven effective in multiple suburbs,' van der Merwe said.
CPS also offers complete area surveys to identify security needs and determine the best placement for LPR technology.
Mobile units and long-term vision
Where permanent infrastructure is not yet available, CPS use a mobile LPR trailer to deploy to hotspots. This trailer has the same recognition technology and has aided many criminal apprehensions.
'Whether a fixed pole or mobile trailer, the results are consistent. These systems are one of the best tools we have in the fight against crime,' said van der Merwe.
The long-term goal is to secure every major entry and exit point in Alberton, Johannesburg south and Germiston.
'We took the initiative upon ourselves to invest in this project because we care about the safety of our suburbs.
This is only the beginning, and we will continue to innovate.'
Support from law enforcement
CPS Security appreciated the continued support of law enforcement partners, like the SAPS, the EMPD, the JMPD and Gauteng Traffic.
'They have stood by us when it mattered most. Their presence during stops and investigations ensures we follow the law and keep communities safe,' said Van der Merwe.
Colonel Letloenyane, the station commander at the Alberton SAPS, also welcomed the initiative and applauded CPS Security's proactive steps.
'We appreciate all the efforts our stakeholders are putting into place to ensure Alberton is a safe place to live. It will come in handy because it is a known fact that most criminals use that route to come to Alberton and terrorise our community.'

Sensational bombshells dropped about police corruption, Senzo Meyiwa's murder and Kelly Khumalo's involvement

Ex policeman and advocate Malesela Teffo is trending because of sensational claims he made on Mac G's podcast yesterday about police corruption and how Senzo Meyiwa's girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo, killed him. X users reacted: @DiphiriBen10 Adv Teffo alleges that the head of the correctional facility called him into his office during his imprisonment and offered him R 45million to drop the Senzo Meyiwa case and concentrate on his career. @Am_Blujay 11 people involved in the Senzo Meyiwa case are dead so far according to Adv Teffo. @SimthembileMab3 According to Adv Teffo, it was not an intruder during a robbery, but rather an accidentally shot by Kelly Khumalo that killed Senzo Meyiwa, a claim that contradicts the official version of events. He says about 11 people have died because of the Meyiwa case and he is now in the line of danger. 'I won't die. If they want me dead, they must ask God first.' He broke down in tears, saying his father died while he was arrested for this case. He further claims that the five accused are being used as scapegoats, suggesting that the State is trying to hide the truth about Meyiwa's murder. He also says former Minister Bheki Cele was the part of drug cartel in Johannesburg 🔥 yooh the man is dropping bombs. @officialtwinny Adv Teffo is not lying, ask yourself why SAPS never destroys drugs like they do with alcohol? Criminals are having a hard time. Thanks to General Mkwanazi and Adv Teffo for exposing them. @ThisIsColbert Adv Teffo: 'I am NOT accusing Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela (Gauteng police commissioner) of being a drug supplier, I KNOW he's doing that.' @Nqobs04 Adv Teffo needs to be protected. He will not rest until there's justice in that Senzo Meyiwa case. @_AfricanSoil Adv Teffo is fighting; what's going on? He is talking about dockets moving around, wrong people writing letters; NPA not following the law and correct processes He's dropping people's names of lawyers and prosecutors. @Solopearl Adv Malesela Teffo tried to expose SAPS corruption, but his unorthodox approach made us doubt him. Until recent revelations proved him right to a certain extent. His dramatic arrest on live TV was meant to silence him. @ZaBornfree General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has balls, he is a Provincial commissioner but tackling National Drug Syndicate Teffo just implicte Commissioner Mawele, Bheki Cele and Kelly Khumalo. @ZikhaliBandile We should vividly appreciate whoever is exposing the Dark Secrets of the SAPS. Adv Teffo, Gen. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and Arthur Fraser. It is clear now that some SAPS Top officials are the biggest security threat to our sovereignty and freedom. An ACT is highly needed. @AngeloPhungula Adv Teffo on Podcast And Chill saying he's gonna fill up the gaps left by General Mkhwanazi @SirDavid_Dashe Adv Tefo has suffered. I no longer trust the judiciary, SAPS, and the media. The media made him look like a crazy psychopath and we fell for it. DAILY NEWS

IFP reaffirms GNU role, slams NPA and urges reforms within justice system

The IFP reaffirmed its commitment to the GNU while demanding action on political killings and faster prosecutions. Inkatha Freedom Party president Velenkosini Hlabisa is seen at the IFP's Health and Welfare Summit, 14 July 2023, in Fourways. Picture: Michel Bega/ The Citizen The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has reiterated its commitment to remaining a 'vocal participant' in the government of national unity (GNU) as it took aim at the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). IFP leader Velenkosini Hlabisa said the party remains a vocal participant within the GNU, holding the government to its promise of transparency and swift justice. The party president said this during an IFP media briefing on Monday afternoon. The party reflected on matters pertaining to South Africa's governance, the GNU and the government of provincial unity (GPU). IFP reaffirmed its GNU role 'The IFP is in the GNU or GPU in order to govern or be part of governance. But this does not dilute the image of the IFP,' Hlabisa said. Hlabisa reiterated the IFP's commitment to the GNU and GPUs, saying that they embody a vision of healing the wounds of the past while working towards a brighter and inclusive South Africa. ALSO READ: Steenhuisen has made a bad situation worse with tactical blunders 'After one year of participating in the GNU, the Gauteng GPU and leading the KwaZulu-Natal GPU, we believe our impact can be felt at every level, but particularly on crime reduction and economic development,' the leader said. Speaking of crime, the party addressed allegations of political interference made by KwaZulu-Natal's police commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. The IFP said President Cyril Ramaphosa's decision to place Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on special leave and to establish a judicial commission of inquiry aligns with the party's recommendation to the president. Party calls for full-scale investigation Hlabisa said this demonstrates the party's influence in the GNU, adding that problems within the South African Police Service (Saps) lie at the core of political violence and the failure to resolve political murder cases. The IFP also called for a full-scale investigation into political interference and disruptions that have hindered the progress of political killing investigations. ALSO READ: National dialogue is being used as the beating stick for ANC, DA 'The allegations by Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi have entrenched a trust deficit between the Saps and the country, which must be reversed through due process and through investigation,' Hlabisa said. The party believes that a Saps-led investigation is not an option under the circumstances, given the focus on the Saps in investigations. The IFP also took aim at the NPA, saying it needs to do more and better, refocusing itself on speedy prosecutions, especially on the findings of the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into state capture. NPA needs to do 'more and better' IFP President Velenkosini Hlabisa says: "The work of the NPA so far does not inspire any confidence, and it is a bleeding ground for public mistrust. Restoring public trust in our security and legal system remains our priority." — SABC News (@SABCNews) July 21, 2025 'The work of the NPA, so far, does not inspire any confidence, and it is a bleeding wound. It is a bleeding ground for public mistrust,' Hlabisa said. The party leader added that restoring public trust in the security and legal systems remains the IFP's priority when it comes to the question of the National Dialogue. ALSO READ: National Dialogue: Ramaphosa slams DA 'hypocrisy', says party will miss out on 'biggest show in SA' He recalled the vision of IPF founder Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, who emphasised the importance of a National Dialogue on issues like land reform, traditional leadership, poverty and social cohesion. Hlabisa said the party believes that South Africa's future depends on an open, inclusive and honest dialogue amongst its citizens. IFP supports National Dialogue As a result, the IPF supports the upcoming National Dialogue, recognising that genuine nationhood can only be achieved when leaders listen to the cries of the people and work together. 'South Africa needs more than just hope. We need a united effort to rebuild and transform our nation,' Hlabisa said. 'This requires a sense of genuine urgency, decisive reform and active participation for all sectors of our society. The current moment demands that we go beyond mere talk.'
