Oman's waste recycling sector expands to 83 firms
Taking part in a panel discussion on Day 1 of the Advantage Oman Forum, he said the proliferation of commercially-driven recycling activities is a testament to the enactment of effective policies and regulations that have fostered the growth of this sector.
'Four years ago, new policies were introduced to encourage internal recycling within the Sultanate. Some facilities were also made available to investors. In the past four years, we have seen the successful establishment of 83 recycling plants, focusing on various materials including iron scrap, aluminum scrap, plastic, car parts, cardboard, paper, tyres, and others,' Dr Al Amri stated.
Fuelled by the growth of this sector, around 43 per cent of municipal solid waste is now being recycled, according to the official. 'So we are on the right track! We expect to reach 60 per cent by 2030 and more than 90 per cent by 2040.'
Sharing his thoughts on the growth of the country's circular economy, fellow panelist Eng Salim bin Nasser al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, said the Oil & Gas sector is also getting its act together and dealing with oilfield waste in an environmentally responsible manner. Scrap steel and waste oil, for example, are now being recycled and processed in a sustainably approved way.
'With support from the Environment Authority and the Ministry of Commerce, we are now collecting all of that waste for reprocessing within the country, thereby supporting not only environmentally friendly processes, but also creating opportunities for new industry, new jobs, and so on,' he said.
From the standpoint of decarbonisation, the Oil & Gas industry is also actively working to start collecting carbon emissions, notably from hard-to-abate industries, for sequestering in suitable locations. So CO2 capture and CO2 sequestration are now part of the circular economy,' Al Aufi added.

Port of Salalah reports strong growth in first half of 2025
MUSCAT, AUG 16 Port of Salalah, Oman's largest container terminal and a leading transshipment hub on the Arabian Sea, has delivered one of its strongest operational and financial performances for the six months ended on June 30, 2025. The Container Terminal (CT) handled 2.03 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), up 21% from 1.68 million TEUs during the corresponding period last year. This growth was attributed to an increase in vessel calls following the successful completion of the terminal's upgrade, as well as the full phasing-in of all Gemini proforma services by Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd. The General Cargo Terminal (GCT) handled 12.91 million metric tonnes during the same period, compared with 11.66 million metric tonnes a year earlier – a growth of 11%. This increase was largely driven by higher exports of dry bulk cargo. Braik bin Musallam al Amri, Chairman of the Board of Directors, credited the improved container throughput to the recently completed terminal upgrade. 'Following the successful completion of our container terminal upgrade project, we are pleased to report a steady recovery in transshipment volumes,' Al Amri said. 'The infrastructure enhancements have significantly increased our handling capacity from 4.5 million TEUs to 6 million TEUs, representing a 1.5 million TEU capacity expansion. The Gemini network has played a pivotal role in supporting this positive trajectory, further solidifying Port of Salalah's position as a premier regional transshipment hub.' Al Amri also noted that general cargo volumes continue to post sustained growth, particularly in dry bulk exports. 'This positive trajectory necessitates focused investment in equipment upgrades and infrastructure enhancements to maintain service quality and support future expansion. Notably, gypsum exports have shown consistent growth, reinforcing Port of Salalah's strategic position as the region's premier gypsum export hub. This specialisation complements our diversified cargo portfolio while driving operational synergies across terminal assets.' On the financial front, Port of Salalah reported consolidated revenue from operations of RO 42.42 million, up from RO 35.04 million last year. Consolidated EBITDA surged to RO 12.78 million from RO 7.13 million, while consolidated net profit rose to RO 2.48 million, compared with RO 1.57 million in H1 2024. According to the Chairman, Port of Salalah is evolving into an integrated trade and logistics facilitator, actively enabling investment opportunities and addressing sector-specific challenges. This expanded role, he stressed, strengthens the port's position as a regional economic catalyst while creating new value streams.

4th meeting of India-Singapore Joint Working Group discussed bilateral trade, investment ties
New Delhi: The 4th meeting of the India-Singapore joint working group on Trade & Investment (JWGTI) took place at Vanijya Bhawan in New Delhi on Thursday, bringing the two nations together to strengthen economic cooperation and chart future areas of partnership. The meeting was held a day after the 3rd India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable, underscoring a week of intensive bilateral engagement. According to a Ministry of Commerce & Industry press release, the discussions centred on expanding trade and investment links, identifying priority sectors for alignment, improving logistics and supply chain efficiency, simplifying regulations, and enhancing cross-border trade facilitation. During the meeting, both sides reviewed progress in existing collaborations, including work in the semiconductor sector and the digitalisation of trade processes. They also explored new opportunities in skills development, capacity building, and other emerging industries. The talks were co-chaired by Rajesh Agrawal, Special Secretary, Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and Beh Swan Gin, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Trade and Industry, Singapore. Agrawal noted that the India-Singapore relationship has moved beyond traditional trade frameworks, with ample opportunities for further cooperation still ahead. This year marks significant milestones: the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries and the 20th anniversary of the comprehensive economic cooperation agreement (CECA). Signed in 2005, CECA was India's first comprehensive trade agreement with any country and Singapore's first such pact with a South Asian nation. Singapore remains a key economic partner for India. It is India's largest trading partner within ASEAN, with bilateral trade touching USD 34.26 billion in 2024-25. The island nation is also India's second-largest source of Foreign Direct Investment, contributing USD 163.85 billion (about Rs. 11,24,509.65 crore) in equity inflows between April 2000 and July 2024, accounting for roughly 24 per cent of cumulative FDI inflows. The gathering reaffirmed the shared intent to strengthen economic ties, while setting the stage for further technical discussions and follow-up actions in the coming months.

Muscat: The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP) is working on the execution of the Industrial Strategy 2040 and expects to increase the contribution of the industrial sector to over OMR11.6 billion by 2040. Also, the strategy is working to attract industrial investments of OMR40 billion with focus on the green industries and advanced technologies. The MoCIIP said that the manufacturing sector in the Sultanate of Oman is one of the key pillars of economic diversification efforts, as it reduces reliability on oil revenues and boosts the in-country value (ICV), besides increasing employment opportunities. The Ministry said that economic indicators show a strong performance as the manufacturing sector grew by 7.45% in 2024 to over OMR3.6 billion (at fixed prices), representing a 9.4% share of contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP). The manufacturing sector continued with its positive performance to register additional growth of 5.4% in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. Regarding the foreign trade, the Ministry said that exports of non-oil goods of Oman grew by 7.2% between January and May 2025, compared to the same period in 2024, to reach OMR2.7 billion. Growing competitiveness The UAE, KSA and India, topped the list of countries importing Omani products, which shows the growing competitiveness of the national industries in the regional and international markets. The number of Omani nationals working in the industrial sector reached over 57,000 in 2024. Khalid bin Saleem Al Qasabi, Director General of industry at MoCIIP, said that the advance performance of the sector reflects the success of the industrial policies, mainly through the programmes and initiatives the ministry has launched to support industrialists and localisation of the supply chains and development of the incentives system. He said that the Ministry continues with the implementation of a package of strategic projects associated with the Industrial Strategy 2040, in addition to the plan of increasing local content in the industrial sector. He further said that the first half of 2025 saw the launch of the advanced automation centre for boosting the transformation towards the Fourth Industrial Revolution and delivery of 262 initiatives to 14 partners within the implementation plan of the Industrial Strategy 2040 among other achievements. - ONA
